Information Risk And Underwriter Switching In Seos: Evidence From China, Wei Luo, Pingui Rao, Heng Yue
Information Risk And Underwriter Switching In Seos: Evidence From China, Wei Luo, Pingui Rao, Heng Yue
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
In this paper we examine whether information risk affects underwriter switching in a seasoned equity offering (SEO) process. Building on previous research, we hypothesize that SEO firms and underwriters associate with one another by mutual choice, and firms with a low degree of information risk tend to match up with prestigious underwriters. Using a sample of SEO firms in China and employing accruals quality as a proxy of information risk, we find evidence consistent with our hypothesis: the information risk and the initial public offering (IPO) underwriters’ reputation at the time of the SEO jointly determine the probability that the …

The Interaction Of Roles, Resources, And Organizational Structures In Creative Work, Feichin, Ted Tschang
The Interaction Of Roles, Resources, And Organizational Structures In Creative Work, Feichin, Ted Tschang
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Creativity is known to be located at both the individual and group levels. We look at the case of videogame development, as an instance of project level creativity. We focus in particular on the design of the artifact. By examining the loci of creativity at the individual and group levels, we shed light on the roles and tasks of the designer, and on the organizational group structure known as the design cabal. In comparing the two extremes, we discover that the lack of organizational resources (namely, well known designers) leads in certain projects to the adoption of cabals or cabal-like …
A Hybrid Method To Detect Deflation Fraud In Cost-Per-Action Online Advertising, Xuhua Ding
A Hybrid Method To Detect Deflation Fraud In Cost-Per-Action Online Advertising, Xuhua Ding
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Web advertisers prefer the cost-per-action (CPA) advertisement model whereby an advertiser pays a web publisher according to the actual amount of transactions, rather than the volume of advertisement clicks. The main obstacle for a wide deployment of this model is the deflation fraud. Namely, a dishonest advertiser under-reports the transaction count in order to discharge less. In this paper, we present a mechanism to detect such a fraud using a hybrid of cryptography and probability tools. With the assistance from a small number of users, the publisher can detect deflation fraud with a success probability growing exponentially with the fraud …
Income, Endogenous Market Structure And Innovation, Mei Lin, Shaojin Li, Andrew B. Whinston
Income, Endogenous Market Structure And Innovation, Mei Lin, Shaojin Li, Andrew B. Whinston
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We investigate the effect of income distribution on R&D in a dynamic framework. Our model captures both the infinite R&D race among heterogeneous innovators and a market where successful innovators generate revenues. The market structure of successful innovations is endogenous – firms produce vertically differentiated substitute goods and compete in price. Based on firms' equilibrium market revenues, we derive numerical solutions of the Markov perfect equilibrium innovation rate of the dynamic problem. A key insight in our results is that explicitly modeling price competition and the market structure plays an important role in evaluating the impact of rising income inequality …
Designing The Dynamics Of Service Innovations, Arcot Desai Narasimhalu
Designing The Dynamics Of Service Innovations, Arcot Desai Narasimhalu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
There is no serious tool available to design service innovations even as it is gaining in important attention from the academic and industrial worlds. This paper presents a method that is specifically developed to help service innovators plan and design their innovations. The method recognizes the dependencies that exist across a service provider, customers and suppliers and help identify potential inconsistencies in the design of service innovations.
Growth And Survival Of International Joint Ventures: An External-Internal Legitimacy Perspective, Jane W. Lu, Dean Xu
Growth And Survival Of International Joint Ventures: An External-Internal Legitimacy Perspective, Jane W. Lu, Dean Xu
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The authors examine the growth and survival of international joint ventures (IJVs) from a legitimacy perspective. In a sample of 291 Sino-Japanese joint ventures in China, they found that Chinese parent age, Chinese parent size, and IJV industry relatedness to either parent had a positive effect on IJV growth and/or survival. However, IJV industry relatedness to both parents led to lower rates of IJV growth and survival. The findings highlight the importance for IJVs to obtain both external and internal legitimacy, as well as the difficulties IJVs face in acquiring internal legitimacy from both parents simultaneously.

