To date, Singapore’s regionalization strategy has been applied in China, India, Indonesia and Vietnam through the establishment of industrial parks. The nexus between these ‘clones’ is the implantation of Singapore’s positive business ethos amidst more uncertain host environments. Leveraging on world-class infrastructure, efficiency and location-specific advantages, these industrial parks present themselves as low-cost investment enclaves. This paper focuses on the regional industrial development project assembled, administered and promoted by the sovereign national governments of Singapore and Vietnam. Using in-depth case studies, it examines the push-pull factors for firms with different structures. It finds that progress in this privileged foreign investment …
Production And Political Economy In The Animation Industry: Why Insourcing And Outsourcing Occur, Feichin, Ted Tschang, Andrea Goldstein
Production And Political Economy In The Animation Industry: Why Insourcing And Outsourcing Occur, Feichin, Ted Tschang, Andrea Goldstein
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This paper presents a framework for explaining production patterns in creative industries. In particular, we focus on the conditions under which insourcing occurs in the US threedimensional animation industry and where outsourcing in the conventional two-dimensional animation industry occurs to the Philippines. The work that is outsourced is not the most creative component of the entire production process. Institutional decisions (as related to the location of decision makers and primary markets), and business conditions in the world market, have both positively and negatively affected the local Filipino industry and its position within the global division of labor. Implications for knowledge-based …

Integrating Product Platform Development With Supply Chain Configuration In A Global Environment, Soumen Ghosh, Nagesh Murthy, Byung Joon Park
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
In this research, we have investigated the interaction between product platform development and supply chain configuration in a global environment. A comprehensive decision support model has been developed to simultaneously determine product strategy and supply chain configuration. By Products we refer to the bundle of module option alternatives offered to market segments, and product platform development is a means of looking for the opportunity of sharing module option alternatives among products. A scenario analysis has been performed to gain insights on how platform development is influenced by market conditions and current supply chain configuration. The analysis shows that different supply …
Stripping To The Undercoat: A Review And Reflections On A Piece Of Organization Theatre, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Iain Mangham
Stripping To The Undercoat: A Review And Reflections On A Piece Of Organization Theatre, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Iain Mangham
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
In this article, we review one 'tailor-made play', one piece of organization theatre called Varnishing the Truth. We then reflect on the questions we asked of ourselves while watching this performance and reviewing the video of it: how does this activity relate to its claimed theoretical foundations (Boal's forum theatre)? Is forum theatre an appropriate model for organization theatre? Can 'things be made to move' by an activity such as the one to which we were an audience? In the process of answering these questions, we emphasize the reductive adoption of radical techniques (that is, Boal's forum theatre); the depoliticization …
The Effect Of Competitive Advertising Interference On Sales For Packaged Goods, Andre Bonfrer, Peter J. Danaher, Sanjay K. Dhar
The Effect Of Competitive Advertising Interference On Sales For Packaged Goods, Andre Bonfrer, Peter J. Danaher, Sanjay K. Dhar
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Competitive advertising interference arises when viewers of advertising for a focal brand are also exposed to advertising messages for competing brands within a short time period, say one week for TV advertising. Although competitive advertising interference has been shown to reduce ad recall and recognition and brand evaluation measures, no studies have examined the impact on sales. In this research we use a market response model of sales for two grocery categories in the Chicago area to investigate possible advertising interference effects. The results show that competitive interference effects are strong. When one or more competing brands advertise in the …

This issue represents a moment of transition in the history of the Journal of Management Studies. After being involved with the Journal in a number of capacities for over 25 years, Karen Legge is retiring as a General Editor. We mark this event by publishing a collection of critical essays stimulated by her work as an influential writer and researcher in management studies. Whether as colleague, teacher or editor she has continually struck a balance between developmental mentoring, critical insight, sage service, and a sense of humour and enjoyment for each task she undertakes. Karen embodies many of those qualities …
