Cattle, Land, People, And Accountability Systems: The Makings Of A Values-Based Organisation, Jesse Dillard, Madeleine Pullman

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

An in-depth case study of a natural beef cooperative describes a management information and accountability system (MIAS) that emerged from, and facilitates the nurturing of, a values-based organisation’s core values. Sustaining the family ranching culture and community represents the core value upon which the values-based agricultural coop is founded. Responsible people, land and animal management are central elements in sustainable ranching operations. The MIAS is designed to support the social and environmental objectives as well as to maintain the economic viability of the ranchers that make up this social enterprise. The MIAS is the key to linking organisational core values, …

Culture Impact On Perceptions Of Communication Effectiveness, James M. Barry, Sandra S. Graã§A Jan 2017

Culture Impact On Perceptions Of Communication Effectiveness, James M. Barry, Sandra S. Graã§A

HCBE Faculty Articles

Early research on relationship marketing highlights the role of communication in shaping trusted and committed business partnerships. Various studies validate communication as one of the strongest determinants of relationship commitment, loyalty, trust and satisfaction. But, few have studied the predictors of communication effectiveness, especially in a global context. The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of cooperation, quality communication, conflict handling and two-way communication as predictors of communication effectiveness. The perception of their impact on increasing communication effectiveness is tested in the context of buyer-supplier relationship in one high-context/relationship-based country (Brazil) and one low-context/rule-based country (U.S.). Structural …

Restaurant Liability For Contaminated Food And Beverages Pursuant To Negligence, Warranty, And Strict Liability Laws, Frank J. Cavico, Bahaudin G. Mujtaba, Stephen C. Muffler, Marissa Samuel, Nicolas-Michel Polito

HCBE Faculty Articles

Managers, owners and employees of all food providers must make sure that their products are safe, wholesome, and unadulterated prior to selling them. They must all be experts in making, storing, selling, preparing, and serving food. Otherwise, they could hurt consumers and face lawsuits since foodborne illnesses are a serious problem in the United States and around the world. Each year, about 48 million people in the United States suffer from foodborne illnesses that are linked to Salmonella, Norovirus, Listeria, and E. coli. This article examines three legal liability theories of negligence, warranty, and strict liability that are linked to …

Cash Flow Training And Improved Microfinance Outcomes, Marc J. Epstein, Kristi Yuthas Jan 2017

Cash Flow Training And Improved Microfinance Outcomes, Marc J. Epstein, Kristi Yuthas

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

Despite its promise as a powerful tool for alleviating poverty, research suggests that microfinance has had only a modest impact on development. Misallocation of funds by clients has been implicated as a major impediment to microfinance success. In this study, clients received training on how to track (but not manage) their cash flows during the first two meetings of the microfinance loan cycle. Examination of weekly cash flow shows that clients immediately invested the majority of their funds into the businesses and carefully managed revenues and expenditures to maintain sufficient food and other household expenditures throughout the loan cycle. It …

Why Do Smes Go Green? An Analysis Of Wine Firms In South Africa, Ralph Hamann, James Smith, Peter Tashman, R. Scott Marshall Jan 2017

Why Do Smes Go Green? An Analysis Of Wine Firms In South Africa, Ralph Hamann, James Smith, Peter Tashman, R. Scott Marshall

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

Studies on why small and medium enterprises (SMEs) engage in pro-environmental behavior suggest that managers’ environmental responsibility plays a relatively greater role than competitiveness and legitimacy-seeking. These categories of drivers are mostly considered independent of each other. Using survey data and comparative case studies of wine firms in South Africa, this study finds that managers’ environmental responsibility is indeed the key driver in a context where state regulation hardly plays any role in regulating dispersed, rural firms. However, especially proactive firms are also characterized by expectations of competitiveness gains. The authors thus emphasize the role of institutional context and potential …

Managing Risk And Uncertainty In Supply Chains In The Face Of The Current Global Realities, Gurkan Ibrahim Akalin Jan 2016

Managing Risk And Uncertainty In Supply Chains In The Face Of The Current Global Realities, Gurkan Ibrahim Akalin

Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations - Archive

For the last two decades, there has been an increasing academic and practitioner interest in understanding uncertainty and risks, identifying their sources, and managing, reducing and mitigating them in supply chains (SCs). Many sources of risk are already identified and grouped, and some good methods to reduce or cope with them have been described as well. However, literature has not been profound yet. Indeed, certain types of risk sources lack practical definitions and/or effective management techniques (Prater, 2005; Simangunsong et al., 2012). The financial crises of national economies in the late 2000s followed by a global recession (2008-2012) have escalated …

Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)

Delays in obtaining development approvals have been advanced as a major reason for shortages if not also increase in cost of housing. This paper is the first systematic attempt to examine whether the apparently long period of time taken to obtaining statutory planning permissions by developers for major development projects under Comprehensive Development Area (CDA) zoning is due to Town Planning Board rejections or developers’ strategy to hoard land or improve building design. Publicly available Town Planning Board data obtained from the Planning Department, property transaction records kept by the Land Registry, property market statistics released by the Rating and …

Desire For Experiential Travel, Avoidance Of Rituality And Social Esteem: An Empirical Study Of Consumer Response To Tourism Innovation, Winnie Wing Yin Chan, Chester K.M. To, Alice Wai Ching Chu

Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)

This study investigates tourist consumption responses toward tourism innovation. To measure tourist responses, this study posits three key consumption drivers, namely social esteem, desire for experiential travel, and avoidance against rituality of tourism settings (a subscale of need for uniqueness) and models consumers’ affective response within the context of tourism innovation. It involves 295 respondents in an empirical survey. The findings affirm the three drivers toward tourist consumption behavior. Avoidance of rituality reflects tourist preference toward tourism product and service innovation. Desire for experiential travel and the pursuit of social esteem signify tourism management and marketing innovation. Social esteem, need …

Moderating Effects Of Institutional Logics On Strategic Response To Coercive Institutional Change, Leon Paul Weeks Dec 2015

Moderating Effects Of Institutional Logics On Strategic Response To Coercive Institutional Change, Leon Paul Weeks

Business Administration Dissertations - Archive

Using institutional theory, the study examines the relationship between compliance behaviors and attitudes of small business owners and managers toward external coercive institutional change pressures. Organizations can experience conflicting institutional pressures (Pache & Santos, 2010). Variation in change pressures suggest heterogeneous impacts from institutional demands for change (e.g. Herremans, Herschovis, & Bertels, 2009). This study traces Internal Revenue Service regulatory, normative and cognitive-cultural changes targeting the tax preparation industry and examines the relationship between owner/managers attitudes about the changes and their compliance behaviors. Additionally this study traces the historical development of commercial and professional institutional logics in tax preparation and …

Data Visualization In Exploratory Data Analysis: An Overview Of Methods And Technologies, Yingsen Mao Dec 2015

Data Visualization In Exploratory Data Analysis: An Overview Of Methods And Technologies, Yingsen Mao

Business Administration Theses - Archive

Exploratory data analysis (EDA) refers to an iterative process through which analysts constantly ‘ask questions’ and extract knowledge from data. EDA is becoming more and more important for modern data analysis, such as business analytics and business intelligence, as it greatly relaxes the statistical assumption required by its counterpart—confirmation data analysis (CDA), and involves analysts directly in the data mining process. However, exploratory visual analysis, as the central part of EDA, requires heavy data manipulations and tedious visual specifications, which might impede the EDA process if the analyst has no guidelines to follow. In this paper, we present a framework …

When The Due Date Is Not The “Do” Date!, Theresa M. Mastrianni

Publications and Research

Our students consistently hand in assignments late, or complete them at the last minute. Why is it that they know about assignments all term long yet only begin them the night before the assignment is due? Based on a career-focused learning community at Kingsborough Community College of the City University of New York, this article looks at ways to help our “millennial” students develop better time management skills. It shows how time management and prioritizing can be introduced as a tool for success in college and life and offers suggestions to better engage students in getting assignments done in a …