Financial Sector Liberalization And Its Challenges To The Local Banks: The Experience Of Singapore, Swee Liang Tan, Gilbert Yip Wei Tan
Financial Sector Liberalization And Its Challenges To The Local Banks: The Experience Of Singapore, Swee Liang Tan, Gilbert Yip Wei Tan
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The main theme of the paper is about the challenges that financial sector liberalization poses to local banks. It reviews the experience of Singapore. We begin by explaining the unique circumstances surrounding Singapore. A small city-state controlled by a single party with about 65% majority in Parliament, Singapore has a paternalistic government that can be protective of industries that are strategic to the development of the country. Yet its government is also pragmatic, forward looking and pro-reformists. Because of its unique circumstances, the Singapore experience with liberalization is worth studying. Three key ideas will emerge in the paper. First, the …

Pricing Options In An Extended Black Scholes Economy With Illiquidity: Theory And Empirical Evidence, Umut Cetin, Robert Jarrow, Mitchell Protter, Mitchell Warachka
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This article studies the pricing of options in an extended Black Scholes economy in which the underlying asset is not perfectly liquid. The resulting liquidity risk is modeled as a stochastic supply curve, with the transaction price being a function of the trade size. Consistent with the market microstructure literature, the supply curve is upward sloping with purchases executed at higher prices and sales at lower prices. Optimal discrete time hedging strategies are then derived. Empirical evidence reveals a significant liquidity cost intrinsic to every option. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]

Do Shareholders Or Stakeholders Appropriate The Rents From Corporate Diversification? The Influence Of Ownership Structure, Parthiban David, Jonathan P. O'Brien, Toru Yoshikawa, Andrew Delios

Prior work on the performance consequences of corporate diversification has treated all powerful owners as seeking the same benefits from diversification (i.e, higher profit rather than growth) and therefore limiting value appropriation by other stakeholders such as employees and managers. In contrast, we distinguish between domestic "relational" owners and foreign "transactional" owners in Japanese corporations. Although transactional owners do indeed prioritize profitability when diversifying, relational owners primarily seek growth rather than profits from diversification. Furthermore, relational owners also allow managers and employees to appropriate more of the rents arising from diversification than do transactional owners.
Spirituality At Work And Organizational Citizenship Behavior: A Replication Study In Taiwan, Gilbert Tan, Christine Kuo, Eugene Zhen Yao Geh
Spirituality At Work And Organizational Citizenship Behavior: A Replication Study In Taiwan, Gilbert Tan, Christine Kuo, Eugene Zhen Yao Geh
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Interest in Management, Spirituality and Religion (MSR) research has surged over the last decade. However, most of the studies are done in the Western context. Tan and Geh’s (2009) is an exception. In Tan and Geh’s study, they provided a theoretical model linking spirituality at work with organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) through organizational commitment as the mediator and tested it empirically. The findings of the study, though exploratory, were interesting. They affirmed the effectiveness of affective commitment as a mediator between spirituality at work and OCB. Normative commitment, however, was not as effective. Their findings also show that continuance commitment …
An Analysis Of Extreme Price Shocks And Illiquidity Among Systematic Trend Followers, Bernard Lee, Shih-Fen Cheng, Annie Koh
An Analysis Of Extreme Price Shocks And Illiquidity Among Systematic Trend Followers, Bernard Lee, Shih-Fen Cheng, Annie Koh
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We construct an agent-based model to study the interplay between extreme price shocks and illiquidity in the presence of systematic traders known as trend followers. The agent-based approach is particularly attractive in modeling commodity markets because the approach allows for the explicit modeling of production, capacities, and storage constraints. Our study begins by using the price stream from a market simulation involving human participants and studies the behavior of various trend-following strategies, assuming initially that their participation will not impact the market. We notice an incremental deterioration in strategy performance as and when strategies deviate further and further from the …

Entrepreneurial Experiments In Science Policy: Analyzing The Human Genome Project, Kenneth G. Huang, Fiona E. Murray
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We re-conceptualize the role of science policy makers, envisioning and illustrating their move from being simple investors in scientific projects to entrepreneurs who create the conditions for entrepreneurial experiments and initiate them. We argue that reframing science policy around the notion of conducting entrepreneurial experiments – experiments that increase the diversity of technical, organizational and institutional arrangements in which scientific research is conducted – can provide policy makers with a wider repertoire of effective interventions. To illustrate the power of this approach, we analyze the Human Genome Project (HGP) as a set of successful, entrepreneurial experiments in organizational and institutional …

