Business economists attempting to determine and to describe the changes in the business activity of metropolitan areas and other geographic sections are seriously limited in their work by the absence of a satisfactory Overall Business Activity Index (OBAI). Although there are several methods for constructing such a composite index, this thesis examines the application of factor analysis to the construction of an OBAI. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Bank management is constantly faced with the task of maximizing asset profitability within the constraints of liquidity and safety. In an attempt to aid management in the solution of this problem, several asset management models and theories have been developed. One such model was developed by D. Chambers and A. Charnes and was presented in the July, 1961 issue of Management Science. This model utilizes a linear programming approach to determine an optimal asset portfolio which maximizes profits while satisfying a bank's liquidity and safety needs. This paper examines entrance barriers to the ready-to-eat breakfast cereal industry in the United States. Research studies and primary data are examined for the purpose of demonstrating the existing product-market synergy differential between industry participants and potential entrants to this market. This synergy differential is then examined in relation to the perceived risk associated with a breakfast cereal product investment, when viewed by a potential entrant vis-a-vis an industry participant. Explanatory models are formulated and developed which describe the relationship between the rate of return on investment and the risk/uncertainty inherent in the cereal industry.

The purpose of this research project was to test the effects of a crisis situation upon employee need expression. Two hypotheses were tested. The first stated that a group of employees experiencing a crisis would have needs lower in the need-structure, as theorized by Abraham Maslow, than would a group of employees not in a crisis situation. The second hypothesis stated that the group of employees in crisis would exhibit depressed future expectations as compared to the group of noncrisis employees.
