The Role Of Social Support At Work On Job Burnout, Peerayuth Charoensukmongkol, Murad Moqbel, Sandra Gutierrez-Wirsching
The Role Of Social Support At Work On Job Burnout, Peerayuth Charoensukmongkol, Murad Moqbel, Sandra Gutierrez-Wirsching
Information Systems Faculty Publications
This study investigates the role of coworker and supervisor support on three aspects of burnout: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and lack of personal accomplishment. In particular, the authors argue that different sources of social support at work can influence these three aspects of burnout differently. Data collected from personnel at a university in South Texas was used to test the authors’ hypotheses. The results from partial least square regression show that coworker support strongly and negatively associates with emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, while supervisor support strongly and negatively associates with lack of personal accomplishment.

Recruiting Older Workers: Realities And Needs Of The Future Workforce, Barbara L. Rau, Gary A. Adams
Management Faculty Research and Publications
This chapter examines literature pertaining to the recruitment of older workers. It begins by addressing the question of relevance and why older worker recruitment matters. It then examines what is known about older workers, including their attitudes, motivations, and behaviors. Next the chapter addresses what employers are looking for in older workers and, more specifically, discusses the continuum of employers’ practices from those that aggressively try to attract and retain older workers and apply a conservation model of older worker management to those that apply a depreciation model and focus primarily on retrenchment and downsizing older employees. Finally, it addresses …

Access To Training And Development In Small And Medium-Sized Enterprises: Employee's Perspectives, Pattanee Susomrith, Alan J. Coetzer
Research outputs 2013
This paper provides an overview of a proposed study that aims to identify the perceived factors that prevent employees from initiating requests and participating in formal external employer-funded training and development opportunities within small and medium enterprises. While training and development has the potential to improve an employee's remuneration and increase their employability, the level of training and development in small and medium enterprises is well below that of larger organisations. Although the small business owners retain the final decision regarding employee access to training and development, the outcome is also dependent upon employees' decisions to intiate requests to participate …
Risk Blindness Among Temporary Migrant Workers In Australia, Susanne T. Bahn
Risk Blindness Among Temporary Migrant Workers In Australia, Susanne T. Bahn
Research outputs 2013
Workers can suffer from risk blindness in that they fail to recognise workplace hazards or their severity, thereby jeopardising their health and safety and their organisation’s performance. This problem is exacerbated in organisations who employ temporary migrant workers because not only do ‘home country’ cultural factors influence the way they understand and see risks; more critically the temporary nature of their work contract can reduce their commitment, and perceived responsibility, to acknowledge risk. The result of which could expose temporary migrant and domestic workers to increased incidents of work-related injury, disease and fatalities. This paper presents this problem through the …

Workers On Temporary 457 Visas: Challenges They Face When Working In The Western Australian Resources Sector, Susanne T. Bahn, Llandis G. Barratt-Pugh, Ghialy Choy Lee Yap
Research outputs 2013
As a response to the shortage of specialised workers in the Western Australian (WA) resources sector, business has resorted to employing workers on temporary 457 visas. This paper provides an insight into some of the challenges workers on 457 visas reported while working in Australia in a study that collected data in 2012. While the study focussed on costs and benefits of employing workers on 457 visas to business, the migrant worker and the larger Australian community, part of the data included the social and financial costs to these workers. It is this data that is reported in this paper. …

An Exploratory Study Of Factors Influencing The Participation In Training And Development Of Engineers In Small Businesses, Pattanee Susomrith, Alan J. Coetzer
Research outputs 2013
The provision of workforce training and development (T&D) has the potential to provide benefits to both employers and employees. However, employees in small businesses receive less access to T&D than employees in large businesses. Prior research into reasons for the relatively low levels of employee participation in formal T&D in small businesses has typically involved surveys of owner-manager opinions regarding ‘barriers’ to T&D. This study explored factors influencing employee participation in T&D from the perspective of employees. Data were collected through semistructured interviews with 15 employees in small engineering businesses. Consistent with the main aim of exploratory research, the study …

Generational Differences And Fly-In-Fly-Out (Fifo) Employee Turnover, Pattanee Susomrith, Alan R. Brown, Glenda B. Scott, Helen B. Sitlington
Research outputs 2013
Fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) mining has experienced significant growth in the past decade and is now a typical form of employment in the sector in Australia. Evidence suggests that there are relatively high turnover levels amongst these employees. Whilst there are many contributing causes to this, there may be variances between different generational cohorts at work as arguably their workplace expectation differs. This paper investigates whether turnover intentions vary between different generations of employees. Using a questionnaire, employees were asked about their turnover intentions and this was compared against the groups of Baby Boomers, Generation X and Generation Y. Findings show …

Using Research Informed Approaches To Strategic Hrm Teaching, Alan J. Coetzer, Helen B. Sitlington
Research outputs 2013
This paper outlines research that was guided by the broad question: What teaching and learning (T&L) strategies should be employed in SHRM? This question was answered using data gathered in three focus groups involving T&L specialists, business strategy and HRM academics, and HRM practitioners. Through a process of successive focusing, potential T&L strategies were initially identified and then tested and refined in the focus groups. Drawing on literature and input from the participants, we contend that SHRM can be effectively taught through a combination of primarily problem-based and case-based approaches. We also argue that process worksheets are an effective method …
Telework: The Role Of Social Support, Heather Dawson-Howard, Peter P. Standen, Maryam Omari
Telework: The Role Of Social Support, Heather Dawson-Howard, Peter P. Standen, Maryam Omari
Research outputs 2013
Telework is a rapidly growing work practice but its effects on employees’ psychological wellbeing have been little studied. A particular problem for remote workers is the potential loss of social support. Much research shows support from supervisors and co-workers increases employee wellbeing and reduces the negative effects of job demands. How telemediated social support functions in telework, and how much home-based support can replace it, have not so far been studied. A framework for research on social support in telework is presented in this paper. Social support can be provided electronically but how affects workers’ wellbeing and performance is an …

