JOHNSON CITY – Children in grades K-6 are invited to attend the Renaissance Child Winter Enrichment for a festival of winter fun from Wednesday-Friday, Jan. 2-4, 2019.
This three-day camp is sponsored by the Office of Professional Development in East Tennessee State University’s School of Continuing Studies and Academic Outreach.
Campers will participate in a variety of holiday arts and crafts, games and winter fun enrichment activities. The camp includes a trip to Ober Gatlinburg on Thursday to see the holiday lights and to ice skate.

JOHNSON CITY – Two individuals with ties to East Tennessee State University are among the nominees for the 2019 Grammy Awards.
Dr. Ted Olson, a professor in the Department of Appalachian Studies, and co-producer Richard Martin received a nomination for Best Album Notes for “4 Banjo Songs, 1891-1897: Foundational Recordings of America’s Iconic Instrument” by the late Charles A. Asbury. This album features the first-ever release of minstrel-era banjo recordings, played by an African American veteran of the minstrel stage, and Olson says some of the recordings in this release are probably the oldest extant recordings of banjo music. …

JOHNSON CITY – During the past year, faculty members in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine were awarded $6.7 million in new extramural funding.
The grant proposals were funded by agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, American Heart Association, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and the Swiss National Science Foundation and will support research studies in the areas of heart disease, neurological and psychiatric diseases, infectious diseases and cancer.

JOHNSON CITY – Members of the East Tennessee State University Class of 1969 and Golden Fifties Club who are interested in serving as class reunion agents for the 2019 Spring Weekend are being sought by the ETSU National Alumni Association.

Morgan Munsey, a Church Hill native, is a senior computing major with a concentration in information technology who will graduate on Saturday, Dec. 15 (for complete information on ETSU's fall commencement ceremonies, visit https://bit.ly/2Er3J6u). This exploratory article reflects on the teaching experiences for a course on “Entrepreneurial Leadership in Ethnic Chinese Business” at the Singapore Management University (SMU). It was categorised as a mobile learning course with reference to the flipped classroom model, learner mobility, and user-generated content outside the classroom. We examine three examples of mobile learning projects which were assigned to students so that they would be able to internalise key course objectives such as gaining an appreciation of the structure, functions, and cultural uniqueness of traditional small Chinese business organisations in Singapore. JOHNSON CITY (Nov. 27, 2018) – The East Tennessee State University Percussion Ensemble will present its Fall Concert on Sunday, Dec. 2, at 5:30 p.m. in the Mathes Hall auditorium.
The ensemble will perform a variety of literature under the direction of Dr. Matthew Geiger and Logan Ball. The program features works by John Cage, Henry Cowell, Anders Åstrand and more contemporary composers.

JOHNSON CITY (Nov. 20, 2018) — A local legacy, the Clinchfield Railroad and its founder, George L. Carter, will be honored during Heritage Day on Saturday, Nov. 24, at East Tennessee State University’s Carter Railroad Museum.
The museum’s namesake was instrumental to the growth of the region and the university. Carter was most responsible for establishing the original Carolina, Clinchfield and Ohio Railway, now part of CSX. A well-known developer and land owner, Carter bequeathed his 120-acre farm and $100,000 toward the establishment of the East Tennessee State Normal School, which later became ETSU.

JOHNSON CITY (November 20, 2018) – For more than two years, Tema Stauffer captured images portraying the history of Hudson, New York. This fall, she is sharing her finished project with the public in her solo exhibition at East Tennessee State University.
Since she was a child, Stauffer gravitated toward literature and fine arts. During her childhood, she was a prolific reader and enjoyed writing. She also took many kinds of art classes at the Kalamazoo Art Institute. A class she took there during high school, however, marked the beginning of her exposure to photography.