International Cross-Listing And The Bonding Hypothesis, Dan Segal, Michael King
International Cross-Listing And The Bonding Hypothesis, Dan Segal, Michael King
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
The authors describe a new view of cross-listing that links the impact on firm valuation to the firm's ability to develop an active secondary market for its shares in the U.S. markets. Contrary to previous research, cross-listing may not provide benefits for all firms, even when those firms meet the highest regulatory requirements for disclosure and supervision. When cross-listed firms are divided into two groups on the basis of their share turnover in the home market relative to the U.S. market, the firms that develop active trading in the U.S. market experience an increase in valuation. Cross-listed firms that remain …

Infrastructure can be unreliable and administration subject to corruption in Asia’s rapidly emerging economies. This context presented Singapore with unique opportunities to export its ‘positive reputation’ to locations where these attributes are less certain. The strategic initiative is premised on the perception that Singapore’s good relations with multinationals, as well as ‘guanxi’, or connections, with Asian business networks, will give the industrial-township projects a marketing advantage. To complement the extensive literature on Singapore’s flagship projects in Indonesia and China, this paper takes a closer look at Singapore’s lesser-known project in Vietnam. Evidence from on-site surveys is presented. It finds that …

Performance Planning, Quality-Of-Service, And Pricing Under Competition, Corinne Touati, Parijat Dube, Laura Wynter
Performance Planning, Quality-Of-Service, And Pricing Under Competition, Corinne Touati, Parijat Dube, Laura Wynter
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this work we model the relationship between the capacity and the Quality of Service (QoS) offered by the firm in a competitive scenario of two firm’s working to maximize their profits. Using simple queueing theoretic models we study the sensitivity of a firm’s market share to price, capacity and market size. Our preliminary studies yield important properties of the equilibrium solution which may further provide important “engineering” guidelines for performance planning and pricing strategies.
Multi-Period Multi-Dimensional Knapsack Problem And Its Application To Available-To-Promise, Hoong Chuin Lau, M. K. Lim
Multi-Period Multi-Dimensional Knapsack Problem And Its Application To Available-To-Promise, Hoong Chuin Lau, M. K. Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper is motivated by a recent trend in logistics scheduling, called Available-to-Promise. We model this problem as the multi-period multi-dimensional knapsack problem. We provide some properties for a special case of a single-dimensional problem. Based on insights obtained from these properties, we propose a two-phase heuristics for solving the multi-dimensional problem. We also propose a novel time-based ant colony optimization algorithm. The quality of the solutions generated is verified through experiments, where we demonstrate that the computational time is superior compared with integer programming to achieve solutions that are within a small percentage of the upper bounds.
The Effects Of Customer Personality Traits On The Display Of Positive Emotions, Hwee Hoon Tan, Maw Der Foo, Min Hui Kwek
The Effects Of Customer Personality Traits On The Display Of Positive Emotions, Hwee Hoon Tan, Maw Der Foo, Min Hui Kwek
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Evidence is presented that customers shape their own service experiences through their traits and through the display of positive emotions by service providers. It is proposed that customer personality traits play a role in service experience, since customer scan affect service delivery process and outcomes. It is theorized that both the service provider and the customer affect each service interaction. It is asserted that brief encounters can affect outcomes meaningful to service organizations. The relationship for both customer traits that promote the display of positive emotions and those that inhibit these displays are explored. The trait of agreeableness in customers …
Stereotype Reactance At The Bargaining Table: The Effect Of Stereotype Activation And Power On Claiming And Creating Value, Laura J. Kray, Jochen Reb, Adam D. Galinsky, Leigh Thompson
Stereotype Reactance At The Bargaining Table: The Effect Of Stereotype Activation And Power On Claiming And Creating Value, Laura J. Kray, Jochen Reb, Adam D. Galinsky, Leigh Thompson
