Generic Strategies, Leader Attributes, Environmental Uncertainty, And Organizational Performance: An Empirical Investigation Of Contingencies And Configurational Outcomes, Tope Adeyemi-Bello
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The implications of strategy, environmental uncertainty, and leader attributes to the performance of organizations have been the subject of many research studies. The traditional interaction-based contingency approach that has typically been used in the management literature for examining the interrelationships between these variables, may very often be inadequate to capture the overall pattern of fit among them. A contemporary approach that allows researchers to examine sophisticated relationships between variables is configuration or systems theory— which suggests that inevitable relationships exist between strategic, environmental, contextual, and organizational variables and performance. This study used both the interaction and configuration-based approaches to determine …

A Study Of The Air Force Logistics Professional Development Model, David E. Gressman
Theses and Dissertations
The personnel population in the field of logistics has two major divisions. The first, is to organizations providing logistic support for the Air Force mission and is the Operations and maintenance area. The second area is Acquisition, which supports the Air Force mission to acquire new weapon systems. Until recently, there was no clear plan for logisticians assigned in these two major divisions to enhance their educational development. This research project reviewed several logistic career enhancement programs focusing on two new programs, the Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) and the Logistics Professional Development Program (LOGPDP). The APDP program has received …

Having Friends In High Places: The Effects Of Structural Characteristics Of Mentoring Dyads On Protégé Career Outcomes, Terri A. Scandura Phd, Chester A. Schriesheim
Management Faculty Articles and Papers
Three structural characteristics of mentoring dyads (the mentor’s hierarchical level, duration of the mentoring relationship, and how long the protégé has been without a mentor) were proposed as having main and possibly interactive effects with three mentoring functions (social support, career coaching, and role modeling) on five protégé outcome variables (career expectations, commitment to the firm, number of hours worked during peak season, number of direct reports supervised, and current annual salary). Data from a sample of Certified Public Accountants (CPAs; N=786) were employed to first assess the distinctiveness of the proposed three mentoring functions by maximum likelihood confirmatory factor …

Ua3/8/6 Report Of The Task-Force On Part-Time Faculty, Wku President's Office-Meredith
WKU Administration Documents
During the 1991 fall semester, President Thomas Meredith appointed a Task Force on Part-Time Faculty at WKU. He requested that the task force conduct a study and make recommendations to the university regarding such issues as part-time faculty compensation and benefits, rates of usage, quality of instruction, orientation and evaluation and administration and budgeting. The study was stimulated, in part, by the fact that the university has in recent years reached historic highs in the use of part-time faculty.

Investigation Of A Program That Manages Cultural Diversity To Determine Its Relationship To A Profitable And Efficient Business Operation, Joan M. Hubbard
Investigation Of A Program That Manages Cultural Diversity To Determine Its Relationship To A Profitable And Efficient Business Operation, Joan M. Hubbard
Theses
This thesis begins with the purpose of investigating a program that recognizes, accepts, values and manages cultural diversity in the workplace to determine its relationship to a profitable and efficient business operation.
Significant demographic changes are expected to occur by the year 2000 resulting in a more culturally diverse labor force. In addition to a labor force wherein "white males" become the minority, this labor force will be more resistant to shedding ethnic and sexual distinctions.
In the past, managers have achieved high-level mastery over physical production . However, as labor constitutes the greatest single cost component of output, the …

Women In Leadership National Conference 1992: Women, Communication And Power, Margaret Butterworth (Ed.)
Research outputs pre 2011
Victorian feminist lawyer and social activist, Dr. Jocelynne Scutt, confronted the issue of women and power by drawing upon a powerful reading of stories from women. These stories, drawn from ordinary and not so ordinary women, showed the barriers that face women as they attempt to deal with a daily reality infused with masculine power, violence, fright, shame, and self-realization. She spoke poignantly of a world that is all to familiar to women; women whose capacities have been curbed sharply by a common theme in their lives: domination and coercion...

A Delphi Forecast Of 1996 Roles: Air Force Institute Of Technology Information Resource Management Graduates Assigned To Base Level, David O. Block
Theses and Dissertations
Graduates of the Air Force Institute of Technology's Information Resource Management master's degree program who are subsequently assigned to base-level positions believe their IRM expertise is wasted in base administration roles that preclude the use of their up-to-date technical educations in managing automated information resources. This research forecasts the role AFIT IRM graduates assigned to base-level positions will need to fill by the year 1996. The research further determined what changes are necessary to resolve the perceived differences between current and forecast roles for these graduates. The Delphi survey method of forecasting was selected as an effective method of discovering …

