JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 11, 2024)—Student pharmacists at East Tennessee State University Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy are helping remove outdated and unneeded prescription medications as part of an upcoming safe medication drop-off event on ETSU’s main campus on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The event takes place in parking lot 22a, which is the large lot next to the ETSU Parking Garage and near the Basler Center for Physical Activity. Turn onto Jack Vest Drive on main campus from either State of Franklin Road or J.L. Seehorn, Jr Road.

(Sept. 1, 2024)—ETSU Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy welcomes Dr. Shelby Brooks, from Asheville, North Carolina, who is serving as Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice. Her clinical interests include cardiology (specifically anticoagulation/antiplatelets, post stroke management, dyslipidemia, and coronary artery disease), cirrhosis management, and pharmacy resident training. 

Brooks graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy in 2019 then went on to complete a 24-month Pharmacotherapy Residency Program at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. During her time in residency, she focused on inpatient and outpatient family medicine practice, …

She is an Assistant Professor in Pharmacy Practice and in the Department of Family Medicine at James H. Quillen College of Medicine specializing in chronic disease state management and primary care.

(Sept. 1, 2024)—Dr. Alex Surbaugh, from Franklin, Tennessee, a clinical pharmacist in psychiatry, is serving as Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice.   

She previously came from the University of Kansas Health System, where she completed a PGY1 residency and a PGY2 psychiatric residency. Dr. Surbaugh completed her undergraduate degree in chemistry at the University of Mississippi and earned her PharmD at UT.

Diversity of personality type in the workplace can lead to improved morale and productivity when organizations acknowledge and support the attributes and differences of employee behaviors and characteristics. Black women executives identifying as introverted who lead with their authentic personas and intersected marginalized identities, benefit employers, employees, students, and the institution’s brand and bottom line. Introversion and extroversion, ways to describe diversity of personality type, and each having different connotations in office culture, are relevant to this exploration as literature suggests that the population of both personality types is almost evenly distributed. Job satisfaction (JS) undoubtedly impacts significantly on the productive capacity and general well-being of academic staff within universities. Poor JS affects not only individual performance but also broader institutional goals and may culminate in a decline in staff morale, disloyalty, constant labor migration and unending industrial actions by labor unions within the university. Enhancing job satisfaction can improve staff’s quality of service, staff retention, productivity, and the overall academic quality of the institutions. In my course, students practice entrepreneurship and innovation with emphasis on fostering creativity, creative problem solving, recognizing and developing opportunities, product design and development and analyzing alternative business models. The main deliverable for the course is an investor presentation pitch and a fully develop a business plan in the form of an investor pitch deck for a startup or social venture. The proposed project should add to the course depth and enhance students understanding of the course content.

Paycheck-To-Paycheck: How Public Service Loan Forgiveness Inhibits Generational Wealth Attainment For Black Women, Ashley Patrice-Rose Sherman

Black women who attend college in the United States are more likely to borrow to cover the cost of attendance and carry the largest amount of student loan debt than any other racial and gender group. Federal student loan borrowers are encouraged to work in public service to take advantage of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF), an income-driven repayment program established by the College Cost Reduction and Access Act (CCRAA) of 2007. PSLF offers total debt relief after ten years of uninterrupted full monthly payments based on an income-driven repayment plan. The significance of this qualitative study will …
