Business And Global Governance: The Growing Role Of Corporate Codes Of Conduct, Ann Florini Mar 2003

Business And Global Governance: The Growing Role Of Corporate Codes Of Conduct, Ann Florini

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

These are, in many ways, halcyon days for global business. In a vast ideological shift in the late 20th century, markets rather than governments came to be seen as the road to prosperity. Governments that once nationalized foreign firms now seek out the investment, technology, and managerial expertise such companies can bring. The halls of the United Nations used to ring with calls for international regulation of those dreaded evil-doers, the multinational corporations. Now the UN instead implores business to join with it in a voluntary Global Compact to ensure respect for internationally agreed environmental, labor, and human rights standards.

Applicant Perceptions Of Selection Procedures: The Role Of Selection Information, Belief In Tests, And Comparative Anxiety, Filip Lievens, Wilfried De Corte, Katrien Brysse

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study addresses the effects of the provision of information on the reliability and validity of selection procedures and the effects of test-taker attitudes (i.e., belief in tests and comparative anxiety) on fairness perceptions. Prior to an actual selection process, applicants (N = 118) were given either information about the reliability and validity of various selection procedures or no information. Next, they evaluated the fairness of eight selection procedures. No significant effect of selection information was found. Belief in tests had significant effects, with applicants high on test belief giving higher fairness ratings than applicants low on test belief. In …

The Relation Of Instrumental And Symbolic Attributes To A Company's Attractiveness As An Employer, Filip Lievens, Scott Highhouse Mar 2003

The Relation Of Instrumental And Symbolic Attributes To A Company's Attractiveness As An Employer, Filip Lievens, Scott Highhouse

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study adds a new marketing-based angle to the study of the attractiveness of organizations in the early stages of the recruitment process. Drawing on the instrumental-symbolic framework from the marketing literature, we expected that the meanings (in terms of inferred traits) that prospective applicants associate with employing organizations would play an important role in applicants' attractiveness to these organizations. Two groups of prospective applicants (275 final-year students and 124 bank employees) were drawn from the applicant population targeted by the bank industry. These applicants were asked to rate a randomly assigned bank in terms of job/organizational factors and to …

Stimulating Firm-Specific Investment Through Risk Management, Heli Wang, Jay B. Barney, Jeffrey J. Reuer Feb 2003

Stimulating Firm-Specific Investment Through Risk Management, Heli Wang, Jay B. Barney, Jeffrey J. Reuer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This article suggests a rationale for firm risk management that has been largely ignored in financial economics literature. It presents an argument for harnessing the influence of a company’s stakeholders who, whether as employees, suppliers or customers, make a valuable investment specific to the company. Such investments are crucial for a firm’s competitive advantage, yet because they are firm-specific and therefore cannot be transformed or transferred, stakeholders are often concerned about the risks involved in making them. A company’s efforts to manage risk can therefore persuade stakeholders to make even greater firm-specific investments, bringing benefits to shareholders and stakeholders alike.

China's Software Industry And Its Implications For India, Feichin, Ted Tschang Feb 2003

China's Software Industry And Its Implications For India, Feichin, Ted Tschang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The Chinese software industry is small and underdeveloped, compared with its computer and other information technology (IT) hardware industry and compared with India’s software industry. Yet, current status is not necessarily a good guide to future prospects, as China’s recent history amply demonstrates. An important difference between the Chinese and Indian software sectors is the former’s close links to domestic users, notably industrial and commercial users. This has fostered intensive learning in the area of product development for a large and rapidly growing domestic market. India’s software sector, lacking such a dynamic domestic user sector until very recently, has thrived …

The Effect Of Taxes On The Pricing Of Defaultable Debt, Kian Guan Lim, Fenghua Song, Mitchell Craig Warachka Jan 2003

The Effect Of Taxes On The Pricing Of Defaultable Debt, Kian Guan Lim, Fenghua Song, Mitchell Craig Warachka

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Empirical studies have documented the dependence of corporate credit spreads on default risk, equity premiums, and taxes. However, taxes have previously not been incorporated into reduced-form credit risk models. Therefore, we first extend the existing literature by considering a default intensity that depends on taxes as well as the default-free short rate and a market index. Consequently, we establish a theoretical basis to explain previous empirical findings regarding the significant impact of taxation on defaultable bond prices. Unlike previous models, tax implications for defaultable debt cannot be constructed from a sum of tax effects on zero coupon bonds. Our empirical …

The Integrated Networks Model: Explaining Resource Allocations In Networked Markets, Judy K. Frels, Tasadduq Shervani, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava Jan 2003

The Integrated Networks Model: Explaining Resource Allocations In Networked Markets, Judy K. Frels, Tasadduq Shervani, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The last decade has witnessed a shift from a focus on the value created by a single firm and product to an examination of the value created by networks of firms (or product ecosystems) in which assets are comingled with external entities. The authors examine these market-based assets in the context of network markets and propose an Integrated Networks model in which three types of networks—user, complements, and producer—add value or enhance the attractiveness of the associated focal product. The authors empirically test the proposed model by surveying information technology professionals on their resource allocation decisions regarding the Unix and …

Trading Agents Competing: Performance, Progress And Market Effectiveness, Michael P. Wellman, Shih-Fen Cheng, Daniel M. Reeves, Kevin M. Lochner Jan 2003

Trading Agents Competing: Performance, Progress And Market Effectiveness, Michael P. Wellman, Shih-Fen Cheng, Daniel M. Reeves, Kevin M. Lochner

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The annual trading agent competition offers agent designers a forum for evaluating programmed trading techniques in a challenging market scenario. TAC aims to spur research by enabling researchers to compare techniques on a common problem and build on each other's ideas. A fixed set of assumptions and environment settings facilitates communication of methods and results. As a multiyear event, TAC lets researchers observe trading agents' progress over time, in effect accelerating the evolution of an adapted population of traders. Given all the participant effort invested, it is incumbent on us to learn as much from the experience as possible. After …