A Decision Support System To Assist Manpower Forecasting In The Royal Australian Air Force, Simon J. Kelly
A Decision Support System To Assist Manpower Forecasting In The Royal Australian Air Force, Simon J. Kelly
Theses and Dissertations
This study considers a problem that faces Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) manpower and personnel managers. Information decisions on the future force structure of the RAAF officer corps can be made by managers if they have access to objective, valid, reliable forecasts. At present, the RAAF has no standard mechanism to perform forecasts--a variety of tools are used. Given the importance and cost of the manpower resource, one integrated forecasting tool would support manpower decisions greatly. The aim of this research is to address the existing forecasting deficiency in the RAAF and provide an automated system to integrate current forecasting …
The Organizational Impact Of Smoke Break Management In Strategic Air Command, Glenn G. Hinken
The Organizational Impact Of Smoke Break Management In Strategic Air Command, Glenn G. Hinken
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the organizational impact of smoke break management in Strategic Air Command. Analysis of data from a survey questionnaire showed that although the smoking and smoke break issues touched the majority of the people in SAC and almost every smoker surveyed reported taking smoke breaks, just 27 percent of respondents reported their organization had a smoke break policy. Most of these respondents indicated the policies were lenient in terms of regulating the time and duration of the breaks. Smokers reported spending an average 41.09 minutes per day taking smoke breaks. This figure differed significantly from the time smokers …

An Analysis Of Air Force Management Career Development Based On Timing Of Skills Needs And Effectiveness Of Development Methods, Sebastiano Deliso
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to analyze the association between the perceived importance of management skills and management level; also to assess the most effective means of developing each of those management skills. Data collection involved a two step process. First, a literature search was conducted to compile a list of common management skills and development methods. Second, from this knowledge a survey instrument was created and distributed. Data analysis included three basic methodologies: (1) non-parametric statistics, (2) frequency distribution analysis, and (3) qualitative analysis. The results indicate a high degree of association between perceived skills importance and management …

Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of work attitudes and rewards on the performance of TAC base level Supply personnel. The research used a survey instrument to examine a cross section of all enlisted employees assigned to various positions within TAC Supply. The research had four major objectives: (1) test three causal hypotheses through path analysis to determine if the research results supported or disconfirmed each of them; (2) determine if individuals functioning in customer service positions are significantly different than those who are not supporting customers; (3) identify opportunities available to Supply managers for improving …
The Development And Retention Of Critical Thinking Dispositions Among Students Of The Air Force Institute Of Technology Graduate Management Programs, Luke J. Schaub
Theses and Dissertations
This effort analyzed the development and retention of critical thinking dispositions in students of the Air Force Institute of Technology's School of Systems and Logistics graduate management program. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator was used as a measure of subjects' dispositions. Pre- and post- test surveys were administered when subjects entered and exited the program, and a follow-up administered two to five years later. The pre- and post-tests were administered to 427 subjects and the follow-up to 201 of those subjects. It was found that subjects increased their preference for logical, objective decision-making while enrolled in the program. Subjects also increased …

A Cross-Sectional Investigation Of The Effects Of Regional Labor Market Conditions On The Reenlistment Decisions Of Air Force Enlistees, Deanna L. Cooper
Theses and Dissertations
A great deal of literature measuring the relationship between labor market perceptions and voluntary employee turnover exists. However, literature measuring the relationship between general labor market conditions and voluntary employee turnover is scarce. Moreover, to date only one article has included both labor market perceptions and general labor market conditions in testing a voluntary turnover model. This thesis provides a second test of a proposed voluntary turnover model that incorporates both labor market perceptions and general labor market conditions. Using survey data collected by Flores in 1984 and reenlistment data collected by Hoene in 1986, a cross-sectional investigation of the …

An Analysis Of The Benefits Of Operational Experience Acquired By Air Force Systems Command (Afsc) Officers Through The Broadening Experience Tour (Best) Program, Andrew A. Abraham
Theses and Dissertations
This research effort was conducted to study the effects that operational experience acquired through the Broadening Experience Tour (BEST) program has on the ability of scientific and development engineering (S and DE) officers to develop useful operator-oriented systems. A review of the related literature revealed that although the Air Force encourages S and DE officers to acquire operational experience, there is no empirical evidence of the reported benefits of this experience. A cross sectional study was undertaken to measure the difference in self reported competency between samples of S and DE officers with and without operational experience. A survey was …

Challenges To United States Tactical Air Force Aircraft Maintenance Personnel: Past, Present And Future, Barbara L. Harris
Theses and Dissertations
This study assessed the challenges Tactical Air Force (TAF) aircraft maintenance personnel face as a result of the TAF reorganization. The goal was to provide aircraft maintenance managers a basis for evaluating and meeting those challenges. To accomplish this, emphasis was placed on documenting the concepts, events, and conditions which led to changes in military aircraft maintenance from the birth of aviation to the present. Current issues such as the proposed move to two-level maintenance and the formation of the TAF composite and Objective Wings were also addressed. Research was conducted through the review of available historical documents, complemented by …
An Examination Of The Perceived Importance Of Technical Competence In Acquisition Project Management, Charles R. Baumgardner
An Examination Of The Perceived Importance Of Technical Competence In Acquisition Project Management, Charles R. Baumgardner
Theses and Dissertations
This research examined the importance Air Force acquisition project managers attribute to technical competence, and several individual and situational factors which might affect their perceptions of the importance of technical competence: extent of acquisition experience, degree of technical academic training, level of project technology, caliber of technical project team, and acquisition phase. A review of the literature revealed that previous studies of project and program managers suffered from several limitations with regard to a direct examination of the importance of technical competence. No single study has empirically supported a clear determination on the importance of this attribute to project managers. …
