Motivational interviewing is a communication method that assists an individual’s internal motivation to make a change (Miller & Rollnick, 2002). Motivational interviewing has been incorporated in many health care fields and professions (Anstiss, 2009), but has not been fully embraced in the field of Recreational Therapy. The purpose of this project was to explore possible applications and benefits of motivational interviewing in the practice of recreational therapy.

In recent years, companies have increasingly released financial performance numbers in addition to those required under generally accepted accounting principles (“GAAP”). These adjusted, or pro-forma earnings, have been a way for management to report earnings without extraordinary, one-time, or other items. Previous research suggests that management may use these pro-forma numbers to meet benchmarks such as analysts’ expectations when GAAP measurements fall short of these expectations.1 In addition, there are companies which – due to misstatements resulting from accounting errors or even fraud – are required to restate their earnings. In order to make optimal portfolio choices, individuals, firms and portfolio managers are interested in the probabilities attached to their receiving various returns in the stock market. These probabilities of returns on securities are described by statistical functions called return distributions. However, much uncertainty concerning such return distributions exists and over the years many models have been created that attempt to predict the mean and variance of return distributions, and recently some have even been put forth that attempt to predict the skewness of such distributions. Substantial friction exists in markets when sharing new innovation or realizing the gains that arise from innovation. This friction may create suboptimal outcomes for broader society because it can lead to situations in which the best innovations are not widely shared. For example, it is well-known that large, well-resourced technology firms often patent far beyond their target product markets in efforts to stave off competition from new or upstart entrants. Employers seek to enhance employee dedication and increase company productivity while controlling operating costs; hence, companies have recently been investing more in human resource (HR) programs and recognition practices. The honors thesis I recently completed at Brigham Young University sought to augment practioners’ and academicians’ knowledge about HR programs and recognition practices by evaluating their respective effects on employee attitudes. This report will review the methods and findings of my project, as well as explain how I used the ORCA Grant to achieve my goals.

An Empirical Analysis Of Healthcare Ipos And Seos, Jonathan Holloway, Dr. James C. Brau

Overall, three phenomena exist in corporate equity issuances. These phenomena include hotissue markets, first-day underpricing, and poor long-run performance. Hot-issue markets refer to fluctuation in the volume of issuances. Hot waves are periods of high issuance volume, and cold waves are periods of low volume. The second phenomenon, first-day underpricing, results in the initial price of equity beginning lower than its first-day closing price. The third phenomenon, poor long-run performance, refers to the tendency of issuances to underperform during a period beginning the day after the issuance and ranging from one to five years.

The grant I received has helped me write an honors thesis entitled, “The Effects of Inflation on Businesses in Brazil.” For many years now, Brazil has been plagued with high levels of inflation. Although small amounts of inflation can help an economy grow, inflation in Brazil has often exceeded such small amounts. Now, a new economic plan has been introduced which has cut inflation dramatically. My honors thesis focused on the effects of the constantly changing economic environment on businesses within Brazil.

My ORCA project is primarily focused on organizational learning. I am working closely with Peter Madsen, my mentor, to gather data and find supporting literature. Our hypothesis is that strategic focus will increase the rate at which organizations learn. In a nuclear power plant, this can be measured by the number of delays for maintenance that occur in a plant. We hypothesize that organizations that operate in a narrowly defined domain will learn faster than other companies in that domain, even if they have the same level of aggregate experience. Investors, economists and financial analysts are constantly seeking to develop models that may help them learn what the stock market will do and how it functions. They do this so that they may take advantage of any market anomalies as soon as they appear and try to make “easy money.” Various pricing models (see Sharpe (1964), Litner (1965) and Fama and French (1993) for example1) have been and continue to be constructed that try to predict returns, and variables suspected to be correlated with returns have been included in these models in an attempt to determine specific predictors of returns.

Nonprofit organizations (NPOs) face a tradeoff between activities which further their mission and those which generate revenue to pay salaries and bills. For many NPOs, management’s increasing attention to cash flow suppresses the organization’s service-oriented mission and alienates staff. This ORCA grant funded a case study of this phenomenon at RSEF, a small development NPO in South Africa. I use organizational identity theory to explore ways in which a loss of mission focus affects how staff identify with their work, and how decreased identification impacts the organization’s ability to serve society. These difficulties arise through a divergence in how the end user envisions the system should operate and how the analyst or developer perceives the user would like the system to operate.
