The Interrelationships Between Reit Capital Structure And Investment, Jamie Alcock, Eva Steiner

We explore the interdependence of investment and financing choices in US listed Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) in the period 1973-2011. We find that the investment and financing choices of REITs are interdependent, but they are not made simultaneously. Our results suggest that investment determines leverage, but leverage has no apparent effect on investment decisions. Conversely, the debt-overhang conflict between shareholders and debt holders that theoretically drives the reverse influence of leverage on the optimal investment policy does not appear to filter through to the actual investment choices of REITs. We examine four key conceptual tensions that are at the heart of many financial reporting dilemmas: stocks versus flows, ex ante versus ex post, conventions versus economic substance, and top-down design versus bottom-up evolution as sources of accounting practice. Associated with each of these conceptual dimensions is an accounting duality; in some cases, one side (e.g., stocks) is easier to measure in a reliable manner, while the other side (e.g., flows) is easier to measure in other instances. We suggest that financial reporting would benefit from a willingness to pay attention to, and find compromise between, both sides of these …

The Global Emergence Of Chinese Multinationals: A Resource-Based View Of Ownership And Performance, Xiaoming He, Subrata Chakrabarty, Lorraine Eden

We apply insights from the resource-based view to better understand the emergence of Chinese multinational companies (MNCs) and to investigate the determinants of their performance. We argue that state ownership and foreign-corporate ownership have played a role in providing Chinese MNCs with access to key resources to improve their performance. Moreover, given the dominant role of government policies in China, Chinese MNCs are more profitable when their ownership structures align more closely with attributes favored by government policies. Our findings provide strong support to our arguments. This study provides new insights into how ownership structure leads to heterogeneity in MNC …

Mobile devices are becoming a method to provide an efficient and convenient way to access, find and share information; however, the availability of this information has caused an increase in cyber attacks. Currently, cyber threats range from Trojans and viruses to botnets and toolkits. Presently, 96% of mobile devices do not have pre-installed security software while approximately 65% of the vulnerabilities are found within the application layer. For the development of social entrepreneurs it is imperative that educators embrace the concepts and process of social entrepreneurship (Dees, 1998). Exploration of these concepts in education could prove beneficial to the community (Haugh, 2005). This chapter focuses on the positives of introducing social entrepreneurship education at the primary and secondary levels of education. This article examines the overseas behaviour of Chinese non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in two African nations, Ethiopia an Malawi, with varying political regime types. Our inding suggest that, irrespective of regime type, Chinese NGOs have yet to make a substantial impact in either nation. We argue that, espite the strength o the Chinese state an high level of international development assistance given, domestic politics and regulatory frameworks in host nations still matter a great deal. This paper considers platform competition in a two-sided market that includes buyers and sellers. One of the platforms benefits from a favorable coordination bias in the market, in that for this platform it is less costly than for the other platform to convince customers that the two sides will coordinate on joining it. We find that the degree of the coordination bias affects the platform's decision regarding the business model (i.e., whether to subsidize buyers or sellers), the access fees and the size of the platform. A slight increase in the coordination bias may induce the advantaged platform to switch …
