On a per-capita basis, US prescription drug spending is more than twice that of comparable OECD peer nations and yet the health outcomes achieved are worse. Policymakers try to implement countermeasures, such as the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, to reduce the burden on the public but these countermeasures may result in unintended consequences. How Do Firms Respond To Reduced Private Equity Buyout Activity?, Yi-Hsin Lo

I investigate how firms respond to reduced private equity buyout activity in their home states by exploiting the state-by-state adoption of laws that increase the cost of buyouts. I find evidence suggestive of reduced firm efficiency. The firms also become less likely to go bankrupt or to relocate to other states. These findings suggest that the firms' managers may be starting to enjoy the quiet life. I also find a reduction in layoffs. Overall, the results indicate a trade-off: Whereas reduced private equity buyout activity increases managerial entrenchment, it also lowers firm exits and strengthens employees' job security.

This study explores the impact of marital status on employee workplace behavior and job performance. Specifically, it finds that compared to unmarried employees, married employees demonstrate higher career aspirations and job performance. Further analysis reveals that this effect is primarily driven by the enhancement of family and career commitments brought about by marriage. These increased commitments significantly contribute to the improvement of employees' career aspirations and job performance. Moreover, this study examines the gender differences in the influence of marital status on family and career commitments.

We examine how experiences with disruptive climate events impact the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) monitoring activities and subsequent firm behaviors. Using plausibly exogenous variation in the exposure of EPA regional offices to major hurricanes, we find that exposed EPA regulators increase their monitoring efforts, measured by both inspection frequency and length, at facilities located in their jurisdictions but outside the disaster zone. This effect diminishes over time and is stronger for regulators located closer to the disaster area or experiencing the disaster for the first time. Importantly, the heightened regulatory monitoring following disasters has real effects on regulated facilities–they face …

Using rapid expansion of the Beijing subway from 2000 to 2018, we analyze its impact on collaborative matches in innovations. We find that an hour reduction in travel time between a pair of locations in Beijing brought 14.85% to 37.69% increase in collaborated patents. Far-apart location pairs were more affected, and the local average causal response is approximately 34.92% to 82.29%. The effect is mainly driven by increased matches among highly productive innovators. The entry of new innovators, relocation of existing innovators, and collaborations among low-productive innovators also contribute to the increase in collaborative matches, especially in the long run.

The majority of research on voice has focused on how employee voice influences voicers and targets of voice (e.g. supervisors and organizations). We advance theory on voice by examining how third-party observers react to expressions of voice behavior by coworkers. Drawing from affective events theory (AET), we examine the potential benefits and detriments of coworker voice behaviours. Results from an experience sampling study and an experiment revealed that coworker voice was associated with an increase in third-party observers' inspiration, prompting third-party observers to engage in their own voice behaviours. This study investigates the impact of director overseas experience on firms’ cross-border acquisition decisions. We find that firms with directors who have overseas experience tend to engage in more cross-border acquisitions. This finding remains robust across various types of overseas experience. This correlation is unlikely to be influenced by omitted variable biases or driven by reverse causality, where firms deliberately employ directors with overseas experience before initiating cross-border acquisitions. Additionally, director overseas experience is associated with higher announcement returns and enhanced post-merger performance. Further analysis reveals that director overseas experience affects cross-border acquisition decisions primarily through the cultural inclusivity channel. …

Bond defaults are undesirable yet natural outcomes of risky investments. What is also crucial but hitherto underexplored is the unexpectedness of defaults. We develop a parsimonious measure of default unexpectedness and highlight its economic importance by demonstrating that unexpected defaults are associated with unfavorable recovery outcomes and adverse price changes in peer firm bonds. We then examine how default unexpectedness relates to information opacity. We find that firms with opaque financial reporting and weak voluntary disclosure experience more unexpected defaults. The Spillover Effects Of Environmental Lawsuits On Industry Peers, Xia Chen, Qiang Cheng, Xuefan Peng, Ziliang Zhan

We examine the spillover effects of high-profile environmental lawsuits on industry peers. We find that compared with control firms, industry peers experience a decrease in chemical releases and an increase in pollution-related disclosures after the lawsuits. These results are more pronounced for the industry peers who have higher levels of chemical releases in the pre-lawsuit period and who are the peers of firms sued for damage to human health. Lastly, we provide confirmatory evidence that industry peers increase abatement activities after the lawsuits and experience a decline in financial performance, likely due to the increase in abatement costs.

Holding a formal leadership role is often idealized, motivating individuals to pursue such positions for independence and success. However, recent reports highlight significant challenges faced by leaders, particularly during as well as after the COVID-19 pandemic, including increased work demands and reduced well-being. This review takes a critical stance and examines whether formal leaders bear a well-being cost.
