The Life Cycle Of A Pandemic Crisis: Sars Impact On Air Travel, Jun Liu, Steven E. Moss, Jonathan Zhang Apr 2010

The Life Cycle Of A Pandemic Crisis: Sars Impact On Air Travel, Jun Liu, Steven E. Moss, Jonathan Zhang

Logistics & Supply Chain Management: Faculty Presentations (1998-2020)

This paper studies the effects of the SARS outbreak on air travel between the US and three destinations; China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. ARIMA models with interventions are used to estimate the timing, depth and shape of SARS impact on international air travel. Links between empirical findings and a conceptual framework for analyzing the life cycle of a crisis are established. The conceptual framework uses situational choice and governmental public relations differences by location to explain the response patterns to the crises. The research finds significant evidence that the impact and life cycle of SARS effect on air travel varies …

Accidents Will Happen. Do Safety Systems Improve Warehouse Safety Performance?, Rene B. M. De Koster, B. M. Balk, I Davelaar, M. Martens Jan 2010

Accidents Will Happen. Do Safety Systems Improve Warehouse Safety Performance?, Rene B. M. De Koster, B. M. Balk, I Davelaar, M. Martens

11th IMHRC Proceedings (Milwaukee, Wisconsin. USA – 2010)

Safety is becoming more and more an issue in warehouses. In the literature, effective measures leading to increased occupational health and safety have hardly been researched. Most research focuses on the impact of perceived safety-related leadership of managers and worker safety consciousness on ‘safety climate’ and workers’ safe behavior. We have carried out exploratory research into which measures really improve the safety performance of a warehouse. We particularly focus on the effects of (1) safety-related work procedures, (2) safety leadership, and (3) workers’ safety consciousness. Based on a survey we show that safety leadership and safety-related work procedures significantly drive …

Optimizing The Rearrangement Process In A Dedicated Warehouse, Hector J. Carlo, German E. Giraldo Jan 2010

Optimizing The Rearrangement Process In A Dedicated Warehouse, Hector J. Carlo, German E. Giraldo

11th IMHRC Proceedings (Milwaukee, Wisconsin. USA – 2010)

Determining the optimal storage assignment for products in a dedicated warehouse has been addressed extensively in the Facility Logistics literature. However, the process of implementing a particular storage assignment given the current location of products has not received much attention in the existing literature. Typically, warehouses use downtime or overtime to remove products from their current location and move them to the suggested location. This work presents the Rearrange-While-Working (RWW) policy to optimize the process of rearranging a dedicated warehouse. The RWW policy seeks to relocate products in a warehouse from the initial arrangement to the optimal arrangement while serving …

A New Milp Approach For The Facility Layout Design Problem With Rectangular And L/T Shaped Departments, Yossi Bukchin, Michal Tzur Jan 2010

A New Milp Approach For The Facility Layout Design Problem With Rectangular And L/T Shaped Departments, Yossi Bukchin, Michal Tzur

11th IMHRC Proceedings (Milwaukee, Wisconsin. USA – 2010)

In this paper we propose a new approach for the facility layout problem (FLP) and suggest new mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) formulations. The proposed approach considers simultaneously the location of the departments within the facility and the internal arrangement of the machines. Two models are suggested, where the first addresses the rectangular department case and the second allows nonrectangular departments defined by an L/T shape. New regularity constraints are developed to avoid irregular department shapes.

Strategic Design Of A Robust Supply Chain, Marc Goetschalckx, Edward Huang Jan 2010

Strategic Design Of A Robust Supply Chain, Marc Goetschalckx, Edward Huang

11th IMHRC Proceedings (Milwaukee, Wisconsin. USA – 2010)

The strategic design of a robust supply chain has as goal the configuration of the supply chain structure so that the performance of the supply chain remains of a consistently high quality for all possible future scenarios. We model this goal with an objective function that trades off the central tendency of the supply chain profit with the dispersion of the profit as measured by the standard deviation for any value of the weights assigned to the two components. However, the standard deviation, used as the dispersion penalty for profit maximization, has a square root expression which makes standard maximization …

Evaluating The Effect Of Operational Conditions And Practices On Warehouse Performance, Andrew L. Johnson Jan 2010

Evaluating The Effect Of Operational Conditions And Practices On Warehouse Performance, Andrew L. Johnson

11th IMHRC Proceedings (Milwaukee, Wisconsin. USA – 2010)

Analyzing warehouse performance across different environments is critical to improving overall productivity and reducing costs. Although two-stage DEA estimators have been shown to be statistically consistent, the finite sample bias of DEA in the first stage carries over to the secondstage regression, which causes bias in the estimated coefficients of the contextual variables. The bias is particularly severe when the contextual variables are correlated with inputs. To address this shortcoming, we apply insights from Johnson and Kuosmanen (2010), who demonstrate that DEA can be formulated as a constrained special case of the Convex Nonparametric Least Squares (CNLS) regression to develop …

