The Measurement Of Human Intellectual Capital In The United States Air Force, Thomas J. Wagner Mar 1998

The Measurement Of Human Intellectual Capital In The United States Air Force, Thomas J. Wagner

Theses and Dissertations

For centuries, companies used basically the same accounting system developed in the fifteenth century to measure economic performance. Through much of this period the tangible value of a firm, its plants, property and equipment, was closely related to the market value of the firm. With the dawning of the information age, America has evolved from a manufacturing based economy to a service oriented economy. Closely related to this change from a blue collar to white collar workplace has been the widening gap between the market value of a company and its tangible assets. Roughly equal before, now the tangible assets …

Attracting And Retaining Talent : A Managerial Challenge, Y Sriram, Abhijit Bhaduri

IIMB Management Review

Getting the right person for the right job and retaining him/her is a challenge all organisations face. What are the strategies evolved by organisations to attract and retain talented manpower, across different levels and functions? How do attractive compensation schemes and 'golden handcuffs' rate against providing learning opportunities and a work culture that promotes creativity? Where do the old fashioned virtues of loyalty, honesty and hard work stand? Are some organisations more successful in nurturing their employees in line with their vision? What can be done to counter the flight of talent? These were some of the issues which came …

Redefining Loyalty: Motivational Strategies And Employee Loyalty In An Era Of Downsizing, Sandra Obilade

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Retaining employee loyalty after restructuring is a problem for all types of businesses. The major issue concerns how management and employees can establish a new, mutually acceptable "psychological contract" which ensures employee loyalty but not lifelong employment. Eighteen small businesses in Fairfield County, Connecticut were surveyed to investigate loyalty and motivation after downsizing. A significant correlation was found between loyalty and motivation. Furthermore, several motivational techniques employed were inconsistent with employee needs. Suggestions are offered on how to retain employee loyalty.

Effective Communication In The Performance Appraisal Interview: Face-To-Face Communication For Public Managers In The Culturally Diverse Workplace, John F. Kikoski Jan 1998

Effective Communication In The Performance Appraisal Interview: Face-To-Face Communication For Public Managers In The Culturally Diverse Workplace, John F. Kikoski

Political Science & Global Affairs Faculty Publications

A study restates and then extends a thesis about the performance appraisal process first published almost 15 years ago - that the public manager's performance in the face-to-face encounter of the appraisal interview itself is the Achilles' heel of the entire process. This 1983 article held that many public managers experience discomfort approaching the actual performance appraisal interview and difficulty in conducting it. They are usually untrained and may even be unaware of the scholarly work that has identified the skills that make for more effective face-to-face communication. The 1983 article also presented 6 specific microcommunication skills to help public …

An Understanding And A Quest For Excellence In Human Resources At An Urban Public School District, Juliette E. Douglas Jan 1998

An Understanding And A Quest For Excellence In Human Resources At An Urban Public School District, Juliette E. Douglas

Theses

This thesis will focus on how to transition the Human Resource Division at St. Louis Public Schools into a customer focused, responsive service organization. Like many other industries, urban education has some uniqueness but there are also some common issues. To better understand the management style traditionally used in urban education, this project started with conducting extensive research on the history of management in education.

History is only important in understanding the past. Good management must focus on the present and create the future. To better plan to create a changed human resource function, two basic management concepts were also …

An Evaluation Of The Competency Modeling Method Used By A Major Telecommunications Company, Sharon K. Kramer Jan 1998

An Evaluation Of The Competency Modeling Method Used By A Major Telecommunications Company, Sharon K. Kramer

Theses

This thesis focuses on competency model development methods and evaluating an actual competency model development method used by a consulting company on behalf of its client.

As HRD professionals get down to actually measuring human performance against the model they set forth to specify competency and its associated behaviors, they often find behavioral measurements to be subjective and relative, rather than objective and criterion-based.

The purpose of this study is to review competency model definitions and development methods, as well as the implications for using competency models to improve human performance, business results and competitive advantage.

