Soccer Marketing In The United States, Brian Crow, Dennis Phillips, Dallas Branch, Greg Hutton Jan 2013

Soccer Marketing In The United States, Brian Crow, Dennis Phillips, Dallas Branch, Greg Hutton

AMTP Proceedings 2013

Soccer is continuing to grow in popularity in the United States. According to the U.S. Soccer Federation, there are more than 4 million players in the US, more than double the number in 1990 (Belson, 2010). The Sports and Fitness Industry Association (formerly SGMA) has found that total participation in soccer had increased nearly 3% annually in 2011 (Physical Activity Council, 2011). According to another SFIA study, however, a shortage of facilities and emphasis on tournament and showcase events may result in potential future downturn in participation (Athletic Business, 2012). There is also a shifting emphasis from tournament and showcase …

Incivility In Academe: What If The Instigator Is A High Performer?, Feruzan Irani Williams, Constance Campbell, Luther T. Denton Jan 2013

Incivility In Academe: What If The Instigator Is A High Performer?, Feruzan Irani Williams, Constance Campbell, Luther T. Denton

Management: Faculty Publications

This analysis of workplace incivility focuses on instigators who are high performers, but have a negative effect on morale. We explore antecedents, manifestations, and consequences associated with these instigators, whom we label “High Performing Instigators.” This qualitative study indicates that HPIs are common in academe and engage in a broad spectrum of uncivil behaviors. The consequences of HPI behavior result in losses for all involved – loss of respect, time, emotional energy, and morale. One important finding is that there seems to be no change in HPI behavior in academe when comparing preand post-tenure status of faculty identified as HPI.

The Fruitcake Capital Of The World, Sara J. Grimes, Michael P. Mcdonald, John Leaptrott Jan 2013

The Fruitcake Capital Of The World, Sara J. Grimes, Michael P. Mcdonald, John Leaptrott

Management: Faculty Publications

Two different fruitcake companies in the same small town are discussed and their widely different strategies are presented. Each of the entrepreneurs began working with a “master baker” as little boys but later followed different paths to develop a successful fruitcake business. A brief history of the fruitcake is offered as evidence that the product has been around for hundreds of years and will likely not go away anytime soon in spite of the ridicule and humor that has surrounded fruitcakes during the past twenty-five years.

Establishing Cognitive Legitimacy In Emerging Organizations: The Role Of Prestige, Cheryl R. Mitteness, Melissa S. Baucus, William I. Norton Jr. Jan 2013

Establishing Cognitive Legitimacy In Emerging Organizations: The Role Of Prestige, Cheryl R. Mitteness, Melissa S. Baucus, William I. Norton Jr.

Management: Faculty Publications

Entrepreneurs with venture ideas must establish cognitive legitimacy so they can acquire essential resources needed for survival. We extend the concept of cognitive legitimacy by developing a model through which entrepreneurs in emerging high growth organizations attempt to establish and build cognitive legitimacy. This is based on the composition of their new venture team and advisory board. Novice entrepreneurs can draw on the prestige of their new venture team and advisory board to enhance perceptions of their emerging organization's cognitive legitimacy. Novelty of the venture idea moderates relationships between both new venture team prestige and advisory board prestige and cognitive …

Emotional Intelligence: The Antidote To Persuasion?, Rose Opengart, Michael Mccall Jan 2013

Emotional Intelligence: The Antidote To Persuasion?, Rose Opengart, Michael Mccall

AMTP Proceedings 2013

The study of emotion can be traced back to the early work of William James (1884). Consequently, it is hardly surprising that such a fundamental building block of human experience remains a fertile area for academic researchers and practitioners in fields as diverse as psychology, economics and marketing. Although there have been numerous calls for marketers to focus on touching customers’ emotions, a number of important gaps remain. We consider here, the notion that emotional intelligence mediates the impact of social influence attempts in consumer decision making. Specifically, we argue that emotional intelligence may serve to mute and/or lessen individual …

Differentiating Financial Service Brands Through The Multilayered Service Strategy (Mss): Some Insights Insights From The Resource Based View Of The Firm, Olutayo Otubanjo Jan 2013