Professional Identity And You: Why Self-Concept Matters In Librarianship, Kevin Tanner Nov 2015

Professional Identity And You: Why Self-Concept Matters In Librarianship, Kevin Tanner

FIMS Presentations

Kevin Tanner addresses the importance of professional identity in librarianship. In the Summer 2015 semester, he completed an independent study on the construction of professional identity of librarians on Twitter through professional development and networking. During this session, he shares the results of that study and give suggestions on how you can begin to find your own professional identity while still retaining your individuality. While there are many stereotypes about librarians, they are not “one-size-fits-all” professionals, and a new modern image of the professional has begun to emerge in the digital age through a thoughtful reflection on identity.

Perceptions Of African American Police Officers On Racial Profiling In Small Agencies, Charles P. Wilson, Shirley A. Wilson, Malane Thou

Management Department Faculty Journal Articles

Most assessments of the impact and effects of biased-based policing have been reviewed from the aspect of officer-citizen interaction during traffic stops, with the majority of studies focusing on these occurrences in larger police jurisdictions. Yet police officers themselves, and particularly African American officers, bring a completely different perspective to this issue that has not been fully considered or developed, especially where it concerns the smaller agencies that make up the bulk of the nation’s police community. This study considers the perceptions of African American police officers regarding the presence and impact of biased-based policing in their agencies, as well …

Personal Interpersonal Competence Assessment: A Self-Report Instrument For Student Development, Craig R. Seal, Krystal Miguel, Abdulaziz Alzamil, Stefanie E. Naumann, Joanna Royce-Davis, Donald Drost

Eberhardt School of Business Faculty Articles

The purpose of this paper is to assess the internal consistency of a revised instrument, the Personal-Interpersonal Competence Assessment (PICA); derived from the earlier Social Emotional Development Instrument (SED-I). There were three primary rationales for the revision. First, and most importantly, to better align the operational factors with the conceptual definitions. Second, was to clearly position the construct within the broader context of personal and interpersonal competence, rather than the emotional intelligence literature. Third, to provide a developmental, rather than a diagnostic assessment for personal-interpersonal competence. As with the earlier SED-I model and measure, the intent of the research is …

Materialistic Consumers Who Seek Unique Products: How Does Their Need For Status And Their Affective Response Facilitate The Repurchase Intention Of Luxury Goods?”, Winnie Wing Yin Chan, Chester K.M. To, Alice Wai Ching Chu Jan 2015

Materialistic Consumers Who Seek Unique Products: How Does Their Need For Status And Their Affective Response Facilitate The Repurchase Intention Of Luxury Goods?”, Winnie Wing Yin Chan, Chester K.M. To, Alice Wai Ching Chu

Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)

It is generally known that status consumption fulfils the hedonic needs of luxury goods consumers; affective response generated from the purchase behavior of luxury goods is linked to the display of wealth and symbolic meanings obtained from social standing. However, there is a paucity of studies on how the affective response of consumers influences their repurchase intention of luxury goods. Therefore, in this paper, the repurchase intention of luxury goods consumers is investigated, their motivations are examined, and how status consumption affects their affective response will be demonstrated. The sample in this study comprises 568 survey respondents. The findings show …

An Analysis Of The Interplay Between Goal Orientation And Ethical Leadership And The Theoretical Processes Through Which Ethical Leadership Influences Work Outcomes, Dennis John Marquardt Jan 2015

An Analysis Of The Interplay Between Goal Orientation And Ethical Leadership And The Theoretical Processes Through Which Ethical Leadership Influences Work Outcomes, Dennis John Marquardt

Business Administration Dissertations - Archive

Due to recent heightened public awareness of ethics and ethical scandals inbusiness, the ethical leadership construct has become increasingly popular. However, scholars still know little about the predictors of ethical leadership and the specific processes through which ethical leaders influence their followers. Across three different papers, I contribute to the literature by addressing these gaps. The first paper consists of a theoretical review of goal orientation and ethical leadership with specific focus on the interplay between the two constructs. In the second paper I use latent path analysis with a sample of 234 supervisor/subordinate dyads and find leader trait-avoid goal …

