Unemployment: Concepts And Issues., Englama A.
Bullion
The issue of persistent unemployment and overall manpower planning and utilization poses a great challenge to policy planners, human resources experts, and persons debating with employment programmed planning and implementation. Based on the experience of the NDE at promoting financial support for graduate employment promotion, there is a need for a sensitization programmed for public/commercial banks and other institutions on the need for lending to small and micro enterprises. This paper has examined Past policy measures for solving unemployment problems. There is strong need for institutional collaboration and improved coordination of policy measures for dealing with unemployment. It is evident …

Restructuring The Educational System As A Long-Term Solution To The Unemployment Problem In Nigeria., Abraham B. Borishade
Bullion
The educational process, formal or informal consciously created, represents an essential investment necessary for industrialization; such education must be planned to fit the needs of a changing society so that as the Urban complex grows and demands expand. Education is the key with which to unlock the economic potential of the people. In contemporary developing countries, there is an incongruous relationship between education and their economies. This is reflected in the rising pool of the phenomenon of educated unemployed more than ever before. This paper examines the increasing problem associated with unemployment in Nigeria. The author conclude that It is …

The Role Of Governance In National Development., Nathaniel C. Ozigbo
The Role Of Governance In National Development., Nathaniel C. Ozigbo
Bullion
One of the principal issues in the analysis of development is the extent to which the state and corporate organizations influence it. Prevailing ideas about the links among democracy, good governance and economic growth have come almost full circle over the past three decades. Governance is defined as the good government of society. Good government guides the country along a course leading to the desired goals, in this case development. The paper has focused on the various discussions about the conditions for good governance, which raises questions about the structure and functioning of the state, its relationship to society and …
The Relationship Among Self-Esteem, Self-Efficacy, And Training Performance At A Government-Funded Nuclear Operations Complex In East Tennessee, Garland Sharp
Masters Theses
The primary purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among self-efficacy, self-esteem, and training performance. This study was similar to a study conducted by Mone, Baker, and Jeffries in 1995. Using college students, Mone et al. (1995) tried to determine which construct, self-efficacy or self-esteem, more accurately predicted academic success. This study's purpose was to determine if relationships existed among self-efficacy, self-esteem, and training performance in an industrial training situation using employees in the workplace.
A self-esteem and self-efficacy instrument along with a written test were used to gather data from the entire population (N=75) of workers at …
Dimension And Exercise Variance In Assessment Center Scores: A Large-Scale Evaluation Of Multitrait-Multimethod Studies, Filip Lievens, James M. Conway
Dimension And Exercise Variance In Assessment Center Scores: A Large-Scale Evaluation Of Multitrait-Multimethod Studies, Filip Lievens, James M. Conway
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This study addresses 3 questions regarding assessment center construct validity: (a) Are assessment center ratings best thought of is reflecting dimension constructs (dimension model). exercises (exercise model). or a combination? (b) To what extent do dimensions or exercises account for variance? (c) Which design characteristics increase dimension variance? To this end, a large set of multitrait-multimethod studies (N = 34) were analyzed, showing that assessment center ratings were best represented (i.e., in terms of fit and admissible solutions) by a model with correlated dimensions and exercises specified a correlated uniquenesses. In this model, dimension variance equals exercise variance. Significantly more …
Why Can't We Wait (To Spend) And The Law Of Unintended Consequences: Potential Negative Impact On Minority Employees From Well-Intentioned Organizational Compensation Practices, James R. Jones
Marketing and Management Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
In this time of increasing uncertainty about business viability and stability, many organizations are looking to gain control of their "bottom line" by strengthening the link between organizational outcomes and employee rewards. Long gone are the days of steadily and automatically increasing worker salaries as a hoped-for method of expanding productivity. Indeed, there is a school of thought that suggests that automatic pay increases act as a "demotivator" for many individuals. The more common approach currently is to utilize incentives (i.e., additional compensation/rewards given for performance beyond normal expectations) as a way of enhancing employee work motivation, thereby leading to …