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Two experiments explored the hypothesis that the impact of activating gender stereotypes on negotiated agreements in mixed-gender negotiations depends on the manner in which the stereo-type is activated (explicitly vs. implicitly) and the content of the stereotype (linking negotiation performance to stereotypically male vs. stereotypically female traits). Specifically, two experiments investigated the generality and limits of stereotype reactance. The results of Experiment 1 suggest that negotiated outcomes become more one-sided in favor of the high power negotiator when masculine traits are explicitly linked to negotiator effectiveness. In contrast, the results of Experiment 2 suggest that negotiated outcomes are more integrative …
Social Trust And Economic Governance, Fali Huang
Social Trust And Economic Governance, Fali Huang
Research Collection School Of Economics
The paper investigates the dynamic relationship between social trust and economic governance using a principal-agent model with stochastic returns. To mitigate the inherent moral hazard problem both intrinsic and extrinsic incentives are useful. The cooperative tendency of an agent measures his intrinsic discipline against shirking, the distribution of which characterizes social trust in society. The economic governance methods include direct monitoring and efficiency wage. The main results are the following. An agent with a higher cooperative tendency needs less monitoring and a lower wage to make effort, which brings higher profit for the principal. But competition among principals for more …
Revised Estimates Of Dimension And Exercise Variance Components In Assessment Center Postexercise Dimension Ratings, Charles E. Lance, Tracy A. Lambert, Amanda G. Gewin, Filip Lievens, James M. Conway
Revised Estimates Of Dimension And Exercise Variance Components In Assessment Center Postexercise Dimension Ratings, Charles E. Lance, Tracy A. Lambert, Amanda G. Gewin, Filip Lievens, James M. Conway
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The authors reanalyzed assessment center (AC) multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) matrices containing correlations among postexercise dimension ratings (PEDRs) reported by F. Lievens and J. M. Conway (2001). Unlike F. Lievens and J. M. Conway, who used a correlated dimension-correlated uniqueness model, we used a different set of confirmatory-factor-analysis-based models (1-dimension-correlated Exercise and 1-dimension-correlated uniqueness models) to estimate dimension and exercise variance components in AC PEDRs. Results of reanalyses suggest that, consistent with previous narrative reviews, exercise variance components dominate over dimension variance components after all. Implications for AC construct validity and possible redirections of research on the validity of ACs are discussed.
A Cost-Effective Critical Path Approach For Service Priority Optimization In The Grid Computing Economy, Mei Lin, Zhangxi Lin
A Cost-Effective Critical Path Approach For Service Priority Optimization In The Grid Computing Economy, Mei Lin, Zhangxi Lin
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The advancement in the utilization and technologiesof the Internet has led to the rapid growth of gridcomputing; and the perpetuating demand for gridcomputing resources calls for an incentive-compatible solution to the imminent QoS problem. This paper examines the optimal service priority selection problem that a grid computing network user will confront. We model grid services for a multi-subtask request as a prioritized PERT graph and prove that the localized conditional critical path, which is based on the cost-minimizin gpriority selection for each node, sets the lower bound for the length of cost-effective critical path that commits the optimal solution. We …

Organic Production Systems: What The Biological Cell Can Teach Us About Manufacturing, Lieven Demeester, Knut Eichler, Christoph H. Loch
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Biological cells run complicated and sophisticated production systems. The study of the cell's production technology provides us with insights that are potentially useful in industrial manufacturing. When comparing cell metabolism with manufacturing techniques in industry, we find some striking commonalities, but also some important differences. Like today's well-run factories, the cell operates a very lean production system, assures quality at the source, and uses component commonality to simplify production. While we can certainly learn from how the cell accomplishes these parallels, it is even more interesting to look at how the cell operates differently. In biological cells, all products and …
Strategy Viewed From A Management Fashion Perspective, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark
Strategy Viewed From A Management Fashion Perspective, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This article argues for the greater inclusion of external agents within strategy research. Drawing on the emergent management fashion literature, it conceives of these as a group of actors operating within a management fashion‐setting arena. The outputs of this community dominate conceptions of what are deemed legitimate strategic actions. They thus have a critical, if presently neglected, impact on the nature strategy. The roles of the members of the management fashion‐setting community are described and three promising areas of research outlined.
