While new ways of organizing exchange have become prominent in business-to-business markets, the function of corporate minority supplier purchasing programs in this changing organizational environment has received scant attention. Specifically, the extent to which the present structure of minority supplier purchasing programs enhances -- or deters -- the creation of strategic partnerships, impacts the way buyers and suppliers interact, and ultimately determines the efficacy of these exchange relationships has not been sufficiently addressed in the literature. This study examines the investment in technology over time in an effort to achieve sustainability and secondarily to support green initiatives by minimizing environmental impacts. The literature suggests integrated supply chain contractors emphasize efficiency and flexibility which leads to organizational performance improvements. This study compares productivity changes in the logistics industry measures after significant RFID investments over time. Productivity ratios collected for the fiscal years of 2000-2013 from financial statements are used to investigate technology investments effects.Since 2003, many end users (Wal-Mart specifically) mandated the implementation of RFID technology as one part of a larger system in reaching long term …

Studies in Government contracting are relatively new manifestation to academic research. Expanding theories to practitioner challenges may offer new concepts and insights to potential solutions to these challenges. Through a review of relevant literature, the researcher sought to 1) identify an operational definition of sustainability in government contracting and 2) bridge gaps in information by exploring sustainability factors available for successful performance in government contracting. Findings provide noteworthy contributions of practices available to both businesses and contracting professionals designed to improve contracting performance and enhance business longevity for government contractors.

We analyze optimal contractual arrangements in a bilateral research and development (R&D) partnership between a risk-averse provider that conducts early-stage research followed by a regulatory verification stage and a risk-neutral client that performs late-stage development activities, including production, distribution, and marketing. The problem is formulated as a sequential investment game with the client as the principal, where the investments are observable but not verifiable. The model captures the inherent incentive alignment problems of double-sided moral hazard, risk aversion, and holdup. Counterfeit goods are becoming more sophisticated, from shoes to infant milk powder to aircraft parts, creating problems for consumers, firms, and governments. By comparing two types of counterfeiters—deceptive, so infiltrating a licit (but complicit) distributor, or nondeceptive in an illicit channel—we provide insights into the impact of anticounterfeiting strategies on a brand-name company, a counterfeiter, and consumers. Our analysis highlights that the effectiveness of these strategies depends critically on whether a brand-name company faces a nondeceptive or deceptive counterfeiter. For example, by improving quality, the brand-name company can improve her expected profit against a nondeceptive counterfeiter when the counterfeiter steals …

The transportation sector's carbon footprint and dependence on oil are of deep concern to policy makers in many countries. Use of all-electric drive trains is arguably the most realistic medium-term solution to address these concerns. However, motorist anxiety induced by an electric vehicle's limited range and high battery cost have constrained consumer adoption. A novel switching-station-based solution is touted as a promising remedy. Vehicles use standardized batteries that, when depleted, can be switched for fully charged batteries at switching stations, and motorists only pay for battery use. Survey methodology was utilized to gather data with both theoretical and practical implications on 21A force development practices. Solicitation of information regarding 21A competencies, utility of current AF logistics courses, and latent constructs were conducted through a web-based self-administered cross-sectional survey. A significant challenge facing the Air Force Medical Service (AFMS) Military Treatment Facilities (MTFs) is the perishability costs associated with its pharmaceutical stock. During a two year time period, the AFMS returned expired or nearly expired pharmaceuticals valued at over $23,000,000. In response to the waste represented by pharmaceutical perishability cost, this thesis analyzes the historical inventory management decisions of 173 MTF/pharmaceutical combinations and proposes an alternative inventory control policy to reduce perishability costs. We analyze two pricing mechanisms for information goods. These mechanisms are selling, where up-front payment allows unrestricted use, and pay-per-use, where payments are tailored to use. We analytically model a market where consumers differ in use frequency and where use on a pay-per-use basis invokes a psychological cost associated with the well known "ticking meter" effect. We demonstrate that pay-per-use yields higher profits in a monopoly provided the associated psychological cost is low. In a duopoly, one firm uses selling and the other uses pay-per-use. Here, in contrast to the monopoly, selling yields higher profits than pay-per-use. We demonstrate that, …

This paper presents the results of a large-scale benchmarking study of operations management (OM) courses in higher education. The goal of the research is to drive continuous improvement in the quality and value of the educational experience in academic institutions, and inform the training, development, and recruitment efforts of SCM professionals. Non-linear processes within complex systems are difficult to predict. Using discrete event simulation (DES) models can be helpful for presenting the uncertainty level embedded within these processes. However, the interpretations of the resulting outcomes can be challenging to analyze. This is evident when experimenting with simulation models, and therefore requires the adaptation of existing models. Introducing cyclic entities such as interconnected resources to the simulation model adds a new level of complexity to the model.
