Advertising Collusion In Retail Markets, Kyle Bagwell, Gea M. Lee
Advertising Collusion In Retail Markets, Kyle Bagwell, Gea M. Lee
Research Collection School Of Economics
We analyze non-price advertising by retail firms, when the firms are privately informed about their respective costs of production. In a static advertising game, an advertising equilibrium exists in which lower-cost firms select higher advertising levels. In this equilibrium, informed consumers rationally employ an advertising search rule in which they buy from the highest- advertising firm, since lower-cost firms also select lower prices. In a repeated advertising game, colluding firms face a tradeoff: the use of advertising can promote productive efficiency but only if sufficient current or future advertising expenses are incurred. At one extreme, if firms pool at zero …

Self-Organizing Logistics Systems, John J. Bartholdi, Iii, Donald D. Eisenstein, Yun Fong Lim
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
When a logistics system is “self-organizing” it can function without significant intervention by managers, engineers, or software control. The social insects, such as ants or bees, provide models of self-organizing logistics systems that may be profitably emulated. We illustrate some of these ideas for the problem of balancing assembly lines.

Do You Trust To Get Trust? A Study Of Trust Reciprocity Behaviors And Reciprocal Trust Prediction, Viet-An Nguyen, Ee Peng Lim, Hwee Hoon Tan, Jing Jiang, Aixin Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Trust reciprocity, a special form of link reciprocity, exists in many networks of trust among users. In this paper, we seek to determine the extent to which reciprocity exists in a trust network and develop quantitative models for measuring reciprocity and reciprocity related behaviors. We identify several reciprocity behaviors and their respective measures. These behavior measures can be employed for predicting if a trustee will return trust to her trustor given that the latter initiates a trust link earlier. We develop for this reciprocal trust prediction task a number of ranking method and classification methods, and evaluated them on an …

To facilitate product selection and purchase decisions on e-commerce Web sites, the presentation of product information is very important. In this research, the authors study how disposition styles influence users’ search patterns in product comparison services of e-commerce Web sites. The results show that people use relatively more feature paths and less product paths in vertical disposition style than horizontal disposition style. The findings also indicate that there are relatively more feature paths and less product paths in the first half than second half of the information search paths. This is consistent with Gensch’s two-stage choice model which suggests that …

Why do correlations all go to one when economic conditions turn bad? We review the latest research on funding liquidity (the ease with which hedge funds obtain capital) and discuss its implications on the asset liquidity and valuations of securities held by funds, on subsequent fund performance, and on contagion across hedge fund investment styles.

What Do Egyptian Tomb Raiders And Martial-Arts-Loving Entrepreneurs Have In Common?, Knowledge@Smu

Some ancient Egyptians make stuffed animals to accompany their dead in their after-life, others raid the tombs for these animals to sell for a profit. For Chatri Trisiripisal, a 38-year-old self made millionaire, besides making his money running hedge funds and property investments, he also does so holding martial arts classes. According to Trisiripisal, chasing such entrepreneurial dreams requires one to be “crazy” sometimes. What are the other attributes that a bidding entrepreneur should have?

A successful leader is not one who wins the most votes, but rather, someone who lives by a “winning mindset”. A leader who instils this “winning mindset” within his or her organisation can make all the difference between running a profitable business or a floundering one. In a recent talk at Singapore Management University, Pradeed Pant, President of Kraft Foods Asia Pacific, distils his take on the “winning mindset”, following more than three decades of experiences in the FMCG arena.

Bridging Service Gaps: Is The Road To Service Excellence Paved With Disasters?, Knowledge@Smu

It sometimes seems as if companies are not willing to take feedback seriously – not unless complaints escalate into a public relations disaster, with letters reproduced in the press and comments circulating amongst blogs, tweets and other digital platforms. By then, the organisation's reputation, along with its share price, would be at stake. But does it have to come to that? Why do organisations only seem to care when they are put on an uncomfortable public spot. More importantly, are they simply putting up a front? Great service, according to service expert Robert Johnson, starts with humility.