The Evolution Of Research On Information Systems: A Fiftieth Year Survey Of The Literature In Management Science, Rajiv D. Banker, Robert J. Kauffman
The Evolution Of Research On Information Systems: A Fiftieth Year Survey Of The Literature In Management Science, Rajiv D. Banker, Robert J. Kauffman
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The development of the information systems (IS) literature in Management Science during the past 50 years reflects the inception, growth, and maturation of several different research streams. The five research streams we identify incorporate different definitions of the managerial problems that relate to IS, the alternate theoretical perspectives and different methodological paradigms to study them, and the levels of the organization at which their primary results impact managerial practice. The decision support and design science research stream studies the application of computers in decision support, control, and managerial decision making. The value of information research stream reflects relationships established based …
The Fashion Of Management Fashion: A Surge Too Far?, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark
The Fashion Of Management Fashion: A Surge Too Far?, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
In recent years there has been growing interest in the notion that management ideas and techniques are subject to swings in fashion in the same way that aesthetic aspects of life such as clothing styles, hair length, music tastes, furniture design, paint colours, and so forth are characterized by surges of popularity and then decline. Adopting a predominantly neo-institutional perspective, researchers have conceived of management fashions as techniques that fail to become firmly entrenched and institutionalized since organizations are attracted to them for a period and then abandon them in favour of apparently newer and more promising ones. Drawing on …
Effects Of Board Structure On Firm Performance: A Comparison Of Japan And Australia, Ingrid Bonn, Toru Yoshikawa, Phillip H. Phan
Effects Of Board Structure On Firm Performance: A Comparison Of Japan And Australia, Ingrid Bonn, Toru Yoshikawa, Phillip H. Phan
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This article compares the effects of board size, proportion of female directors, proportion of outside directors and average age of directors on firm performance in Japanese and Australian firms. We found that board size and age of directors were negatively associated with the performance of Japanese firms. For Australian firms, outsider ratio and female director ratio were positively associated with performance.
Transaction-Data Analysis Of Marked Durations And Their Implications For Market Microstructure, Anthony S. Tay, Christopher Ting, Yiu Kuen Tse, Mitchell Warachka
Transaction-Data Analysis Of Marked Durations And Their Implications For Market Microstructure, Anthony S. Tay, Christopher Ting, Yiu Kuen Tse, Mitchell Warachka
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We propose an Autoregressive Conditional Marked Duration (ACMD) model for the analysis of irregularly spaced transaction data. Based on the Autoregressive Conditional Duration (ACD) model, the ACMD model assigns marks to characterize events such as tick movements and trade directions (buy/sell). Applying the ACMD model to tick movements, we study the influence of trade frequency, direction and size on price dynamics, volatility and the permanent and transitory price impacts of trade. We also apply the ACMD model to analyze trade-direction data and estimate the probability of informed trading (PIN). We find that trade frequency has a critical role in price …
Entry Mode And Performance In A Transitional Economy: A Framework For Foreign-Invested Enterprises In China, Howard Davies, Jin K. Han, Namwoon Kim, Jae H. Pae
Entry Mode And Performance In A Transitional Economy: A Framework For Foreign-Invested Enterprises In China, Howard Davies, Jin K. Han, Namwoon Kim, Jae H. Pae
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
A conceptual framework is developed, bringing together entry mode, the influence of state officials, and the adoption of a customer-driven orientation in order to explain the performance of foreign-invested firms in a transitional economy. The model is tested on a sample of firms in China across eight provinces and cities, spread across the relatively developed South Coast, the Central Belt formed by Shanghai and the Yangzi basin and the less-developed North and West. We find that the decision to enter through a joint venture reduces the customer focus of the enterprise. Contrary to expectation, however, we find no positive relationship …
Equity Style Returns And Institutional Investor Flows, Kenneth A. Froot, Melvyn Teo
Equity Style Returns And Institutional Investor Flows, Kenneth A. Froot, Melvyn Teo
