Career Development Of Air Force Officers In Contracting: An Examination Of Perception And Understanding, Martin P. Hamlin
Career Development Of Air Force Officers In Contracting: An Examination Of Perception And Understanding, Martin P. Hamlin
Theses and Dissertations
This research considered five factors deemed necessary for supporting career development, including experience, professionalism, expectations, mentoring, and training. The author studied the perceptions of captains in the contracting career field as a means of better understanding the unique career development challenges faced by contracting officers. This study concluded that captains in contracting do not perceive one best career path, nor one best set of professional and technical skills. Career expectations remain high and mentoring activity low, despite recent institutional emphasis directed at both. The value of current required formal training, as rated by contracting officers, seems to be high.

A Test Of A Rapid Developer Model: Workplace Factors Associated With Learning And Development, James A. Alexander
A Test Of A Rapid Developer Model: Workplace Factors Associated With Learning And Development, James A. Alexander
Dissertations
The speed at which individuals and organizations learn and develop is a vital contributor to organizational change and organizational effectiveness. This study postulated the notion of "rapid developers”, those persons who learn and acquire job competence more quickly than their peers. The purpose of this study was to identify, define, and differentiate the factors associated with "rapid development."
The author constructed a rapid developer model based upon the review of the disciplines of training, performance technology, total quality, organization learning, and organization culture. The model identified and defined the contextual factors that could be expected, based on an understanding of …
Registration Of Apprenticeship Programs And The Turnover Of Skilled Trade Employees, Dennis J. Bona
Registration Of Apprenticeship Programs And The Turnover Of Skilled Trade Employees, Dennis J. Bona
Dissertations
The primary purpose of the study is to provide empirical evidence that refutes arguments made by employers who resist registering an apprenticeship program because they believe it will increase turnover of their skilled trade employees. To do this, data were collected to test the hypothesis that companies that have a registered apprenticeship program experience less turnover of their skilled trade employees compared to companies that do not. Secondary hypotheses were also developed to compare turnover ratios with union orientation, size, and wage structure of employers to help validate the results and demonstrate alternative explanations for turnover of skilled trade employees. …

Michigan State Government Employment Sector: Are We In Line With The National Trends?, Thomas Walter Cronkright Ii
Michigan State Government Employment Sector: Are We In Line With The National Trends?, Thomas Walter Cronkright Ii
Honors Theses
Examines the national trends of employment to make a comparison for Michigan State government employment. Results show that Michigan's public employment trends do not follow national employment trends in a comparable way. Michigan is distinct from the nation for several reasons: a hiring freeze placed on Michigan State Departments, higher levels of union participation and employee pay, and benefits packages that cost more than the Executive Branch of the U.S. government. Thus, either Michigan provides superior benefits or it pays a premium for those benefits. Suggests further research is needed.

Creating Effective Teams: Redefining Team Roles, Y Sriram
Creating Effective Teams: Redefining Team Roles, Y Sriram
IIMB Management Review
Today world-class organisations are able to achieve their goals only through team work. Team work is no longer a passing fad but an absolute prerequisite for business improvements to succeed, particularly now, when business seems to be facing a recession. Effective team working through the understanding of team roles has been facilitated by a Human Resource intervention in ABB, a large engineering company in India.

Towards Understanding Why Assessment Centers Work: An Evaluation Of The Subtle Criterion Contamination Hypothesis, Christopher T. Rotolo
Towards Understanding Why Assessment Centers Work: An Evaluation Of The Subtle Criterion Contamination Hypothesis, Christopher T. Rotolo
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The success of the assessment center method in predicting job performance has been one of the most researched efforts in personnel psychology (Thornton, 1992). However, there is little reported evidence showing that assessment center procedures produce scores that serve as valid representations of separate constructs (Klimoski & Brickner, 1987). It is perhaps ironic, then, that despite the success stories, we still do not understand why assessment centers "work," (i.e., predict performance).
This study examined the subtle criterion contamination hypothesis as an explanation to assessment center validity. The subtle criterion contamination hypothesis states that assessment centers predict managerial performance because assessors …

Employee Motivation: What Works, What Doesn't, Michelle A. Koenig
Employee Motivation: What Works, What Doesn't, Michelle A. Koenig
Theses
Corporate America has seen a multitude of changes in the last century, but the change with the greatest impact is that of the employees. In the 'old' days, it was an employer's market. Employees felt lucky just to have a job. Companies did not spend time or money worrying about whether or not their employees were happy or motivated. The majority of jobs required manual labor and little or no education. This made replacing an unhappy or unmotivated worker much easier. In addition, there weren't as many U.S. or foreign companies competing for employees.
In today's competitive market, hiring and …