Human Resource Planning: Sector Specific Considerations, Adnan S. Al Wahshi, Maryam Omari, Rowena Barrett
Research outputs 2013
The aim of human resource planning (HRP) is to have the right people in the right place at the right time. While the public sector has moved from a civil service to a human resources paradigm, the literature indicates a lack of successful HRP implementation in this sector. This paper explores key issues around HRP in the public sector. Evidence suggests that effective HRP is critical to meeting internal and external organisational challenges, however, relevant processes and practices do not seem to be strategic or integrated in the public sector. If not addressed, the absence of HRP in the public …

Could On-The-Job Embeddedness Help Bind Fifo Workers To Their Jobs?, Glenda B. Scott, Helen B. Sitlington, Pattanee Susomrith, Alan R. Brown
Research outputs 2013
Fly-In Fly-Out (FIFO) employees in the mining industry in Western Australia have had high levels of turnover, resulting in high costs in recruitment, training and lost production. This research is seeking to understand the reasons for high turnover in this somewhat unusual group of employees. Whilst the research has utilised the more traditional approach to understanding labour turnover, that is that dissatisfaction with job or company and the availability of viable alternatives lead to intention to quit, preliminary results indicate that job embeddedness theory, may provide a better understanding of why FIFO workers choose to stay in their jobs. This …

Where Loyalties Lie: A Study Of Workplace Dissent Through The Lens Of Loyalty, Katelyn L. Santy
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This thesis studied organizational dissent through the lens of loyalty in order to examine the nuanced motivations of employees' choices to dissent. The goal of this work was to approach loyalty as a nuanced concept that provides a foundational motivation for employees' dissent. In order to understand the contextualized experience of dissent, I conducted individual interviews with 17 employees in the radiology department of a healthcare organization. I adopted a grounded theory approach to data analysis, yielding a series of major findings. First, participants described their loyalties in the workplace as multiple and involving four distinct dimensions: organizational loyalty, coworker …

Assessment Centers And The Measurement Of Personality, Neil D. Christiansen, Brian J. Hoffman, Filip Lievens, Andrew B. Speer
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Although personality constructs are now widely accepted as being important for understanding work behavior, self-report personality tests as a method of assessment are not without their critics (e.g., Morgeson et al., 2007). Whether misguided or not, concerns persist regarding the validity of these measures and the issue of applicant faking has yet to be fully resolved (Tett & Christiansen, 2007). Moreover, applicant reactions tend to be less favorable for personality inventories than many other assessments commonly used in employment settings (Hausknecht, Day, & Thomas, 2004). To some, self-report inventories may be a poor way to assess personality traits, and yet …

Practice Based Competency Development: A Study Of Resource Geologists And The Jorc Code System, Jacqueline Coombes
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The mining industry is a major contributor to the Australian economy. The value of mining and exploration shares traded on the Australian Stock Exchange are contingent on the estimates of mineral deposits, which are disclosed publically in accordance with a reporting code maintained by the Australasian Joint Ore Reserves Committee (the JORC Code). Expert resource geologists, known as Competent Persons, provide classified estimates of mineral endowment that underpin these public statements. The JORC Code requirements for qualifying as Competent Persons are membership of an approved professional association and a minimum of five years’ relevant experience. This research set out to …

Top Athlete Pay, Kevin F. Hallock
Top Athlete Pay, Kevin F. Hallock
Economics Faculty Publications
The US has a history of discussing the pay of the relatively well-paid. This is partly because pay levels of some are revealed publicly (e.g., CEOs of publicly traded companies). Americans are also characterized as being celebrity-obsessed. So discussing the pay of superstars seems inevitable. However, they do not have quality data on the compensation of the relatively highly paid in many organizations and professions. When the author speaks about compensation in front of large groups, someone (and in many cases, many people) gets incensed over what they term "outrageous" or "egregious" levels of executive compensation. Athletes are rarely mentioned. …
Lean And Mean: Workplace Culture And The Prevention Of Workplace Bullying, Andra Gumbus, Patricia Meglich
Lean And Mean: Workplace Culture And The Prevention Of Workplace Bullying, Andra Gumbus, Patricia Meglich
WCBT Faculty Publications
Workplace bullying has become a hot topic in the popular press as well as scholarly literature. Compared to targets of sexual harassment, bullied workers quit their jobs more often, are more unhappy, stressed at work, and less committed to the workplace. Little is done about it because there currently is no US law against bullying and often the only recourse for targets is to quit their jobs. We present a case study and then review various legal remedies and sample company policies to explore the actions organizations might take to eliminate this destructive workplace behavior.

The emerging economies of Asia are increasingly playing a critical role in the global arena, even as there is continuing turmoil and uncertainty in other parts of the world due to economic, financial and political upheavals. While Asian economies are undoubtedly impacted by global headwinds, most of them have been buffered by their sound economic and policy fundamentals, healthy domestic demand and continued inflow of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Meanwhile, Asia is undergoing its own transformation: many countries in Asia are experiencing greater economic prosperity and rising affluence, translating into higher demand for goods and services. As businesses flock to …
