Impact On Hospital Profitability Due To Covid Safety Guidelines, Khaja Umair Shariff, Anna Noel Franklin

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Introduction: The pandemic of COVID 19 presented a unique challenge to hospitals and healthcare systems that they have been struggling to function in. Operating costs had increased with new protocols, planning, operating space, supplies, and staffing. This coupled with the loss of revenue has led to approximately 10% - 20% salary reductions, furloughs, and loss of benefits such as PTO and vacation days to employees. Hospital’s cash reserves are being depleted due to increased operations costs and reduced revenue. Government funding, such as the CARES Act provided by the sanction of the Department of Health and Human Services Office, …

Analysis Of Massive Online Medical Consultation Service Data To Understand Physicians’ Economic Return: Observational Data Mining Study, Jinglu Jiang, Ann-Frances Cameron, Ming Yang

Management and Accounting Faculty Scholarship

Background: Online health care consultation has become increasingly popular and is considered a potential solution to health care resource shortages and inefficient resource distribution. However, many online medical consultation platforms are struggling to attract and retain patients who are willing to pay, and health care providers on the platform have the additional challenge of standing out in a crowd of physicians who can provide comparable services. Objective: This study used machine learning (ML) approaches to mine massive service data to (1) identify the important features that are associated with patient payment, as opposed to free trial–only appointments; (2) explore the …

The Role Of Feedback In Leader Identity Development: An Examination Of The Impact Of The Deficits-Based Versus Strengths-Based Feedback, Thiraput Pitichat Jan 2020

The Role Of Feedback In Leader Identity Development: An Examination Of The Impact Of The Deficits-Based Versus Strengths-Based Feedback, Thiraput Pitichat

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The aim of this dissertation is to investigate the relationship between feedback and leader identity, particularly the impact of deficits-based versus strengths-based feedback. This dissertation consists of two empirical studies: 1) a cross-sectional, online experiment (N = 280) and 2) a cross-sectional, field experiment (N = 177). I examined the impact of feedback on leader identity through the mechanisms of cognitive controlled processing and effort. I found that receiving leadership feedback was important in shaping leader identity. Specifically, feedback that focused on leadership strengths increased new leaders’ positive emotions, which positively influenced their leader identity. However, feedback that highlighted leadership …

Covid-19 In Indigenous Communities: Five Protective Factors Of “Exercising” Sovereignty, Kelsey Leonard, Natalie Welch, Alisse Ali-Joseph Jan 2020

Covid-19 In Indigenous Communities: Five Protective Factors Of “Exercising” Sovereignty, Kelsey Leonard, Natalie Welch, Alisse Ali-Joseph

Faculty Publications

Indigenous Peoples have an inherent responsibility and right to “exercising” sovereignty - the practice of sport and physical activity in performance of our cultural, political, and spiritual citizenship (Ali-Joseph 2018). During the COVID-19 pandemic, access to and equity (inequity) in sport and physical activity has been felt (physically, spiritually, politically) within Indigenous communities. We implement an abundance-based Indigenous approach to understanding Indigenous Peoples’ responses to the coronavirus pandemic through sport and its far-reaching ramifications in Indian Country. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic we have seen Indigenous Peoples utilize social media such as Facebook and TikTok to reimagine Indigenous sport …

Strategies To Retain Mental Health Workers In Community Mental Health Clinics, Debbie L. Young Jan 2020

Strategies To Retain Mental Health Workers In Community Mental Health Clinics, Debbie L. Young

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

In 2017, the United States employee turnover rate for mental health workers with 2 or more years of experience was more than 50%. High turnover rates among these mental health workers are associated with inadequate quality of care for patients with mental health issues in community mental health clinics. Grounded in Herzberg’s two-factor theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore retention strategies used by health care administrators to retain their mental health workers with more than 2 years of experience. The participants consisted of 6 health care administrators who successfully implemented strategies to minimize high …

Effects Of Transformational Leadership On Direct Home Healthcare Employee Turnover, Lisa K. Johnson Jan 2020

Effects Of Transformational Leadership On Direct Home Healthcare Employee Turnover, Lisa K. Johnson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Ineffective leadership and excessive direct home healthcare workers’ intent to resign may decrease home healthcare worker satisfaction, increase workplace accidents, and hinder the quality of patient home healthcare. Home healthcare leaders have a problem of retaining direct home healthcare workers and can benefit from comprehending the factors that enhance leadership and mitigate the turnover of home healthcare workers. Grounded in transformational leadership theory, the purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationship between the perception of transformational leadership behaviors and direct care intent to resign. The population consisted of direct home healthcare workers who reported to frontline …

Successful Retention Strategies By Perfusion Managers To Reduce Perfusionist Attrition, Krysta Lynne Gleeson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Perfusion managers who lack strategies to mitigate perfusionist attrition place a strain on their remaining employees and incur replacement costs for their organization. Grounded in Vroom’s expectancy model, the purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies perfusion managers use to mitigate perfusionists attrition within open-heart centers in a northeast U.S. city. Data were collected through digital semistructured interviews with 5 licensed perfusionists who demonstrated successful staff retention. Perfusionist job listings were used as a secondary data source. Data were analyzed using Yin’s 5 step process. Four significant themes emerged: job satisfaction, work-life balance, surveys, and compensation. Perfusion …

An Exploration In Accountable Care Organization Structure, Contingency And Performance, 2015-2017, Siriporn P. Satjapot

Theses and Dissertations

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 enacted one of the most significant reforms seen in the United States healthcare landscape. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) led transformation efforts in regulatory reform and coverage expansion across the U.S. population. Since 2010, care delivery systems have been shifting from episodic, decentralized and fee-for-service models to value-based population health models, like accountable care organizations (ACO). ACOs have been specifically primed for local response to improve the health of their communities. ACO research has traditionally focused on performance measures like mortality, readmissions, quality outcomes and savings. ACO organizational characteristics …