Audit Fees: To Disclose Or Not To Disclose?, Teng Aun Khoo, Soo Chiat Hwang
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
The authors argue that the disclosure of audit fees can provide a more level playing field in Singapore, and would also be consistent with the other major capital markets in the world. Auditors' independence is the cornerstone of the auditing profession, because without auditor's independence investors would not be able to rely on the so-called "audited" financial statements. Currently in Singapore, audit-fee disclosure is not mandatory except for banks as stipulated by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).
Pro-Creativity Leadership: An Exploratory Study On The Mediating Role Of Intrinsic Motivation, Gilbert Tan, Wei Nurn Chong
Pro-Creativity Leadership: An Exploratory Study On The Mediating Role Of Intrinsic Motivation, Gilbert Tan, Wei Nurn Chong
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Many scholars believe in the critical role leaders play in fostering creativity at the workplace (e.g. Amabile, 1998; Amabile, Conti, Coon, Lazenby, & Herron, 1996; Jung, 2000-2001; Mumford & Gustafson, 1988). Leaders have been described to occupy a boundary role position in organizations (Katz & Kahn, 1978) where they are tasked with influencing subordinate behavior in order to attain organizational goals (Fleishman, 1973; Mumford, 1986). As such, they are in the position to influence subordinate behavior considerably, including subordinates’ creative behavior. Yet to date, not much research has been done on the effect of leadership on employee creativity (Jung, 2000-2001; …

Mutual Fund Flows, Performance Persistence, And Board Quality, Sandy Lai, Ashish Tiwari, Zhe (Joe) Zhang
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This paper provides evidence on the impact of fund board quality on (a) the fund flow-performance relation, (b) persistence in fund performance, and (c) a fund’s potential change of strategy following a period of underperformance. We use Morningstar’s board quality ratings as a proxy for the quality of the fund’s board and document three main results. One, we show that funds that rank in the bottom quintile of rankings based on past performance, experience significantly lower flows at the margin when their board quality rating is poor compared to when the board quality is rated as good. Two, we document …
Optimal And Heuristics Policies For A Multiechelon Inventory Problem With Secondary Market Sales, Alexandar Angelus
Optimal And Heuristics Policies For A Multiechelon Inventory Problem With Secondary Market Sales, Alexandar Angelus
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Most research on supply chain management deals with settings where firms do not voluntarily get rid of inventory in the system. Since voluntary inventory reductions are often observed in practice, in this paper, we propose a (multi-echelon) model where the firm can dispose of excess stock through sales in the secondary market at each stage in the supply chain. What are called nested echelon base stock policies are shown to be optimal. Secondary market sales complicate the structure of the system, so that the classical Clark and Scarf (1960) approach no longer applies. Nevertheless, we identify features of the optimal …
The Roles That Forecast Surprise And Forecast Error Play In Determining Management Forecast Precision, Jong-Hag Choi, Linda A. Myers, Yoonseok Zang, David A. Ziebart
The Roles That Forecast Surprise And Forecast Error Play In Determining Management Forecast Precision, Jong-Hag Choi, Linda A. Myers, Yoonseok Zang, David A. Ziebart
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
Studying the determinants of management forecast precision is important because a better understanding of the factors affecting management’s choice of forecast precision can provide investors and other users with cues about the characteristics of the information contained in the forecasts. In addition, as regulators assess the regulation of voluntary management disclosures, they need to better understand how managers choose among forecast precision disclosure alternatives. Using 16,872 management earnings forecasts collected from 1995 through 2004, we provide strong evidence that forecast precision is negatively associated with the magnitude of the forecast surprise and that this negative association is stronger when the …
Corporate Philanthropic Giving, Advertising Intensity, And Industry Competition Level, Ran Zhang, Jigao Zhu, Heng Yue, Chunyan Zhu
Corporate Philanthropic Giving, Advertising Intensity, And Industry Competition Level, Ran Zhang, Jigao Zhu, Heng Yue, Chunyan Zhu
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
This article examines whether the likelihoodand amount of firm charitable giving in response tocatastrophic events are related to firm advertising intensity, and whether industry competition level moderatesthis relationship. Using data on Chinese firms’ philanthropicresponse to the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, we findthat firm advertising intensity is positively associated withboth the probability and the amount of corporate giving. The results also indicate that this positive advertisingintensity-philanthropic giving relationship is stronger incompetitive industries, and firms in competitive industriesare more likely to donate. This study thus provides evidencesuggesting that even in the wake of catastrophicevents, corporate philanthropic giving is strategic.