Comparing Transport Policies In A Full-Scale 300mm Wafer Manufacturing Facility, J. E. Kiba, S. Dauz`Ere-P´Er`Es, C. Yugma, G. Lamiable Jan 2010

Comparing Transport Policies In A Full-Scale 300mm Wafer Manufacturing Facility, J. E. Kiba, S. Dauz`Ere-P´Er`Es, C. Yugma, G. Lamiable

11th IMHRC Proceedings (Milwaukee, Wisconsin. USA – 2010)

Research in semiconductor manufacturing ideally wants to determine the “best” transport policy to ensure continuous production. Determining such a policy is difficult because it depends on many factors such as the layout, the product types, the equipment, etc. Most of the transport policies found in the literature combine dispatching policies (scheduling of transport requests) and routing policies (selection of the path to move from one point to another). This paper investigates a policy called "minimum service" which consists in keeping a minimum number of available vehicles in bays, so that they can quickly answer transport requests and empty travel times …

The Human-Centric Warehouse, Kevin R. Gue Jan 2010

The Human-Centric Warehouse, Kevin R. Gue

11th IMHRC Proceedings (Milwaukee, Wisconsin. USA – 2010)

In theory and in practice, the objective of warehouse design has long been to meet operational requirements of throughput and service performance at minimum cost. A natural product of this “bottom line” approach has been warehouse buildings and operations ill-suited to the humans who spend their working lives interacting with them. We offer an explanation for the current approach, and argue that a new approach— a new paradigm —is needed. We then describe a comprehensive approach to warehouse design that includes human well-being as a primary goal.

Forklift Routing In Warehouses Using Dual-Commands And Stackable Pallets, Ahmed Hassan, Bill Ferrell Jan 2010

Forklift Routing In Warehouses Using Dual-Commands And Stackable Pallets, Ahmed Hassan, Bill Ferrell

11th IMHRC Proceedings (Milwaukee, Wisconsin. USA – 2010)

This research determines time optimal routes for loading and picking pallets that can be stacked on top of each other during transport in a manual warehouse that only contains full pallets and utilizes single deep storage. This research was motivated by the fact that we are seeing this situation on an ever increasing basis, particularly in warehouses that supply parts to automotive assembly. In practice, forklift drivers have developed strategies to take advantage of this opportunity but to our knowledge there is no literature that addresses this problem rigorously. The important features of this work are that a time based …

Plug-And-Work Material Handling Systems, Kai Furmans, Frank Schonung, Kevin R. Gue Jan 2010

Plug-And-Work Material Handling Systems, Kai Furmans, Frank Schonung, Kevin R. Gue

11th IMHRC Proceedings (Milwaukee, Wisconsin. USA – 2010)

One disadvantage of automated material handling systems is their relative Inflexibility: once racks are installed and conveyors are laid, making even mi-nor changes to a system can be cumbersome and expensive. However, recent progress in the capabilities and cost of basic system components, such as controllers, drives, and sensors, has made possible a new class of material handling systems having a much higher degree of flexibility. We propose underlying de- sign principles for such systems and describe several prototype plug-and-work" systems, which feature decentralized control and ease of reconfiguration.

Control Policies For A Dynamic Storage System With Multiple Lifts And Shuttles, Iris F.A. Vis, Hector J. Carlo, Paloma Diaz, Maria E. Laboy, Bruno Vanwijgaarden Jan 2010

Control Policies For A Dynamic Storage System With Multiple Lifts And Shuttles, Iris F.A. Vis, Hector J. Carlo, Paloma Diaz, Maria E. Laboy, Bruno Vanwijgaarden

11th IMHRC Proceedings (Milwaukee, Wisconsin. USA – 2010)

New types of Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems, able to achieve high throughput levels, are continuously being developed and require new control polices to take full advantage of the developed system. In this paper we study a dynamic storage system as developed by Vanderlande Industries consisting of a conveyor, two lifts, multiple transfer shuttles, and a storage rack. One of the decision problems for this system is the scheduling problem of the two lifts. In other words, which lift is going to handle which request and in which order. In this paper, we derive an integrated look-ahead heuristic based on …

The process use of expert-to-matrix learning is explained and then exampled across undergraduate principles of marketing classes and a graduate foundations of marketing course. Through expert-to-matrix learning students practice teamwork, presentation, and critical thinking skills. The technique is an example of cooperative learning, where students discuss concepts, seek explanations, and develop a common response to objectives that they present to others. They gain positive learning benefits like empowerment and responsible association. Matrix learning maximizes performance, morale, and well being of students. Teams are evaluated on the thoroughness and quality of their shared understanding of daily course objectives through class presentations. …