The competency model development …

The Organizational Action Research Model, Morton Elfenbein, Stephen M. Brown, Kim H. Knight Jan 1998

The Organizational Action Research Model, Morton Elfenbein, Stephen M. Brown, Kim H. Knight

WCBT Faculty Publications

This chapter proposes a paradigm, which empowers practitioners to practice research to meet their needs and to advance the profession to which they belong. It proposes the integration of practitioner and researcher role as an alternative to the fragmented model that currently exists. In doing so, it draws much from the past tradition of the action researchers as well as the science approach espoused by others. In this way, the needs of individual managers to evaluate their espoused theories and their theories-in-use can be undertaken so that their organizations can function more realistically and can respond more effectively to the …

Where All The Children Are Above Average: A Meta Analysis Of The Performance Appraisal Purpose Affect, J. Jawahar, Chuck R. Williams Jan 1998

Where All The Children Are Above Average: A Meta Analysis Of The Performance Appraisal Purpose Affect, J. Jawahar, Chuck R. Williams

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

More than 40 years ago, Taylor and Wherry (1951) hypothesized that performance appraisal ratings obtained for administrative purposes, such as pay raises or promotions, would be more lenient than ratings obtained for research, feedback, or employee development purposes. However, research on appraisal purpose has yielded inconsistent results, with roughly half of such studies supporting this hypothesis and the other half refuting it. To account for those differences, a meta-analysis of performance appraisal purpose research was conducted with 22 studies and a total sample size of 57,775. Our results support Taylor and Wherry's hypothesis as performance evaluations obtained for administrative purposes …

The Interactive Effects Of Different Accounting Controls On Subordinates' Behaviour And Performance, Chong M. Lau Jan 1998

The Interactive Effects Of Different Accounting Controls On Subordinates' Behaviour And Performance, Chong M. Lau

Research outputs pre 2011

Prior research suggests that goal setting and an emphasis en meeting tight budget targets may influence the extent of subordinates' performance and slack creation. This study hypothesizes that other accounting controls may moderate these relationships. Specifically, it hypothesizes that: (i) budgetary performance is increased and (ii) budgetary slack creation is decreased when an emphasis on setting and meeting tight budget targets is complemented with a high extent of cost control. The results support a significant two-way interaction between Emphasis on setting and meeting tight budget targets and Cost control affecting budgetary performance. A significant two-way interaction between Emphasis en setting …

A New Look At Within-Source Interrater Reliability Of 360-Degree Feedback Ratings, Gary J. Greguras, Chet Robie Jan 1998

A New Look At Within-Source Interrater Reliability Of 360-Degree Feedback Ratings, Gary J. Greguras, Chet Robie

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study investigated within-source interrater reliability of supervisor, peer, and subordinate feedback ratings made for managerial development. Raters provided 360-degree feedback ratings on a sample of 153 managers. Using generalizability theory, results indicated that little within-source agreement exists; a large portion of the error variance is attributable to the combined rater main effect and Rater X Ratee effect; more raters are needed than currently used to reach acceptable levels of reliability; supervisors are the most reliable with trivial differences between peers and subordinates when the numbers of raters and items are held constant; and peers are the most reliable, followed …

Human Element In Shipping : Training And Competence Of Shore Based Personnel, Keith Joseph Miranda Dec 1997

Human Element In Shipping : Training And Competence Of Shore Based Personnel, Keith Joseph Miranda

World Maritime University Dissertations

This dissertation examines the need for the training of shore based personnel employed in shipping companies. Numerous studies address the human element in shipping - the Seafarer, as one of the main causes of accidents and pollution. As a result, regulations targeting the training of seafarers have been greatly enhanced in the recent past. Very little has been said about personnel manning shipping companies in numerous offices ashore. Rapid strides in communication have brought the “seafarer” and the “shore-farer” in close contact, the two being separated virtually by just the dialling of a few buttons of a telephone or a …

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Perception Levels Of Prime Beef Training And Readiness Task Confidence, D. Wade Lawrence Dec 1997

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Perception Levels Of Prime Beef Training And Readiness Task Confidence, D. Wade Lawrence

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examined the readiness training perception levels and task self-confidence of CE Prime BEEF personnel, and investigated the relationships between these two constructs. A heuristic model was developed which hypothesized that since previous research has shown that perception of training affects self-efficacy, and that self-efficacy affects performance, it may be inferred that training perception ultimately affects task performance. Surveys were sent to the target population to gather demographic data, perceptions of Prime BEEF readiness training and task confidence in both self and unit. Despite an improvement in perceptions over the past 12 years, results showed somewhat mediocre perception levels …

Human Resource Management And Quality Orientation In Banks, Aruna Mankidy Oct 1997

Human Resource Management And Quality Orientation In Banks, Aruna Mankidy

IIMB Management Review

In an era where Quality is the focus in a redefined perspective, service organisations have to orient themselves to quality management - not just for success but for survival. The experience of organisations implementing TQM has highlighted the cruciality of HR policies and practices. A project initiated by the National Institute of Bank Management explored the possibility of implementing Quality management approach in the HR department of a commercial bank. The pivotal point was to bring the "Internal Customer" orientation to the service department which could then be extended to the entire organisation. The framework developed and analysis carried out …