The New American Family, And A New Generation Of Young Americans Entering The Workforce, Flo A. Kistner
Theses
This thesis focuses on the dysfunction of a significant proportion of America's youth and shows how it can be attributed directly to lack of parental presence or parental control. Today's youth are in total chaos. Research shows there is a definite lack of quality time with today's children from their parents. This lack of parental involvement plays a crucial role in the development or lack of development of today's youth and tomorrow's workers.

Employee Benefits, Kimberly Elinor Miller
Employee Benefits, Kimberly Elinor Miller
Theses
This paper discusses how group benefits have changed over the past ten years, what corporations are offering their employees such as medical insurance, employee assistance programs, wellness training programs, child care programs, flexible compensation plans, continuing education benefits and retirement benefits and how each one of these benefits is set up. Employers want not only to implement benefit programs which will help them meet their organizational goals, but also to attract, retain and motivate employees. In order to succeed in these efforts they must install a program of benefits that is both cost effective and will meet organizational profit goals. …
Glass Ceilings, Glass Walls And Sticky Floors: Barriers To Career Progress For Women In The Finance Industry, Leonie V. Still
Glass Ceilings, Glass Walls And Sticky Floors: Barriers To Career Progress For Women In The Finance Industry, Leonie V. Still
Research outputs pre 2011
Interest in the employment status of women has been an on-going research topic in Australia since the 1975 Royal Commission into Australian Government Administration conducted the first status review of the Australian federal public service (Taperell, Fox and Roberts, 1975). Since then numerous report have examined the position of women in the professions, particular occupations, tertiary institutions, state public services and industry and commerce. Despite the passage of time a similar finding emerges from these investigations: namely, that irrespective of the area being examined within Australian society, women's employment is still primarily confined to certain occupational groupings while they are …

Women And Leadership Working Paper Series: Paper No. 12: Career Barriers And The Older Woman Manager, Leonie V. Still, Wendy Timms
Research outputs pre 2011
The removal of the age retirement barrier has led to expectations that more and more older workers will remain in the workforce past the usual retirement age of 65. Women make up an increasing proportion of older workers, and Patrickson and Hartmann ( 1996) have shown that Australian women are planning not to retire in order to improve their retirement income.
An important section of the older workers group are the managerial and professional women, aged in their 50s, who are part of the first generation of women to have long-term careers like men i.e. full-time careers extending over 25 …
Homework And Telework: A Guide To Best Practice In Human Resource Management, Peter Standen, Maryam Omari
Homework And Telework: A Guide To Best Practice In Human Resource Management, Peter Standen, Maryam Omari
Research outputs pre 2011
In Australia today there is widespread interest in homeworking and teleworking as flexible work options with significant advantages to both employers and employees. In the research behind this guide we surveyed 500 Australian organisations, finding employer interest in these advantages, along with uncertainty about how to implement homeworking, and some worries about potential drawbacks. Significantly, those organisations that had implemented homeworking reported positive outcomes. In an interview study, homeworkers themselves reported improved work performance, and were appreciative of the flexibility. This guide shows how to implement homework and telework to achieve such outcomes while avoiding the problems that concern managers.

Women And Leadership Working Paper Series: Paper No. 11: The Employment Status Of Women In The Australian Finance Industry, Leonie V. Still
Research outputs pre 2011
The finance industry is the seventh largest employer of women in Australia !Australian Bureau of Statistics, Labour Force Australia, 1996, p46). Yet despite its importance to women as a source of employment, no major review of the general overall employment status of women in the industry has occurred. Instead, research has concentrated on particular aspects of the sector - for example, part-time employment in banking !Alexander & Frank, 1990; Manning, 1990; Britt, 1995; Junor, Barlow & Patterson, 1993, 1994)...

Optimising Training Effectiveness: From Class Room To Work Place, N M Agrawal
IIMB Management Review
Continuous learning is vital to the survival of organisations in this borderless world. For learning to be effective, individuals and organisations must acquire relevant capabilities and successfully apply them to actual work situations. The design of a training system together with the characteristics of the participants and their organisations determine how effectively this transmission of newly acquired capabilities to work settings is achieved.