Differentiating Financial Service Brands Through The Multilayered Service Strategy (Mss): Some Insights Insights From The Resource Based View Of The Firm, Olutayo Otubanjo

AMTP Proceedings 2013

This paper examines how financial service organizations operating in the Nigerian banking industry can be effectively managed to achieve brand differentiation. In order to achieve this objective, a service brand model was reviewed and critiqued and a Multilayered Service Strategy (MSS) model was put forward as an effective model for service brand differentiation. Consequently, sixteen leading-edge marketing and communication practitioners were engaged to examine the effectiveness of the model through in-depth interviews. Findings from the analysis of data indicate that an effective differentiation of a service brand cannot be achieved through the adoption of a single business or organizational factor. …

How A Small Rural University Can Effectively Approach High School Students?, Jianfeng Wang, Liza Jussiaume, Arnaud Jaquier, Yasmine Fofana, Chuck Compton, James Davis, Stephanie Walker

AMTP Proceedings 2013

Nowadays many small rural universities or colleges are faced with the challenge of how to expand schools' student body. Given the limited budget, these schools need to make preliminary decisions on how to better reach high school students in order to achieve optimal enrollment goals. In this study, a survey was conducted to make an attempt at determining how a small rural university can effectively approach its anticipated target market. The objectives of this study are: 1. to determine how the target audiences hear about the university; 2. to determine who makes the final decisions regarding the target audience’s future …

Examining Organizational Justice In The Context Of Lmx And The Effect Of Lmx On Trust And Job Performance, Yong-Ki Lee, Sally Kim, Mun-Hyun Son, Min-Seong Kim

AMTP Proceedings 2013

Services marketing and organizational behavior researchers have studied factors that have a positive influence on employees’ job performance. They viewed that the manager’s role in dealing with his/her subordinates is critical in producing the desired outcomes such as employee job performance. This study based on organizational justice and Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) theory, presents and tests a model, in which relationships among justice, LMX, trust, and job performance are examined. More specifically, the study examines the impact of organizational justice on the quality of LMX and the effect of LMX on employees’ attitudinal and behavioral aspects (trust and job performance). The …

Using Client Based Projects (Cbss) In Mba Marketing Programs To Bridge The Gap Between Theory And Practice, Lynn C. Dailey Jan 2013

Using Client Based Projects (Cbss) In Mba Marketing Programs To Bridge The Gap Between Theory And Practice, Lynn C. Dailey

AMTP Proceedings 2013

The ability to apply marketing knowledge is a key skill needed by marketing graduates. This is especially true in MBA education. Historically, academics have stressed theory while practitioners have stressed practice. Experiential learning can bridge the gap between theory and practice. One important form of experiential learning is having students participate in client based projects (CBP). Many professors are hesitant to take on CBPs because they appear to be time intensive and riskier to manage as opposed to traditional case studies; however, this paper shows a step by step process for implementing CBPs in the classroom that has been successfully …

Utilizing Relationship Marketing And Partnership Development As Critical Elements For Developing And Transforming Leadership Programs And Courses: Best Practice, Howard F. Rudd Jr., Thomas Kent, Carrie A. Blair Jan 2013

Utilizing Relationship Marketing And Partnership Development As Critical Elements For Developing And Transforming Leadership Programs And Courses: Best Practice, Howard F. Rudd Jr., Thomas Kent, Carrie A. Blair

AMTP Proceedings 2013

This paper utilizes some of the same literature of relationship marketing and partnership building as previous AMTP papers but applies these variables within the context of developing and transforming leadership programs and courses offered to undergraduate students. More specifically, the focus of this paper is on required and elective courses that are components of a leadership program including leadership and management development and human resource management. In addition, a most innovative noncurricular or extra-mural model program for leadership development that has already been replicated within another discipline on campus will also be examined as to its value added. Their use …

The Effect Of Antecedent Mood On Customer Loyalty Intentions: A Mood-By-Gender Interaction, Michael L. Thomas, Lindsay Larson, Linda G. Mullen Jan 2013

The Effect Of Antecedent Mood On Customer Loyalty Intentions: A Mood-By-Gender Interaction, Michael L. Thomas, Lindsay Larson, Linda G. Mullen

