Millennials Managed: How Millennials Perceive And Value Implicit Leadership Traits, Timothy P. Miller
Millennials Managed: How Millennials Perceive And Value Implicit Leadership Traits, Timothy P. Miller
Honors College Theses
This project focuses on how Millennials (born between the early 1980s and early 2000s) perceive and value the implicit leadership traits of managers in today’s business environment. The goal is to show that millennials perceive several implicit leadership traits such as Relationship-Oriented Leadership, Trust, Knowledge Demonstration, and Individualism as favorable while perceiving Justice Orientation and Confrontation as traits that bear negative consequences for job effectiveness and satisfaction. The research was done by distributing a survey to the National Millennials Community, a national organization comprised of over 200 members that span across the entire country, as well as a Georgia Southern …
Marginalized To Mainstream: A Study Into Emerging Industry Under Stigma, Brandon K. Lee
Marginalized To Mainstream: A Study Into Emerging Industry Under Stigma, Brandon K. Lee
Honors College Theses
This explorative study attempts to identify norms and practices of new businesses within the emerging industry of recreational cannabis retailers; specifically in the context of their entrepreneurial characteristics, start-up behaviors, and firm behaviors and strategies (Duchesneau & Gartner, 1990). Due to the nature of emerging industries, there are many opportunities for firms to create a successful position in a new market. However, firms in emerging industries face an innate “liability of newness”, increasing the challenge and risk of new venture creation (Stinchcombe, 1965). This risk and stigma is increased when the industry lacks legitimacy in the eyes of consumers and …

Community Sport Service Provision, Resident Satisfaction, And Participation, Liangjun Zhou, Xiaoying Chen, Beth A. Cianfrone, Jerred Junqi Wang, Nathan David Pifer, James J. Zhang
AMTP Proceedings 2017
Advocating for the “gold medal strategy”, China has made great advancements in elite sports; however, the significant achievement in elite sports has not translated into the development of mass sport participations. To form a stronger foundation of a sport pyramid, more attention should be directed to community sports and promoting healthy lifestyles. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of community sport service provisions on participants’ satisfaction and in turn on their sport participation behavior. In the current study, the public sport service in community includes sport facilities, sport organizations, sport programs, fitness test, and volunteer services …

Advancing Customer Experience Theory: Five-Way Conversations In Two-Person Customer-Marketer Talk, Carol M. Megehee, Arch G. Woodside
AMTP Proceedings 2017
This study advances customer experience theory (CET) by configuring research on talk, storytelling, customer-marketer interactions, and customer assessments of experiences in encounters with sales and hospitality/service representatives. Customers’ introspections and assessments of their meetings with marketers constitutes one genre of storytelling that include not only surface talk between two persons but surface and subsurface (nonconscious) talk between persons and within self. Practical implications include creative storytelling scripts for performing in sales and service training programs in firms and classroom contexts. Given the centrality of face-to-face meetings in many consumer shopping contexts (e.g., cars, houses, medical services; campus visits by high …

An Assessment Of Engagement, Self-Pacing And Learning In A Flipped Marketing Classroom: An Exploratory Study, James R. Shock, Jill K. Maher
AMTP Proceedings 2017
This study examines the possible impact of engagement and self-pacing on student learning in a flipped classroom environment. Survey responses from 33 students were used in this exploratory study. Results indicate that engagement and self-pacing showed significance, impacting self-reported learning. This preliminary study suggests a flipped classroom improves student learning in marketing. It is expected that a larger sample size with improved measures will uncover other relationships within the flipped classroom model.
Marketing & Business Strategy: A Relationship Opportunity In Curricula, Jon M. Martin
Marketing & Business Strategy: A Relationship Opportunity In Curricula, Jon M. Martin
AMTP Proceedings 2017
Business schools and administration curriculum delivery often fail to recognize and leverage the relationship between Marketing Strategy and overall Business Strategy courses regarding course overlap/merger, course scheduling, and/or instruction. Since it is becoming increasingly difficult to find and realize curriculum improvements that well engage students in the wake of scheduling conflicts and enrollment/matriculation challenges, Pfeiffer MHA is, and urges other academic programs to consider as well, embracing the standardization required to leverage these two course subjects in order to realize the academic synergy between them for our students.

