The Bride Is Keeping Her Name: A 35-Year Retrospective Analysis Of Trends And Correlates, Richard E. Kopelman, Rita Shea-Van Fossen, Eletherios Paraskevas, Leanna Lawter, David J. Prottas

HCBE Faculty Articles

We used data obtained from wedding announcements in the New York Times newspaper from 1971 through 2005 (N = 2,400) to test 9 hypotheses related to brides’ decisions to change or retain their maiden names upon marriage. As predicted, a trend was found in brides keeping their surname, and correlates included the bride’s occupation, education, age, and the type of ceremony (religious versus nonsectarian). Partial support was found for the following correlates: officiants representing different religions, brides with one or both parents deceased, and brides whose parents had divorced or separated. There was mixed support for the hypothesis that a …

HCBE Faculty Articles

In Iran, management and leadership trends can be traced back for thousands of years of experience. This study focused on the management skills of respondents from Iran to see if gender, age and longevity in management can be significant factors in their technical, human and conceptual competencies. The results of 421 respondents show that there are significant differences linked to gender, age, and management experience. Age and management experience are positively related to better technical, human and conceptual scores. Implications for educators, managers, and human resource professionals are presented.

A Cross-Cultural Investigation Of Religious Affiliation Differences In Personal Values Across 11 Countries And Six Regions, Shaista E. Khilji, Edward F. Murphy, Bahaudin G. Mujtaba

HCBE Faculty Presentations

The purpose of this study was to reevaluate the dominant influence of the theory of secularization in the management literature by exploring religious affiliation differences in the personal values of respondents. We used a large dataset drawn from a collection of 11 developed and emerging countries, and found significant cross-cultural religious affiliation differences among terminal and instrumental values of Catholics, Christians, Buddhists, Muslims, Atheists, and Hindus. Although personal values were differentiated by religious affiliations, there were also some similarities across the sample. Managerial implications are discussed.

An Empirical Investigation Of The Link Between Transaction Costs And Governance Structures Of Off-Shoring Programs, Michael Rawdan, Ramdas Chandra, Ruth Clarke Jul 2008

An Empirical Investigation Of The Link Between Transaction Costs And Governance Structures Of Off-Shoring Programs, Michael Rawdan, Ramdas Chandra, Ruth Clarke

HCBE Faculty Presentations

This paper presents empirical findings regarding mode of governance and five dimensions of transaction costs. We discuss transaction cost economics in relation to the concept of outsourcing offshore, building hypotheses for testing. Starting with Coase (1937) academics have developed theory proposing that there are costs involved in organizing and managing transactions, both firm and market based. As firms vertically integrate or disaggregate in order to improve performance measured by profits, outsourcing has become more common as a way to take advantage of improved margins available in the market rather than in the traditional hierarchy. Outsourcing has quickly evolved to include …

HCBE Faculty Presentations

The Target Case Study Program was developed as a new, innovative staffing strategy. In the program, Target presented a university class with one of 15 cases focused on real problems faced by Target. Students teams then created solutions, presented the solutions to Target executives who judged the teams' efforts and awarded significant scholarship money to the winning student team. The purpose of the program was to strengthen existing partnerships between the retailer and universities and to better inform students about employment at Target. This and more was accomplished. As students developed solutions to the case they learned more about the …

HCBE Faculty Presentations

Over the past few years both the popular press and business press have been filled with stories about the growth of the HispanicAmerican population and the impact of that population growth on American business. U.S. Census data estimates project that HispanicAmerican households in the U.S will number approximately 13.5 million by 2010 and represent more than $670 billion in spending power. This symposium discusses a series of research programs focusing on Hispanic-Americans entrepreneurs, and is designed to engage the audience in a discussion of current research and developing ideas for future research and practice.

International Market Entry And Organizational Competency Development: A Case Study Of A Russian Oil And Gas Joint Venture, Paul M. Stephenson, Ruth Clarke Jun 2007

International Market Entry And Organizational Competency Development: A Case Study Of A Russian Oil And Gas Joint Venture, Paul M. Stephenson, Ruth Clarke

HCBE Faculty Presentations

We present an empirical study of competency development in a new joint venture, between a western firm and a Russian firm. Using transaction cost and knowledge management approaches, we propose working models for exploring the competency development dimension of a market entry strategy of the western firm in Russia. We consider organizational competency as measurable know-how, skills, behaviors, and attitudes of key employees that allows the company to meet their performance goals. Using a triangular case study approach the paper focuses on the well-site supervisor competency building process within the joint venture. We observe the critical elements of the competency …

The Role Of Social Capital In Creating Effective Global Supply Chains, Susan I. Scott, Ruth Clarke Jun 2007

The Role Of Social Capital In Creating Effective Global Supply Chains, Susan I. Scott, Ruth Clarke

HCBE Faculty Presentations

In this paper we examine the relationship between the concept of social capital and the creation of effective global supply chains. Recent literature cites the effective global supply chain as a source of competitive advantage for firms competing in the global economy. Evidence exists that global firms now compete through the entire supply chain for each industry, raising the bar for strategic consideration. A global supply chain is comprised of multiple organizations, geographically dispersed, but linked by economic transactions, which enable the root firm to satisfy customer needs. The increase in information technology management is critical in coordinating the work …