AMTP Proceedings 2013

This study suggests that induced antecedent moods may, in a systematic manner, influence subsequent levels of loyalty intention within consumer scenarios. Furthermore, this research finds that there exists differential responses to induced mood states by gender, which fall in line with research on the underlying gender differences in cognitive processing, levels of risk aversion, motivation, and the experience of emotion while shopping. Past studies in this area have shown only a mild connection between induced antecedent mood state and loyalty intentions, which may be due in part to the issue of an emotion by gender interaction. This paper reinforces previous …

The Role Of Empathy In The Benefits Sought From Volunteering, David J. Burns Jan 2013

The Role Of Empathy In The Benefits Sought From Volunteering, David J. Burns

AMTP Proceedings 2013

Increasing needs for volunteers have led many nonprofit organizations to seek to understand the benefits sought by individuals from volunteering. This study examines empathy. Empathy is believed to be one of the causes of individuals engaging in helping or prosocial behavior, an activity which includes volunteering. What role does empathy play in the benefits sought by individuals from volunteering? The objective of this study is to examine this question. The relationship between empathy and benefits sought by collegiate business students from volunteering are explored. Individuals who possess relatively higher levels of empathy appear to be more likely to participate in …

Finally, market-specific factor influencing implementation are discussed.

Model Size In Magazine Advertising And Body Esteem Among Female College Students: The Moderating Role Of Bmi, James A. Roberts, Chloe' A. Roberts Jan 2013

Model Size In Magazine Advertising And Body Esteem Among Female College Students: The Moderating Role Of Bmi, James A. Roberts, Chloe' A. Roberts

AMTP Proceedings 2013

Weight and body concerns have reached epidemic proportions among female college students. Such high levels of body dissatisfaction can lead to disastrous results. Since the mass media is considered an important purveyor of the thin ideal, the present study investigated the impact model size in magazine advertising has on the body esteem of female college students. Because it is unlikely that all women will respond similarly to the models depicted in such ads, the present study tested the potentially moderating role of Body Mass Index (BMI) on the model size – body esteem relationship. As hypothesized, subject BMI did moderate …

Effectiveness Of Green Olympic Initiatives On Reasons Affecting Residents’ Actions To Support The Olympic Movement, Liyan Jin, Kevin K. Byon, James J. Zhang, Neil Xindong Ma, Daniel P. Connaughton

AMTP Proceedings 2013

The world faces major environmental challenges that affect the well-being of human beings, plants, and wildlife. The Olympic Games, one of the most influential sport events, should pay special attention to environmental issues. In 1996, the environmental element became a central factor of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) (IOC, 2009). To scientifically and comprehensively evaluate the impact of the Olympics on the host city, the IOC launched the Olympic Games Global Impact (OGGI) study in 2003 (IOC, 2006). This study begins two years before the host city is selected, and terminates two years after hosting the Games (IOC, 2006). One …

Exploring The Factors Affecting The Perceived Program Quality Of International Sports Education Programs: The Case Of A Chinese Sports University, Luke Lunhua Mao, James Zhang

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

This study explored and tested factors affecting the perceived quality of international sports education provisions in the context of a Chinese sports university. Based on a comprehensive literature review, on-site observations, interviews with students and administrators, and a test of content validity by a panel of experts, a questionnaire was developed and administered to 61 international students attending a sports university in China. An exploratory factor analysis produced five factors related to perceived program quality, with 22 items retained (i.e., leaning environment, service orientation, administrative professionalism, content assurance, and academic growth). Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that these program quality factors …

An Enhanced Model For Managing Change In Organizations, Thomas A. Pollack, John M. Lanasa, Dorene Ciletti Dec 2012

An Enhanced Model For Managing Change In Organizations, Thomas A. Pollack, John M. Lanasa, Dorene Ciletti

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

Change has become a “way of life” in organizations. The pace of change has increased substantially in recent years as a result of issues such as the pressures of global competition the impact of the Internet, customer demands and ever changing enhancement of technical capabilities. These changes affect what people do and how they fulfill their responsibilities, and therefore, there are varied reactions Historically, failures in change implementation have not been attributable to a lack of technical feasibility and functionality but instead have been the result of employee resistance. The difficulty of implementing organizational change has presented an ongoing challenge …

