Australia’S Rare Earths Lie Between Economic Security And Liberal Markets, Naoise Mcdonagh
Australia’S Rare Earths Lie Between Economic Security And Liberal Markets, Naoise Mcdonagh
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
China’s dominance over the global supply of processed critical minerals and rare earth elements is well documented, as is its willingness to use such dominance for geopolitical leverage. Beijing has applied export controls to restrict supply on numerous occasions. Recent examples include new restrictions applied to gallium and germanium in 2023, antimony in 2024, and seven rare earths in 2025. This has constrained global supply and elevated spot prices of these metals that serve as critical inputs to advanced industry. The frequency of restrictions is growing, as geoeconomic competition heats up and Beijing turns its mineral dominance into a key …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Research Question/Issue: Scholars and practitioners view boardroom dissent as central to the functioning of boards of directors. However, there is a lack of consensus on what dissent is, who is involved, when and where it happens, and whether it is a behavioral or cognitive phenomenon. This conceptual unclarity and related fragmentation of empirical results call for an integrative literature review to build a coherent agenda for future research. Research Findings/Results: A content-analysis of 73 articles published between 1997 and 2023 reveals three distinct research clusters that explore the empirical phenomenon: (1) dissent as expressed through voting, (2) dissent as diverging …

Examining Love As A Central Ethic Of Leadership: A Kierkegaardian And Feminist Reading, Edward Wray-Bliss, Irene E. De Pater
Examining Love As A Central Ethic Of Leadership: A Kierkegaardian And Feminist Reading, Edward Wray-Bliss, Irene E. De Pater
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This paper examines love as a concept for advancing our understanding of the ethics of leadership. We draw upon writings that consider love to be at the heart of modern subjects’ search for meaning and affective attachment to organisation – necessitating, we argue, an exploration of leadership too in these terms. Existing works on leaders’ supposed love for those they lead are considered. These serve as a springboard from which to undertake a philosophical examination of two dominant formulations of an ethics of love in Western culture: neighbour and agapeic love. Neither of these conceptualisations, we argue, suffice as an …
Us-China Competition, World Order And Economic Decoupling: Insights From Cultural Realism, Naoise Mcdonagh
Us-China Competition, World Order And Economic Decoupling: Insights From Cultural Realism, Naoise Mcdonagh
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This study examines how US-China geopolitical rivalry is reshaping global economic order. It identifies gaps in existing research on hegemonic state behaviour and presents an alternative theory based on cultural realism. This latter builds on realism by arguing that political culture influences the intensity of geopolitical tensions. Drawing on domestic political discourse, this study demonstrates that US and China geopolitical tensions are driven by conflicting national political cultures that generate competing visions of global order, reducing the capacity of international institutions to sustain cooperation. This divergence manifest in geoeconomic competition and weaking multilateralism. Theoretical expectations suggest an emerging geoeconomic world …

Laissez-Faire Leadership, Red Tape And The Meaningful Work Paradox, Abid Hussain, Esme Franken
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
While meaningful work is widely recognised as a driver of job satisfaction, the role of leadership style and bureaucratic constraints in shaping this relationship remains underexplored. This study addresses this gap by investigating how laissez-faire leadership and red tape moderate the meaningful work–job satisfaction relationship among Australian public sector employees (N = 277). The findings reveal that laissez-faire leadership strengthens this relationship, suggesting that the autonomy it provides enhances the benefits of meaningful work, contrary to its traditionally negative portrayal. In contrast, red tape significantly weakens the relationship, highlighting the adverse effects of bureaucratic inefficiencies. These results confirm that meaningful …
