Linked Into A Job?: The Ethical Considerations Of Recruiting Through Linkedin, Meghan E. Parez

Management

LinkedIn’s goal is to help business professionals meet, make business deals, inquire about jobs, and find careers through connections with people that members already know. This research study will investigate the ethical practices of LinkedIn recruitment. Students’ awareness of the methods for effective use, as well as the damaging elements of a LinkedIn profile will be examined. LinkedIn is an effective, helpful tool for recruiting candidates and for job searching; however, the best results will come to those who use LinkedIn professionally and with caution. Our findings indicate that despite its risks, jobseekers and employers can benefit from using LinkedIn.

Unique Factors For Motivating Engineers: A Motivation Meta Theory Approach, Kenneth R. Browne Jan 2013

Unique Factors For Motivating Engineers: A Motivation Meta Theory Approach, Kenneth R. Browne

Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)

According to the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee, the United States is not producing enough engineers to meet the growing needs of employers (as cited in Von Bergen, 2012). While engineers represent an important role in American industry, engineers are leaving the profession or are unsatisfied with their work (Stabbert, 2010) while engineer output per hour and per engineer is declining (Bureau of Labor and Statistics, 2012). As a potential remedy to this injurious industry trend, application of motivation theories can improve employee retention (Ramlall, 2004), detect and correct morale problems (Herzberg, 2003), detect an engineer's development needs (Shoura & …

New Silicon Valleys Or A New Species? Commoditization Of Knowledge Work And The Rise Of Knowledge Services Clusters, Stephan Manning

Management and Marketing Faculty Publication Series

This paper explores knowledge services clusters (KSCs) as a distinct and increasingly important form of geographic cluster, in particular in emerging economies: KSCs are defined as geographic concentrations of lower-cost skills serving global demand for increasingly commoditized knowledge services. Based on prior research on clusters and services offshoring, and data from the Offshoring Research Network (ORN), major properties and contingencies of KSC growth are discussed and compared with both high-tech clusters and low-cost manufacturing clusters. Special emphasis is put on the ambivalent effect of commoditization of knowledge work on KSC growth: It is proposed that KSCs attract most projects if …

The Teachers’ Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES) was utilized to measure the teachers in terms of their own reports of self efficacy. The School Improvement Model (SIM) of Iowa State University instruments were used to measure the students’ perceptions of teacher effectiveness. The Teacher Advancement Program …

The Power Of Affective Factors (Self-Efficacy, Motivation And Gender) To Predict Chemistry Achievement With The Benefits Of Knowledge Surveys On Metacognition Level, Xin Wu Jan 2013

The Power Of Affective Factors (Self-Efficacy, Motivation And Gender) To Predict Chemistry Achievement With The Benefits Of Knowledge Surveys On Metacognition Level, Xin Wu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Self-efficacy, gender, and motivation are subjective predictors of students' academic achievement. Self-assessment prompted by knowledge surveys involves metacognition, i.e., students' awareness of how they learn. Knowledge surveys can be used to measure changes in students' achievement level and to assist students in content review and inspire reflection on one's ability to learn. In this work, I combined the above predictors into the survey to determine whether achievement in general chemistry can be foreseen. My proposed research will be conducted on 426 students enrolled in General Chemistry I classes (Chemistry for science majors) during a regular 15-week semester at Louisiana State …

Patient To Agent: A Phenomenological Approach To Understanding Emergent Adult Women's Experiences Of Entering The Workforce, Kerry Akashian Jan 2013

Patient To Agent: A Phenomenological Approach To Understanding Emergent Adult Women's Experiences Of Entering The Workforce, Kerry Akashian

Educational Studies Dissertations

Although women are increasingly present in higher education institutions and in the workforce, and businesses led by women are thriving in the current economy, research indicates an increase in emerging adults who report experiencing excessive levels of stress and emotional conflict. This stress and conflict can contribute to the development of depression and anxiety, especially in the absence of adequate support systems. Frequent use of healthcare services, worker absenteeism, and the replacement of employees are three financial costs of stress on corporate employers. Although research on emerging adulthood supports the links between stress, emotional conflict, and support systems, less is …

Positive Workplace Dynamics: A Qualitative Exploration Of Exceptional Performance In Community College Units, R. Michael Stapleton

Theses and Dissertations--Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation

In this companion dissertation findings are reported of applied case study research on four community college organizational units that consistently meet or exceed standard performance measures. Ample prior evidence confirmed that performance extended significantly beyond what might be explained by available tangible resources alone. The case study contexts are common in higher education in general: a) an external partnership, (b) an ad hoc team, (c) a traditional, cross-divisional service unit, and (d) a grant-funded student service unit.

Emerging positive organizational theory and research shows promise for revealing performance-influencing phenomena and behaviors that are not adequately represented in standard measures. Therefore, …

Social Networks, Individual Orientations, And Employee Innovation Outcomes: A Multi-Theoretical Perspective, Travis J. Grosser Jan 2013

Social Networks, Individual Orientations, And Employee Innovation Outcomes: A Multi-Theoretical Perspective, Travis J. Grosser

Theses and Dissertations--Management

I examine individual innovation in organizations from a social network perspective. I employ two theoretical lenses to examine innovation outcomes in three separate empirical studies. First, I use a sociopolitical framework to examine how political skill and social network structure interact to predict successful innovation initiation and, ultimately, career success. I find that innovation initiation mediates the relationship between political skill and career success. Moreover, structural holes in employees’ social networks moderate the mediated relationship between political skill and career success such that the relationship is stronger for employees with many structural holes in their social network. Second, I use …

One hundred ninety-four study participants completed questionnaires providing quantitative measurements of the seven factors of servant leadership: (a) developing and empowering others, (b) humility, (c) authentic leadership, (d) open participatory leadership, (e) inspiring leadership, (f) visionary leadership, and (g) courageous leadership, …

An Exploration Of The Lived Experiences Of Returned Mormon Missionaries, Errol Douglas Bordelon Jan 2013

An Exploration Of The Lived Experiences Of Returned Mormon Missionaries, Errol Douglas Bordelon

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Mormon missionaries face numerous challenges throughout the course of their mission. They serve in multiple capacities; they provide numerous types of services; and they work an average of 12 hours a day, six days a week. Missionaries encounter nearly constant rejection and hostility. In most cases, these missionaries serve in areas that are unfamiliar to them and they have limited contact with their family and friends. Despite these challenges, most missionaries not only successfully complete their mission, but they also have a positive view of their mission. According to Bjorck and Kim (2009), not much research has been conducted in …