Disruption Of Information Technology Projects: The Reactive Decoupling Of Project Management Methodologies, Kurt W. Schmitz Mar 2014

Disruption Of Information Technology Projects: The Reactive Decoupling Of Project Management Methodologies, Kurt W. Schmitz

Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations - Archive

Information Technology projects have migrated toward two dominant Project Management (PM) methodologies. Plan-driven practices provide organizational control through highly structured plans, schedules, and specifications that facilitate oversight by hierarchical bureaucracies. In contrast, agile practices emphasize empowered teams using flexible methods aligned to organizational values reinforced by cultural controls and rituals. While project teams mix and combine practices from both traditions, a stylistic bias remains in the initial project management practices established at the onset of IT projects. A review of existing literature on IT project management serve as a filter on the stylistic biases of these dominant PM paradigms that …

Matching Inventory Replenishment Heuristics To Demand Patterns: A Cost/Benefit Approach, Randall A. Napier Mar 2014

Matching Inventory Replenishment Heuristics To Demand Patterns: A Cost/Benefit Approach, Randall A. Napier

Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations - Archive

Behavioral research indicates that bounded rationality and resource constraints support the use of "fast and frugal heuristics" that intentionally exclude some available information from decision models. Inventory replenishment decisions must be made quickly and efficiently, and as such are a promising realm for the use of fast and frugal heuristics. This research includes a simulation study to identify significant relationships among heuristics and demand patterns, yielding inferences regarding the advantages of selecting replenishment models to match demand patterns. Findings from the simulation are validated against three years of actual usage data for 278 independent demand items from a single industrial …

Generational Cohort Differences In Types Of Organizational Commitment Among Nurses In Alabama, April Lavette Jones Jan 2014

Generational Cohort Differences In Types Of Organizational Commitment Among Nurses In Alabama, April Lavette Jones

Presidential Alumni Research Dissemination Award

In hospitals in the United States, the ratio of nurses to patients is declining, resulting in an increase in work demands for nurses. Consequently, organizations face challenges with nurses' organizational commitment. Studies have revealed generational differences, as determined by birth year, in employee levels of organizational commitment in a number of organizational settings. However, there is a gap in the literature regarding the impact of generational cohorts on the organizational commitment of nurses. The purpose of this quantitative, nonexperimental, cross-sectional design was to address whether generational cohorts of nurses differed in their levels of organizational commitment, and to investigate whether …

Behavioural Determinants That Drive Luxury Goods Consumption: A Study Within The Tourist Context, Winnie Wing Yin Chan, Chester K.M. To, Alice Wai Ching Chu, Zhiming Zhang Jan 2014

Behavioural Determinants That Drive Luxury Goods Consumption: A Study Within The Tourist Context, Winnie Wing Yin Chan, Chester K.M. To, Alice Wai Ching Chu, Zhiming Zhang

Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)

Chinese tourists have become the greatest driving force behind global tourism. An increasing number of luxury fashion brands regard these tourists as a potentially significant segment of status-conscious consumers. Yet a limited number of marketing studies have addressed the significance of the intrinsic motivation that drives these tourist consumers to consume luxury goods. This study investigates the significant intrinsic factors that affect the luxury goods buying behavior of tourist consumers. Data are collected from 284 tourist consumers and analyzed by using the exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and cluster analysis. The EFA purified the measurement instruments to four factor attributes, namely, …

Criminal Background Checks In The American Employment Process, Frank J. Cavico, Bahaudin G. Mujtaba, Stephen C. Muffler

HCBE Faculty Articles

This article examines the important and controversial topic of criminal background checks in employment. The topic of criminal background checks in employment is indeed an important as well as controversial and difficult one in the world of business today, as this hiring practice addresses core values in society. Yet these values can conflict. One societal value is the belief that if a criminal ex-offender has paid his or her “debt to society’; then opportunities, such as employment, should be made available to such a person, just like everyone else. Business owners and managers today, however, are concerned about having an …
