JOHNSON CITY – The main project in one of Kamyl Harvey-Bogan’s classes at East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine transformed into an opportunity for the fourth-year medical student to raise awareness about racial disparities in health care and bring attention to ways in which future physicians can overcome them.
Last summer, Harvey-Bogan took an elective course that taught the students how to build medical simulation cases for medical education. Two student pharmacists at Gatton College of Pharmacy have earned the Mitch and Barbara Cox Pharmacy Scholarship, one of the college’s most prestigious awards. The scholarships provide $10,000 to each student and includes mentoring with the scholarship founders, Mitch and Barbara Cox.
Mitch, who has managed a successful business for more than 40 years, and Barbara, who is a former biology teacher, have supported the college since its founding and in recent years created the scholarship.
This year, recipients of the Cox Scholarship are Jonathan Holan (’23), of Morristown, and Tabitha Sineath (’24), of Spring, Texas.

She earned her Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Toledo, majoring in pharmacology and toxicology with a chemistry minor. JOHNSON CITY – Jeffery Blanton, who has served in various leadership roles for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), has joined East Tennessee State University as Assistant Vice President for Administration and Director of Emergency Management.
Blanton has more than 30 years of law enforcement experience at the local and federal levels. Most recently, he was the supervisory senior resident agent for the Johnson City office of the Knoxville Division of the FBI where he led a team of 30 agents, task force members and support staff and was responsible for all FBI investigations in upper East Tennessee.

In the 12 months to follow, the university would host open tryout sessions for its new Overwatch and League of Legends teams. Renovations for a new esports arena and a 32-foot video display wall would be completed. A new head coach would be hired. The team jerseys would be unveiled.

JOHNSON CITY (Dec. 18, 2020) – East Tennessee State University’s Office of Professional Development will offer its three-month Pharmacy Technician Certification Training Course starting Feb. 2.
The class, which is limited to 13 in-person students and also offers a remote option, will train participants to assist pharmacists in handling medications and serving patients. Those who pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) examination become nationally certified.
The course instructor is Cheryl Ollry, a pharmacy technician at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Ollry has over 15 years of experience in retail and hospital pharmacy.

JOHNSON CITY (Dec. 18, 2020) – The Women’s Studies Program at East Tennessee State University will host a two-day institute in January 2021 about infusing trauma-informed care principles into strategies for teaching and learning.
Dr. Phyllis Thompson, director of the Women’s Studies Program and associate professor in the Department of Literature and Language, is co-organizing the institute with members of the Women’s Studies Steering Committee. JOHNSON CITY (Dec. 14, 2020) – The ETSU Health COVID-19 community collection site that delivers PCR molecular test results in 24 hours is moving to a new location at the East Tennessee State University Parking Garage, located at the corner of State of Franklin Road and Jack Vest Drive.
Beginning Monday, Dec. 14, the COVID-19 collection site will become a drive-through testing site, operating on the second floor of the parking garage. Pre-registration through the ETSU Health website (www.etsuhealth.org) is required for tests.

JOHNSON CITY – (Dec. 14, 2020) Ai Ishida, a doctoral candidate in the sport physiology and sport performance program in East Tennessee State University’s Clemmer College, is the recipient of the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s (NSCA) Minority Scholarship for 2020.
The $2,000 scholarship is designed to encourage minorities to enter the field of strength and conditioning.

JOHNSON CITY – (Dec. 8, 2020) Following a national search, Dr. Janna Scarborough has been named dean of the Clemmer College at East Tennessee State University.
Scarborough joined the ETSU faculty in 2006 and has served as interim dean for the past 20 months. For six years, she served as chair of the Department of Counseling and Human Services and also held an associate dean appointment in the Clemmer College before assuming the interim deanship in March 2019.