Drucker’S Centennial: Celebrating His Legacy And Dissecting His Relevance, Knowledge@Smu

Peter Drucker passed away in 2005. So far, despite the proliferation of management consultancy and education, there has yet been a bigger name than his. This is not surprising, for Drucker is the man who created this field. Today, the term which Drucker coined, the “knowledge worker”, remains more relevant than before. Robert Swaim, Drucker’s disciple and colleague, distils the guru’s key thoughts and ideas, identifies certain gaps into the book, The Strategic Drucker: Growth strategies and marketing insights from the works of Peter Drucker.

Beyond Watches And Reishi: Jannie Tay’S Approach To Business, Knowledge@Smu
Knowledge@SMU
Having built The Hour Glass into one of the largest luxury watch retailers in this region, Jannie Tay has in recent years turned her attention into another pursuit: oxygen regeneration and reishi-based wellness products. For Tay, successful businesses need to move beyond a bottom line focus. She believes that when too much attention is placed on profits, greed triumphs over passion, integrity, and care for the well-being of people and external environment.

Tired of reading conventional theories to what caused the recent financial crisis? How about a theory that places the blame on China, for a change? Giles Chance, author of “China and the Credit Crisis”, dances between the fine lines as he gives a fresh spin on the crisis, blind Western policymakers, a global currency and the world order that is to come as the "China effect" dominates familiar Western models of capitalism, politics and diplomacy.

Switching It Outsourcing Suppliers: Enhancing Transition Readiness, Siew Kien Sia, Wee-Kiat Lim, Kanapaty Pelly Periasamy

As IT outsourcing continues to gather momentum and mature, the decision to change suppliers at the end of a contract, or even earlier, has become an inevitable reality for many. This article sheds light on the management challenges associated with transitioning from one outsourcing supplier to another. Based on the “painful” experience of a large public-sector organization that chose not to renew its contract with a supplier that had operated its online portal and call center for five years, we provide insights into what makes a client organization “transition-ready.” We then describe the actions an organization can take before, during, …
Family Control And Ownership Monitoring In Family-Controlled Firms In Japan, Toru Yoshikawa, Abdul A. Rasheed
Family Control And Ownership Monitoring In Family-Controlled Firms In Japan, Toru Yoshikawa, Abdul A. Rasheed
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This paper focuses on a type of firms that have been traditionally neglected in both family business and governance research, namely, family-controlled, publicly-listed firms. Although principal-agent conflicts may be less prevalent in such firms, family control can potentially give rise to principal-principal conflicts, leading to expropriation of the wealth of minority owners by family owners. Superior firm performance and the willingness to distribute the profits through dividend payments would suggest the absence of such expropriation. Based on a sample of 210 OTC firms in Japan, we examined the relationships between family control and dividend payouts and profitability. Our results indicate …
Contingency Theory Of Strategic Conflict Management: Unearthing Factors That Influence Ethical Elocution In Crisis Communication, Augustine Pang, Yan Jin, Glen T. Cameron
Contingency Theory Of Strategic Conflict Management: Unearthing Factors That Influence Ethical Elocution In Crisis Communication, Augustine Pang, Yan Jin, Glen T. Cameron
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Despite the advances made offering a viable perspective in strategic conflict management, the contingency theory has not addressed a prevailing question: How can the theory inform organizations to communicate ethically with its publics, especially during crisis? The only guidance the theory offers is through its proscriptive variables, which prohibit either communication or more accommodative communication. However, given the exigency and dynamism of many situations along the life cycle of an issue, non-communicating may not be an alternative offered to organizations. This study aims to unearth a new set of factors called ethical variables that influence the organization’s stance by reviewing …
Affordable Homeownership Policy: Implications For Housing Markets, Sock Yong Phang
Affordable Homeownership Policy: Implications For Housing Markets, Sock Yong Phang
Research Collection School Of Economics
Affordable homeownership is a policy that is often accorded a great deal of policy attention by governments of many countries. This paper aims to examine the market implications of setting a housing price to income ratio target for a market segment by the government. The policy requires active intervention by the government with regard to the targeted sector. The paper uses a simple model of the housing market with a homeownership affordability target to derive the market implications of such targets. In the presence of uncertainty and resource constraints, the objective of homeownership affordability is achieved for the targeted group …