Customer Compliance Through Automated Marketing In Higher Education Practice, Edward Kasabov Jan 2010

Customer Compliance Through Automated Marketing In Higher Education Practice, Edward Kasabov

AMTP Proceedings 2010

The Marketing Concept, Relationship Marketing Concept, and associated conceptions of customer orientation and customer centricity have been imported into pedagogy. Using empirical findings about Customer Compliance through Automated Marketing, we argue that Higher Education institutions can successfully supplant the currently dominant customer-centric thinking with the successful practices of what we refer to as ‘customer compliance’ businesses (CCBMs). The CCBM philosophy and strategies defy traditional theories of dealing with customers and especially with dissatisfied customers during service recovery and complaint management. CCBM philosophy and success can be replicated by academic institutions as well. We provide specific advice on the application of …

Service-Learning Partnerships In Marketing Education: A Case Study In A Sales Management Course, Doris M. Shaw Jan 2010

Service-Learning Partnerships In Marketing Education: A Case Study In A Sales Management Course, Doris M. Shaw

AMTP Proceedings 2010

Marketing educators often collaborate with the business community to prepare students for the real world. Another option for doing so is via service-learning partnerships that tie nonprofit agencies to particular college courses over a period of time. This article describes how such a partnership was incorporated into a sales management course. Following a review of service learning literature, this manuscript will discuss how the partnership was developed and implemented, learning outcomes, and future considerations.

Student attitudes toward ethical business behaviors and academic issues such as the likelihood of academic dishonesty detection, the perceived effects of academic cheating, peer norms and past behavior are examined. The two groups report a very different pattern of responses. Students at private universities report lower cheating, plagiarizing, and committing other acts of dishonesty compared to students in public universities. Students in private universities are more aware of students being …

Budgeting In A Chaotic Economic Environment ... Factors Leading To Improvement, Nancy Coulmas Jan 2010

Budgeting In A Chaotic Economic Environment ... Factors Leading To Improvement, Nancy Coulmas

AMTP Proceedings 2010

Traditional budgets and budgeting processes have been identified as frustrating and inflexible. They are based on immovable targets and often lead to suboptimal attitudes and behaviors. When the budget process is performed in a chaotic economic environment, these negative aspects are exacerbated. This paper identifies and discusses actions that can be implemented to enhance the flexibility of budgets and their processes and to reduce the negative aspects involved.

Marketing Part-Time Mba Programs: Understanding The Need For And Dimensions Of Flexibility, Lynn C. Dailey

AMTP Proceedings 2010

Flexibility likely plays a major role in MBA recruitment, particularly for part-time MBA programs. This begs the question, what does flexibility really mean in regards to education? This paper examines the issue of MBA program flexibility. The paper utilizes exploratory research to help MBA marketers better understand consumers need for flexibility and to identify dimensions on which MBA marketers can build flexibility into their programs.

A Study Of Market Segmentation In High-Tech Startup Ventures, Alan D. Lish Jan 2010

A Study Of Market Segmentation In High-Tech Startup Ventures, Alan D. Lish

AMTP Proceedings 2010

Much has been written about the benefits of market segmentation. In fact, it provides the basis of most marketing strategies in larger firms. But while larger firms understand the benefits of market segmentation and put it into practice, many start-up firms seem to ignore or dismiss segmentation as an essential marketing strategy. This paper explores the practical use of market segmentation as it applies to high-tech start-ups, examines its use in those companies, and tries to determine if segmentation strategy is used by start-ups in other, non-traditional ways.

An Investigation Of The Relationships Among Market Power, Industry Concentration And Industry Share, Rick Mathisen, Tom Miller Jan 2010

An Investigation Of The Relationships Among Market Power, Industry Concentration And Industry Share, Rick Mathisen, Tom Miller

AMTP Proceedings 2010

In a previous study the authors investigated the relationship of market power to advertising investments, R&D investments and industry concentration. The findings revealed that although there was a positive correlation between market power and both advertising and R&D investments, there was a negative correlation to industry concentration.

