Home And Away: The Tourist, The Flâneur And Everyday Life, John S. Gates
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This thesis examines the role and status of the tourist in the present day. It argues that the tourist, and the touristic experience, is emblematic of the consumption-based economy of late capitalism. It analyses tourism as a practice of, rather than opposed to, everyday life, for many subjects in late-capitalist Western society. The argument is developed by comparing and contrasting the tourist with the flâneur. The flâneur is regarded as a representative subjectivity of early modernity who developed visual and spatial practices, methodologies of movement and observation, which interpreted the city. The tourist's relationship with the global spaces of the …

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have become influential development actors in the developing world over the last two decades and are becoming increasingly involved in “sustainable” activities. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis was to address this shortcoming in the development literature by undertaking a comprehensive study that analyzed the role of NGOs in the tourism sector in Belize. The research utilized a qualitative approach and employed descriptive survey techniques along with an extensive …

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)
The impetus behind this project stems from an incident in February 1998 when several "gay" cruises originating from Europe and the U.S. were refused docking privileges in various parts of the Caribbean, invoking responses from British Prime Minister Tony Blair and U.S. officials, both insisting on the egregious violation of human rights. The on-going dilemma over the docking of gay cruise ships led me to ask questions about the constructions of community created through and against such encounters and the production of a global gay identity that is contested by postcolonial situations. Ironically, the U.S. and British states advocate protection …