Consumer Response To Outsourced 1-800 Calls: It’S The Solution Not The Country, Richard Feinberg, Wenti Xu, Leigh Hokama Dec 2012

Consumer Response To Outsourced 1-800 Calls: It’S The Solution Not The Country, Richard Feinberg, Wenti Xu, Leigh Hokama

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

The growth of call center outsourcing and its emergence as a political and economic issue may have obscured some very important business and consumer issues. It is believed by many that consumers cannot be satisfied when calls are outsourced (offshored to India for example). The purpose of this study is to understand the relationship between where a call is answered and what happened on that call. In this study call outsourcing is placed within the well understood area of country-oforigin effects. Two experiments were completed in which outsourced country was manipulated with call outcome (resolution or no resolution). The findings …

Moral Foundation Theory And Marketing, Steve Lemay, James Coleman, Dave Mcmahon Dec 2012

Moral Foundation Theory And Marketing, Steve Lemay, James Coleman, Dave Mcmahon

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

In setting the stage for Moral Foundations Theory (MFT), Jon Haidt (2004) identified five foundations of intuitive ethics: 1) harm/care; 2) fairness/reciprocity; 3) ingroup/loyalty; 4) authority/respect; 5) and purity/sanctity. Each foundation could have implications for the content of marketing messages, but this research is the first attempt to test those implications in specific markets with specific products. This research explores the practical, promotional uses of John Haidt’s Moral Foundation Theory. Haidt’s work shows a strong relationship between his moral foundations and political orientation. Since marketers can readily get political data at the county level in the United States, these foundations …

Conditional Lot Splitting To Avoid Setups While Reducing Flow Time, Jacob V. Simons, Mark E. Kraus, Willis Mwangola, Gerard Burke Nov 2012

Conditional Lot Splitting To Avoid Setups While Reducing Flow Time, Jacob V. Simons, Mark E. Kraus, Willis Mwangola, Gerard Burke

Logistics & Supply Chain Management: Faculty Publications

Previous research has clearly and consistently shown that flow time advantages accrue from splitting production lots into smaller transfer batches or sub-lots. Less extensively discussed, and certainly undesired, is the fact that lot splitting may dramatically increase the number of setups required, making it impractical in some settings. This paper describes and demonstrates a primary cause of these “extra” setups. It then proposes and evaluates decision rules which selectively invoke lot splitting in an attempt to avoid extra setups. For the closed job shop environment tested, our results indicate that conditional logic can achieve a substantial portion of lot splitting’s …

Control And Fairness In Customer Service, Odile J. Streed, Albert Kagan Oct 2012

Control And Fairness In Customer Service, Odile J. Streed, Albert Kagan

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

Using the concept of “role theories”, the notions of fairness, freedom versus control, and psychological reactance this article examines how these human factors interact in quick service restaurant (QSR) encounters. This research measures the degree of improvement in customer satisfaction as choices offered to customers, employees’ involvement and speed of delivery, vary. Compensatory effects between control and fairness indicate that QSR chains with a strong tradition of control could introduce fairness attributes into the service encounter and increase customer satisfaction without substantially changing existing operating processes. Traditional QSR models may improve competitiveness and strengthen brand image by developing a stronger …

The Role Of Customer Loyalty To The Salesperson In Generating Premium Revenue For Retailers, Ronald A. Clark, James J. Zboja, Clay M. Voorhees Oct 2012

The Role Of Customer Loyalty To The Salesperson In Generating Premium Revenue For Retailers, Ronald A. Clark, James J. Zboja, Clay M. Voorhees

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

The findings of this research underscore the relative importance of loyalty to the salesperson, when compared with retailer trust and satisfaction, on outcomes such as loyalty to the retailer and a consumer’s willingness to pay price premiums. This research also demonstrates that loyalty to the salesperson has a diminished effect on both outcomes when the merchandise is perceived as being high quality. The findings suggest that managers need to be aware of potential contingency factors that may affect relationships within the service profit chain. Moreover, the results reveal that consumers make holistic evaluations of services and consider both the physical …