The current study investigates the relationships between market power, industry concentration and industry share. Market power indicates the ability of a firm to have higher gross margins in a firm macro measure. Traditional market power measures at the micro level indicate the ability to increase the difference between price and marginal cost. This …

Successful Strategising Through Customer Exclusion, Edward Kasabov, Alex Warlow Jan 2010

Successful Strategising Through Customer Exclusion, Edward Kasabov, Alex Warlow

AMTP Proceedings 2010

Marketing tends to emphasise retaining existing customers and generating customer satisfaction and loyalty. However, observation of the current practices of businesses suggests that such an over-emphasis on customer satisfaction may be misplaced. Many successful companies have developed competitive advantage by practicing ‘Exclusion Marketing’. This discussion defines Exclusion Marketing, explores its main tenets and ingredients, and demonstrates how by implementing such tactics modern businesses can reduce the cost of their products and services while offering high levels of service to ‘good’ customers, while eliminating and ‘excluding’ troublesome or non profitable clients. This discussion contributes to debates on the relationship between companies …

Retiring Workers Could Present A Problem For Marketers, Even In A Recession, Eileen D. Weisenbach Keller, Doris M. Shaw Jan 2010

Retiring Workers Could Present A Problem For Marketers, Even In A Recession, Eileen D. Weisenbach Keller, Doris M. Shaw

AMTP Proceedings 2010

Today's workforce is aging fast. The tacit knowledge held by those approaching retirement is necessary for firms to compete in the increasingly competitive marketplace. While some research has been devoted to how older workers view their retirement will impact the workplace, minimal attention has been given to how younger workers view this issue. As companies strive to remain market-driven, this paper examines how younger personnel view the impact of retirement on their employers and the impending brain drain. A discussion of implications for the marketing function within firms also is provided.

Implications Of Contemporary Leadership Models On Sales Management, Ellen M. Raineri Jan 2010

Implications Of Contemporary Leadership Models On Sales Management, Ellen M. Raineri

AMTP Proceedings 2010

As organizations have discovered that they cannot solely compete on price, product, quality, or technology, organizations have sought the use of optimum leadership models to assist with competition and survival. After examining the evolution of three contemporary leadership models: Spiritual Leadership, Primal Leadership, and Innovative Leadership, it is shown that these models offer sustenance in various ways for organizations and employees. Furthermore, because of the introduction and practice of Spiritual Leadership, Primal Leadership, and Innovative Leadership, specific implications exist for sales management as related to their sales reps and to their customers.

Retail Prejudice: Does Marketplace Color Really Matter?, Sacha Joseph-Mathews Jan 2010

Retail Prejudice: Does Marketplace Color Really Matter?, Sacha Joseph-Mathews

AMTP Proceedings 2010

In the last decade, manufacturers, retailers and service providers alike have started paying significant attention to ethnic minority consumer segments. Several companies have increased their marketing budgets in the millions with the intention of attracting these consumers to their products, services and stores. Yet many retailers in particular are ill-equipped to deal with these new minority segments, and conventional wisdom suggests that simply attracting minority segments to stores may not be enough to ensure their return. This study seeks to examine two issues that are important to retailers who are focused on minority consumer segments: perceived retail prejudice and customer …

A Comparative Analysis Of Retail Store Image: Wal-Mart And Dillards, Charles E. Pettijohn, Linda S. Pettijohn, A J. Taylor, Andrew J. Newman

AMTP Proceedings 2010

The research in this manuscript reports on analyses of retail image which compares the images of two well- known U.S. retailers. The scale used is the research is one that has been specifically designed to evaluate consumers' perceptions of retailers. The results indicate that differential scale items are required to meaningfully assess different varieties of retail establishments. Specifically, the findings indicate that consumers assess retailers in a manner which seems consistent for retail store type. The study offers conclusions and insights based upon the differential items used to assess discount retailers and traditional department stores.

Loyalty Cards: A Review Of The Research And Suggestions For Future Research, David J. Burns Jan 2010

Loyalty Cards: A Review Of The Research And Suggestions For Future Research, David J. Burns

AMTP Proceedings 2010

Several larger retailers have adopted loyalty cards as a means to acquire information to better serve their customers. To participate in a loyalty card program, consumers must provide a significant amount of personal information to the retailer. How aware are consumers of the data which they are providing retailers by using loyalty cards? How aware are they of how their information is being used? The purpose of this paper is to begin to raise these issues.

Automated Marketing: A Narrow Focus On Technology Or An Emerging Business Philosophy?, Edward Kasabov Jan 2010

Automated Marketing: A Narrow Focus On Technology Or An Emerging Business Philosophy?, Edward Kasabov

AMTP Proceedings 2010

As a new area of academic inquiry, Automated Marketing is in its adolescence but has proved to be fast developing and very innovative, mirroring the relatively early stage of the development and application of the technologies that have enabled it. This article widens the understanding of this field of study, which is important both to practice and theory, by drawing attention to two deficiencies: not much has been written on Automated Marketing as such and the little that has been written adopts a narrow technical view while overlooking the significance and impact that it has on marketing, business strategy and …