Assessment Of Oral Presentations In An Undergraduate Accounting Program: An Application Of Videotapes, Role Plays And Student Involvement, Leslie B. Fletcher, Linda G. Mullen, Gloria J. Stuart
AMTP Proceedings 2017
The subject School of Accountancy assesses oral presentations at the undergraduate (Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting) level to accomplish program improvement and accreditation maintenance. Historically, accounting students were assessed on their oral presentation skills by giving a 3-4 minute presentation of a completed research paper and used presentation software. Accounting faculty members assessed the presentation using a six-factor four-level rubric.
This work was motivated by feedback received from the School’s Accounting Advisory Board; the members were dissatisfied with new accounting staff hires’ inability to communicate with their clients face-to-face. While they appreciated the favorable results achieved in the oral …
Consuming Digital Technologies And Enacting Identities: Mothers In Mundane Daily Life, Meera Venkatraman
Consuming Digital Technologies And Enacting Identities: Mothers In Mundane Daily Life, Meera Venkatraman
AMTP Proceedings 2017
This manuscript examines mothers’ consumption of digital technologies to enact their individual, relational, and familial identities. Using phemenological interviews it finds mothers purposefully consume digital technologies to negotiate, construct, and enact identities. Specifically, mothers use a repertoire of four appropriation strategies: mastering, partnering, domesticating, and avoiding. Mastery is a multi-year project in which mothers enroll in digital educational programs, qualify, and create new professional identities. In domestication, mothers assert themselves on technology managing their inclusion/exclusion in the time and spaces of family life, thereby enacting parental identities. In contrast, partnering is collaborative; mothers consume those functionalities of technologies that help …

Segmentation Of The Aruban Tourism Market: Classification Of Visitors’ On-Island Activities, Deborah J.C. Brosdahl, Roasalind C. Paige
AMTP Proceedings 2017
Travel and tourism offices in destinations throughout the world are keenly aware of the importance of attracting visitors to their locale. This is especially true in places where tourism is an important component of the local economy. Nowhere is tourism more important than for the island nations of the Caribbean, an area that has been called one of the most tourism dependent regions in the world. With approximately 1.22 million people visiting each year, the Caribbean island of Aruba “The World Tourism Council (WTTC) reports Aruba’s GDP is more reliant on travel and tourism than any other nation, relative to …

Examining And Exposing The Darknet, Ton H. Don
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This thesis consists of two studies; the first study is “Diving into the Darknet” and the second is “Exposing the Darknet on Mobile Devices”. The Darknet is a network of hidden sites and services which are built based on anonymity. In “Diving into the Darknet”, we applied different data science methods to establish the relationships between the data in the data set. This data set has information related to seller, drug types, and transactions. Additionally, we used Tableau to visualize the data set. For the second study, we took a digital forensics perspective of the Darknet. Orfox and Orbot, a …

Investigating The Effects That Alcohol Consumption Has On The Impulse Buying Behaviors Of College Students, Christian J. Kerrigan
Honors College Theses
This paper looks at the relationships between alcohol consumption and the impulse buying behaviors of college students. The first section of the study looks at what categories of products are most commonly purchased whilst each student is under the influence of alcohol. The criteria for classing something as an impulse purchase in this section is that you can’t have previously planned on buying the product, and/or you end up spending more than you initially intended, whilst you are under the influence. We found that food, more alcohol, and gifts for others were the top three categories in this section. The …

A Human Resource Approach To Improving An Alternative Break Experience, Mikaela Shupp, Luther T. Denton, Katy Kaesebier
Honors College Theses
Alternative breaks are intensive service experiences that allow students to address social issues while impacting the communities they serve. This thesis examines Georgia Southern University’s Alternative Break Program in depth, specifically the participant selection process. Seven alternative break coordinators of programs across the United States were interviewed in order to evaluate the various participant selection processes used and to determine the main characteristics that these programs seek in participants and site leaders. Through this analysis, it was determined that programs look for site leaders who are flexible, passionate, and responsible. The research also revealed that coordinators look for participants who …

A Scalable Algorithm For Locating Distribution Centers On Real Road Networks, Saeed Ghanbartehrani, Jose D. Porter
A Scalable Algorithm For Locating Distribution Centers On Real Road Networks, Saeed Ghanbartehrani, Jose D. Porter
14th IMHRC Proceedings (Karlsruhe, Germany – 2016)
The median problem is a type of network location problem that aims at finding a node with the total minimum demand weighted distance to a set of demand nodes in a weighted graph. In this research, an algorithm for solving the median problem on real road networks is proposed. The proposed algorithm, referred to as the multi-threaded Dijkstra’s (MTD) algorithm, is then used to optimally locate Wal-Mart distribution centers on the 28-million node road network of the United States with the objective of minimizing the total demand weighted transportation cost. The resulting optimal location configuration of Wal-Mart distribution centers improves …
Evaluating Transaction Pairing Strategies For Vehicle-Based High-Density Storage Systems, Debjit Roy, Harit Joshie
Evaluating Transaction Pairing Strategies For Vehicle-Based High-Density Storage Systems, Debjit Roy, Harit Joshie
14th IMHRC Proceedings (Karlsruhe, Germany – 2016)
Vehicle-based storage and retrieval systems present an attractive choice for distribution center automation because it provides the flexibility in managing demand fluctuations without affecting transaction throughput times. In this research, we contend that while dual-command cycles can reduce the vehicle travel times for processing transactions, it may not be the best policy for reducing transaction throughput times when transactions arrive at random time instants. We develop stochastic models to test the transaction throughput time performance with multiple pairing strategies and present operational insights.