The Construct Validity Of A Belgian Assessment Centre: A Comparison Of Different Models, Filip Lievens, Etienne Van Keer
The Construct Validity Of A Belgian Assessment Centre: A Comparison Of Different Models, Filip Lievens, Etienne Van Keer
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This study investigates the construct validity of a Belgian assessment centre through a comprehensive set of confirmatory factor analysis models. In particular, the general confirmatory factor analysis approach as well as the correlated uniqueness approach are fitted to the same data. Results replicate Sagie and Magnezy's (1997) finding that the correlated uniqueness model is appropriate to represent exercise effects in assessment centres, as a good fit and no estimation problems are obtained. In this model the dimensions explain 36% of variance, revealing evidence of convergent validity. Possibly, this is due to the careful design of this assessment centre. Evidence of …

A New Construct Of Is Performance Measurement: Consonance Approach, Michael Weldon Boyd
A New Construct Of Is Performance Measurement: Consonance Approach, Michael Weldon Boyd
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to create a subjective measurement system that can assist in the successful creation of new information systems (IS). That entails moving from the commonly used objective measures of success (time and money constraints) to subjective measures (people's perceptions). Literature in the social perception area and goal congruence area has provided a basis for changing the measurement of success. Due to major differences in how people react to stimuli and perceived outcomes the objective measures must evolve to include subjective observations.
This research uses a questionnaire to gather data about the perceptions of the stakeholders …
In Whom We Trust: Group Membership As An Affective Context For Trust Development, Michele Williams
In Whom We Trust: Group Membership As An Affective Context For Trust Development, Michele Williams
Michele Williams
Examining the ways in which affect impacts the trust that develops between members of dissimilar groups broadens the study of trust development. People's perceptions of their own interdependence with other groups influence both their beliefs about group members' trustworthiness and their affect for group members. I propose that this affect, in turn, influences interpersonal trust development through multiple paths: cognitive, motivational, and behavioral. Using literature on social information processing, emotion, and intergroup behavior, I elucidate the social and affective context of trust development.
Corporate Training Programmes: Lessons For Colleges And Universities, Aaron W. Hughey
Corporate Training Programmes: Lessons For Colleges And Universities, Aaron W. Hughey
Counseling & Student Affairs Faculty Publications
Employee training programmes have long been considered one of the keys to corporate success. The primary focus of this article is on what higher education professionals can learn from their counterparts in business and industry with respect to training in a collegiate environment. The elements of a successful training programme are discussed along with how the process can be adapted by colleges and universities. The distinction between training and education is explained, with a discussion of why 'soft skills' training initiatives are often less effective than skills-based approaches. The critical role of the training coordinator in facilitating a programme is …
The Relationship Of Internal And External Commitment Foci To Objective Job Performance Measures, Mark A. Siders, Gerard George, Ravi Dharwadkar
The Relationship Of Internal And External Commitment Foci To Objective Job Performance Measures, Mark A. Siders, Gerard George, Ravi Dharwadkar
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Prior research reports of a weak commitment-performance relationship can be attributed to inconsistency in conceptualization and measurement of the constructs. In this study, we differentially relate attitudinal commitment to internal (organization and supervisor) and external (customer) foci to objective measures of job performance. Results suggest that both internal foci are related to organizationally rewarded job performance and that the external focus influences job performance relevant to and rewarded by customers. Implications of these findings are discussed.

Understanding The Assessment Center Process: Where Are We Now?, Filip Lievens, Richard J Klimoski
Understanding The Assessment Center Process: Where Are We Now?, Filip Lievens, Richard J Klimoski
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Assessment centers have become widespread in Western Europe, Northern America, and Australia (Newell & Shackleton, 1994). The Task Force on Assessment Center Guidelines (1989) defined assessment centers as “a standardized evaluation of behavior based on multiple inputs. Multiple trained observers and techniques are used. Judgments about behaviors are made, in major part, from specifically developed assessment simulations. These judgments are pooled in a meeting among the assessors or by a statistical integration process” (p. 460).