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This paper explores institutional investor trades in stocks grouped by style and the relationship of these trades with equity market returns. It aggregates transactions drawn from a large universe of approximately $6 trillion of institutional funds. To analyze style behavior, we assign equities to deciles in each of five style dimensions: size, value/growth, cyclical/defensive, sector, and country. We find, first, strong evidence that investors organize and trade stocks across style-driven lines. This appears true for groupings both strongly and weakly related to fundamentals (e.g., industry orcountry groupings versus size or value/growth deciles). Second, the positive linkage between flows and returns …
"I Think They Discriminated Against Me": Using Prototype Theory And Organizational Justice Theory For Understanding Perceived Discrimination In Selection And Promotion Situations, Michael M. Harris, Filip Lievens, Greet Van Hoye
"I Think They Discriminated Against Me": Using Prototype Theory And Organizational Justice Theory For Understanding Perceived Discrimination In Selection And Promotion Situations, Michael M. Harris, Filip Lievens, Greet Van Hoye
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Research in industrial/organizational (I/O) psychology has generally focused on objective measures of employment discrimination and has virtually neglected individuals' subjective perceptions as to whether a selection or promotion process is discriminatory or not. This paper presents two theoretical models as organizing frameworks to explain candidates' likelihood of perceiving that discrimination has occurred in a certain selection or Promotion situation. The prototype model stresses the importance of the prototypical victim-perpetrator combination, the perceived intention of the decision-maker, and the perceived harm caused as possible antecedents of perceived employment discrimination. In the organizational justice model, procedural, informational, interpersonal, and distributive fairness play …
Solving Hierarchical Constraints Over Finite Domains With Local Search, Martin Henz, Roland H.C. Yap, Yun Fong Lim, Seet Chong Lua, J. Paul Walser, Xiao Ping Shi
Solving Hierarchical Constraints Over Finite Domains With Local Search, Martin Henz, Roland H.C. Yap, Yun Fong Lim, Seet Chong Lua, J. Paul Walser, Xiao Ping Shi
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Many real world problems have requirements and constraints which conflict with each other. One approach for dealing with such over-constrained problems is with constraint hierarchies. In the constraint hierarchy framework, constraints are classified into ranks, and appropriate solutions are selected using a comparator which takes into account the constraints and their ranks. In this paper, we present a local search solution to solving hierarchical constraint problems over finite domains (HCPs). This is an extension of local search for over-constrained integer programs WSAT(OIP) to constraint hierarchies and general finite domain constraints. The motivation for this work arose from solving large airport gate …
An Empirical Investigation Of Interviewer-Related Factors That Discourage The Use Of High Structure Interviews, Filip Lievens, Anneleen De Paepe
An Empirical Investigation Of Interviewer-Related Factors That Discourage The Use Of High Structure Interviews, Filip Lievens, Anneleen De Paepe
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
High structure interviews appear to be less frequently used in personnel management practice than might be expected given their good reliability and validity. Although several authors have speculated on the factors of resistance to high structure interviews, empirical research is very scarce. Two studies are conducted among experienced human resources representatives who frequently conduct employment interviews. The first study provides a fine-grained description of the degree of structure used in interviews, showing that in most interviews constraints are placed only on the topical areas to be covered and that scoring is done only on multiple criteria. The second study tests …
Management Fashion As Image-Spectacle: The Production Of Best-Selling Management Books, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, David Greatbatch
Management Fashion As Image-Spectacle: The Production Of Best-Selling Management Books, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, David Greatbatch
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Drawing on the work of Guy Debord's Society of the Spectacle and Daniel Boorstin's The Image, this article argues that aesthetic and management fashions are not separate forms, as both represent the preeminence of the image spectacle. Central to this is the increasing emergence of pseudoevents and synthetic products. Using empirical findings from a study of the production of six best-selling management books, it shows that they are manufactured coproductions that result from an intricate editorial process in which the original ideas are moulded in order for them to have a positive impact on the intended audience. Central to this …