The Effect Of Internal Control Weakness Under Section 404 Of The Sarbanes-Oxley Act On Audit Fees, Jong-Hag Choi, Jeong-Bon Kim, Soo Young Kwon, Yoonseok Zang
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
In this paper, we investigate the effect of the enactment of the SarbanesOxleyAct (SOX) in 2002 on audit pricing, using a sample of 252 firms that received an “Ineffective” audit opinion and other firms that received cleanaudit opinion on the effectiveness of the internal control over financial reportingunder Section 404 of SOX. Our analyses show the following. First,we find that auditors charge significantly higher audit fees for all firms inthe post-SOX period than in the pre-SOX period. Second, we find that auditors’opinions on the weakness in internal control (WIC) are positively associatedwith audit fees, and that the positive association between …
Direct And Indirect Effects Of Internal Control Weakness And External Audit Effort On Accruals Quality: Evidence From A Unique Canadian Regulatory Setting, Hai Lu, Gordon D Richardson, Steven Salterio
Direct And Indirect Effects Of Internal Control Weakness And External Audit Effort On Accruals Quality: Evidence From A Unique Canadian Regulatory Setting, Hai Lu, Gordon D Richardson, Steven Salterio
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
Public disclosure about effectiveness of internal control systems is subject to much controversy in Canada, resulting in Canadian disclosures being made in Management Discussion and Analysis (MD&A). These disclosures are provided to investors without a definition of the weaknesses to be reported, without implementation effectiveness testing, no direct management certification and no external audit of such disclosures. Though the cost of such SOX North disclosures are lower than in the U.S setting, the credibility of these disclosures is far from assured, posing an important empirical issue for regulators interested in the cost versus benefit trade-off of various disclosure regimes. We …

Before Apple can wow its legions of devotees and win over new ones with its latest offerings, it needs a group of industrial designers to work their magic first. Highly integral to a product’s success yet often falling below the radar screen as a profession, industrial design involves a unique combination of factors – from studying market trends and human behaviour to conjuring new product categories. But what does it take for organisations to cultivate industrial design as a key competency?

Entrepreneurs Share Their Formula For Success: Failure, Knowledge@Smu
Knowledge@SMU
Entrepreneurship is so often associated with risk-taking that in safety-seeking Singapore, it would be quite natural to assume a rather weak spirit of enterprise. Such an assumption, of course, would only be partly true. After all, successful entrepreneurs need to possess more than just an appetite for risk; they need to be skilled at harvesting talent, tapping on their networks and navigating around business environments. Can such successes be taught? Panellists at a recent forum seem to think so – but only to a limited extent. They draw distinctions between formulaic prescriptions and advice, saying that while there are no …

If entrepreneurship requires true grit, then technopreneurship – a new-age term that describes entrepreneurship in technology sectors – is quite likely the ultimate test, given the highly dynamic nature of technological innovation and its dependency on a host of external factors. Would the iPhone have succeeded without the App store? Could the Blu-Ray have taken off without the backing of major Hollywood studios? Will people buy GPS systems without maps? Such are considerations that technopreneurs have little influence over, but must always bear in mind because technology, in and of itself, bears little meaning for end-consumers.

Changing business environments, a new generation of eager but aloof knowledge workers, and increasingly diverse work cultures imply that business leaders of today and tomorrow need new skill sets (and mindsets) to succeed. In this post "sub-prime" financial crisis era, core values like trust, integrity and compassion have become especially crucial. And according to the panel of prominent women business leaders, an authentic passion for the job – or that "fire in the belly" – can go a long way to inspire and motivate.

To get ahead, do women really need to inherit traditionally masculine traits? Feminists remain divided on an answer to this question. On the one hand, women have to navigate around the strong patriarchal values and traditions still carried by many cultures around the world. On the other hand, would caving into these social mores entrench and perpetuate these very patriarchal notions? In Southeast Asia, women are starting to rise up to leadership positions in companies and non-governmental organisations. In political leadership, however, Southeast Asian women lag behind most other regions in the world – including Africa and South Asia.