The Way We Think: Ethics, Health And The Environment In International Business, David Nathan Smith
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
Breaches of ethics and social responsibility in domestic and international business are typically thought to be anchored in such phenomena as greed, dishonesty and conflict of interest. While these forces are frequently at work in international business transactions, there is often another major force at work when failures of ethics and social responsibility occur. This article addresses the question of what is it about the way that transnational company managers and government officials think or don’t think that leads to breaches of ethics and social responsibility – breaches that often result in major health, environmental and social tragedies. The article …

The Pricing Of Conservative Accounting And The Measurement Of Conservatism At The Firm-Year Level, Dan Segal, Jeffrey L. Callen, Ole-Kristian Hope
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
This paper analyzes the relation between equity prices and conditional conservatism and introduces a new measure of conservatism at the firm-year level. We show that the asymmetric properties of conservative accounting, the existence of non-accounting sources of information, and the properties of GAAP related to special items combine to generate a nonlinear relation between unexpected equity returns and earnings news (the shock to expected current and future earnings). Based on this model, we construct a conservatism ratio (CR) defined as the ratio of the current earnings shock to earnings news. CR measures the proportion of the total shock to expected …

Local Coordination Under Bounded Rationality: Coase Meets Simon, Finds Hayek, C. Jason Woodard
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper explores strategic behavior in a network of firms using an agent-based model. The model exhibits a tension between economic efficiency and the stability of the network in the face of incentives to change its configuration. This tension is to be expected because the conditions of the Coase theorem are violated: the boundedly rational firms in the model lack the ability to discover efficient network configurations or achieve them through collective action. In computational experiments, as predicted by theory, firms frequently became locked into inefficient outcomes or endless cycles of mutual frustration. However, simple institutional innovations such as property …
Differentiating Knowledge Processes In Organisational Learning: A Case Of “Two Solitudes”, Siu Loon Hoe, Steven Mcshane
Differentiating Knowledge Processes In Organisational Learning: A Case Of “Two Solitudes”, Siu Loon Hoe, Steven Mcshane
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The fields of organizational behavior (OB)/strategy and marketing have taken different paths over the past two decades to understanding organizational learning. OB/strategy has been pre-occupied with theory development and case study illustrations, whereas marketing has taken a highly quantitative path. Although relying on essentially the same foundation theory, the two disciplines have had minimal crossfertilization. Furthermore, both fields tend to blur or usually ignore the distinction between structural and informal knowledge processes. The purpose of the paper is to highlight the distinction between informal and structural knowledge acquisition and dissemination processes and propose new definitions to differentiate them. Future research …

Climate Risk Management: The Case Of Forecasting Tropical Cyclones, Carolyn W Chang, Sk Jack Chang, Kian Guan Lim
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Global warming has induced an increasing number of deadly tropical cyclones with a continuing trend. Developing high-functional climate risk management tools in forecasting, catastrophe modeling, pricing and hedging is thus crucial. By using transactional price changes of traded hurricane derivatives as the predictor in a doubly-binomial pricing framework, we develop a dynamic market-consensus hurricane forecasting model. Our model can forecast when and how a hurricane will make landfall, and how these forecasts will update themselves upon trading arrival.

