E-Banking In Emerging Markets: Shifting The Competitive Landscape, Jennifer Isern, Ruth Clarke

This paper discusses the dynamics of competition in the financial services industry, and theories of competition that explain sometimes counter-intuitive effects observed over the last fifty years. We present arguments here that new forces are taking hold in the financial services industry that may change existing competition paradigms. Electronic banking is thriving in Japan, Europe, and the U.S. as customers click their mouse, press telephone keys, and slide cards to conduct their banking. Increasingly, banks and other financial service providers are starting to launch many of these same innovations in developing countries. Emerging markets are in the position of developing …

Listing Criteria For The Multiple Listing Of Equity Options, Rebecca Abraham, Charlie W. Harrington, Jr.

Equity options are listed on the American Stock Exchange Board Options Exchange, Philadelphia Stock Exchange, Pacific Stock Exchange, International Securities Exchange, and Boston Stock Exchange. This study identified the criteria for selection of options for listing over tile August-September 1999, 2000-2002, and 2003-2005 periods. Trading volume and size were the primary selection criteria for all three periods. Volatility was a selection criterion during the preperiod (1 997- 1998) only. No clearly defined selection criteria emerged for listings on the third exchange in 2000-2002 or on two or three exchanging in 2003-2005.

Determinants Of Option Spreads In A Multiple Listing Environment, Rebecca Abraham, Charlie W. Harrington, Jr.

This study empirically determined the predictors of bid-ask spreads of equity options within the context of the current multiple-listed options market. Price emerged as the most powerful predictor followed by multiple listing. Price and volatility increased spreads, while multiple listing and volume reduced them. Multiple listing was more powerful than volume in explaining spreads. This study establishes that spread reductions prevail several years after initial multiple listing and supports the importance of competition over economies of scale in explaining spreads.