Assessor Training Strategies And Their Effects On Accuracy, Interrater Reliability, And Discriminant Validity, Filip Lievens
Assessor Training Strategies And Their Effects On Accuracy, Interrater Reliability, And Discriminant Validity, Filip Lievens
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This study compares the effects of data-driven assessor training with schema-driven assessor training and control training. The sample consisted of 229 industrial and organizational psychology students and 161 managers who were randomly assigned to 1 of these training strategies. Participants observed and rated candidates in an assessment center exercise. The data-driven and schema-driven assessor training approaches outperformed the control training on all 3 dependent variables. The schema-driven assessor training resulted in the largest values of interrater reliability, dimension differentiation, and accuracy. Managers provided significantly more-accurate ratings than students but distinguished less between the dimensions. Practical implications regarding the design of …

At the conclusion, suggestions to increase the effectiveness of …
Analysis Of Factors Influencing Tolerance Of Fraternization, George J. Matusak Iii
Analysis Of Factors Influencing Tolerance Of Fraternization, George J. Matusak Iii
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores several factors that might explain discrepancies in the tolerance level of fraternization among company grade officers within the Air Force. Factors that may influence implementation may include the nature of the relationship (platonic or sexual), the sex of the participants (same or different gender or gender of the senior person), whether the incident occurred between people in the same chain of command, and whether the survey respondent was ever stationed at a remote location. This research used a survey sent out to a population of company grade officers and comprising of scenarios that varied the combination of …
An Investigation Of The Contracting Officer Career Pyramid, William B. Elyea
An Investigation Of The Contracting Officer Career Pyramid, William B. Elyea
Theses and Dissertations
Air Force contracting officers rely on published guidance to assist in establishing their career objectives. This thesis uses empirical data to evaluate the published Air Force career guidance. The data set is comprised of complete duty histories from all active duty colonels, colonel selects, and general officers in the contracting career field. The guidance implies a career path to an exceptional career but provides no empirical validation. This thesis follows a rigorous procedure to objectively evaluate the Air Force guidance. The guidance is translated into 18 research questions based on its main tenets. Each duty occurrence is categorized by type …
Capturing The Policy That Air Force Raters Use When Writing Performance Appraisals On Junior Officers, Owen D. Stephens
Capturing The Policy That Air Force Raters Use When Writing Performance Appraisals On Junior Officers, Owen D. Stephens
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the relationship between four dimensions of performance leadership, task performance, interpersonal facilitation, and job dedication and overall performance by junior officers in the Air Force. It was hypothesized that the four dimensions would have different relative importance to overall performance, ratee gender would have no effect on rating policy, and raters with greater experience would show greater rating consistency. Finally, it was hypothesized that the Conscientiousness factor of the International Personality Inventory Protocol and Positive and Negative Affectivity may be correlated with the relative importance of the four dimensions of performance and a rater leniency measure and …
Predictability, Work-Family Conflict, And Intent To Stay: An Air Force Case Study, Patrick J. Obruba
Predictability, Work-Family Conflict, And Intent To Stay: An Air Force Case Study, Patrick J. Obruba
Theses and Dissertations
A survey was completed by 362 active duty Air Force members in December 2000 regarding their perceptions of schedule predictability, work-family conflict, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and intent to stay with the Air Force. Theory suggests that a program designed to create schedule predictability, the Expeditionary Aerospace Force (EAF), would moderate the relationship between predictability and intent to stay. Using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), plausible evidence was found to support the idea that schedule predictability plays a role in intentions to stay via work-family conflict, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment. Additional evidence supported the theory that the path relationships generated …
Factors Influencing Air Force Members' Tolerance Of Fraternization, Amanda G. Brandau
Factors Influencing Air Force Members' Tolerance Of Fraternization, Amanda G. Brandau
Theses and Dissertations
AFI 36-2909, provides the current policy on acceptable and unacceptable social interactions between Air Force members. The intent of distinguishing relationships as professional or unprofessional is to preserve proper respect for authority and maintain focus on the mission through professional relationships while avoiding the negative effects of unprofessional relationships. Fraternization is one unacceptable type, which governs relationships between officers and enlisted members. There have long been differences between official policy and actual practice in the area of fraternization. These differences likely influence the acceptance of existing policy, and the amount of tolerance toward behaviors that Air Force policy would consider …
Establishing A Career Development Plan For The System Support Manager, Noelia Mendoza
Establishing A Career Development Plan For The System Support Manager, Noelia Mendoza
Theses and Dissertations
Career development plans are created to assist individuals in establishing their career objectives. The most commonly used career path model is the pyramid career model. It identifies the ideal job experiences, training, and education needed to reach career success. Although the model seems to provide everything needed to succeed, it fails to answer why the experiences identified are important. The answer to that question can be found in the competency model. This thesis looked at how the pyramid career model and competency model can be used to groom individuals. The variables that contribute to overall job performance and the competencies …