Searching For Competitive Advantage In The Black Box, Eric Flamholtz, Wei Hua
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This paper deals with the sources of potential competitive advantage. It builds upon previous work by Flamholtz (1995) to develop a model of the determinants of organizational success and failure as well as subsequent empirical studies of the link between the model and financial performance (Flamholtz and Aksehirli, 2000, Flamholtz and Hua, 2002. The paper discusses the extension of the model from a framework for organizational development to a framework or ‘lens’ for building competitive advantage. It also hypothesizes that an organization’s infrastructure (defined in terms of four of the model’s variables) are likely to be the …

Debt And Study, Fred Moten, Stefano Harney

They say we have too much debt. We need better credit, more credit, less spending. They offer us credit repair, credit counseling, microcredit, personal financial planning. They promise to match credit and debt again, debt and credit. But our debts stay bad. We keep buying another song, another round. It is not credit that we seek, nor even debt, but bad debt -- which is to say real debt, the debt that cannot be repaid, the debt at a distance, the debt without creditor, the black debt, the queer debt, the criminal debt. Excessive debt, incalculable debt, debt for no …

Corporate Governance, Investor Protection, And Auditor Choice In Emerging Markets, Mahmud Hossain, Chee Yeow Lim, Patricia Mui Siang Tan
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
In this study, we examine the effect of firm-level governance on the firm's choice of an external auditor. Further, we test how the relation between corporate governance and auditor choice may be affected by the strength of legal environment. The results show that firm-level governance scores are positively related to the firm's auditor choice. This association is strengthened by country-level legal protection. Specifically, the positive association between auditor choice and the firm-level governance scores is weaker (stronger) in a low (high) legal environment. These findings are robust after controlling for determinants that were found to be significant in earlier research. …
Overinvestment And The Operating Performance Of Seo Firms, Fangjian Fu
Overinvestment And The Operating Performance Of Seo Firms, Fangjian Fu
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Prior studies have documented that firms' operating performance deteriorates following seasoned equity offerings (SEOs). This paper proposes and empirically tests the hypothesis that the poor performance is caused by managers' overinvestment. I show that, subsequent to the offering, SEO firms tend to invest more heavily than non-issuing control firms that are in the same industry and have enough financial slack and similar amounts of investment opportunities. More importantly, I find a negative relation between post-issue investment and operating performance, controlling for investment opportunities and pre-issue performance. The evidence supports an overinvestment interpretation as it stands in contrast to the prediction …

Instead of assuming the distribution of return series, Engle and Manganelli (2004) propose a new Value-at-Risk (VaR) modeling approach, Conditional Autoregressive Value-at-Risk (CAViaR), to directly compute the quantile of an individual asset's returns which performs better in many cases than those that invert a return distribution. In this paper we explore more flexible CAViaR models that allow VaR prediction to depend upon a richer information set involving returns on an index. Specifically, we formulate a time-varying CAViaR model whose parameters vary according to the evolution of the index. The empirical evidence reported in this paper suggests that our time-varying CAViaR …

With The Financial Crisis Over, Banks Are Hiring Again – But With A Different Job Description, Knowledge@Smu

The massive blood-letting that was supposed to happen with the recent financial crisis went by, without much of hoopla – at least in this part of the world – and many financial institutions are hiring again. However, with new market reforms, human resource managers are mulling over job descriptions. The mindset to maximise profits may be important, but according to the experts, professionals in the industry will be expected to bring more onto the table – to be accountable to a wider circle of stakeholders and to demonstrate a different set of values.

Many people believe that creativity is important to their line of work – from salespeople to accountants, lawyers to administrators – but few people seem to believe that they have what it takes to be creative. Even fewer people think that their employers are helping them to be creative. What lies behind the mystical creativity holy grail that makes it so elusive yet incredibly seductive? Creativity expert Fredrik Härén provides some insights into how we think about creativity and what makes companies like Google, Apple and Pixar tick.

Greying populations are no longer a challenge reserved just for developed economies. The “silver tsunami” is starting to make its way towards developing nations too. But are governments, insurance companies, banks and individuals preparing themselves sufficiently? Buying annuities is one means to which people can plan for their retirement needs. Yet, take-up rates remain low. As the "tsunami" approaches, should regulators take forceful action to kick start the take-up of such instruments to prepare their economies for the impending economic mayhem?
