Exploring Alumni Valuation Of An Undergraduate Leadership Program, John D. Egan
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This study explored alumni’ valuation of an undergraduate leadership program by gaining an understanding of what leadership learning and leadership behaviors transferred into their work environments. The alumni graduated from the same university in the southeastern United States, and while enrolled completed a four-year, co-curricular leadership program. In this mixed methods study, eight participant alumni engaged in semi-structured interviews as well as completed the Leadership Practices Inventory. Alumni perceived that leadership experiences, learning community, classroom learning, peer coaching, and intentional reflection were the most valuable attributes of the program. The leadership learning that effectively transferred to work environments included collaboration, …

JOHNSON CITY (Dec. 20, 2018) – East Tennessee was once home to a stunning diversity of remarkable animals, including rhinos, tapirs, mastodons, alligators and more. Scientists know all of this thanks to the fossil-rich clays of the Gray Fossil Site, which preserve an ancient ecosystem that dates back around 5 million years. At that time, the site was a large pond surrounded by a lush forest. Now, East Tennessee State University scientists have found another animal to add to the picture of this ancient ecosystem: peccaries.

JOHNSON CITY (Dec. 19, 2018) – East Tennessee State University’s ROTC program has commissioned four cadets from the Buccaneer Battalion as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army.
Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Kathleen Gainey provided remarks at the commissioning ceremony held Friday. She served in the U.S. Army for 35 years and led a major strategic review and period of increasing forces in Afghanistan and decreasing forces in Iraq as deputy commander, U.S. Transportation Command. JOHNSON CITY (Dec. 19, 2018) – East Tennessee State University President Brian Noland has named Dr. Joe Bidwell and Dr. Janna L. Scarborough as Presidential Fellows for the spring 2019 semester.

This article delves into the breakdown of the impact globalization have on the success of minorities in urban centers. This study explores the shared challenges during the acculturation process of graduate student immigrants pursuing higher education in the United States. 13 graduate student immigrants at the University of San Francisco discuss their experiences of cultural adjustment into U.S. culture. Through qualitative interviews and thematic analysis, this study seeks to understand the acculturation experiences of graduate student immigrants in the San Francisco Bay Area of the United States. This analysis is based on the individual-level experience examining attitudes and acculturation strategies in the dominant society. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between engagement, job satisfaction, job burnout, and turnover intention as provided by higher education student services employees. This study addressed the gap in the literature: the lack of information regarding the experiences, attitudes, and perceptions of student services employees and examined the relationships among employee engagement, job satisfaction, job burnout, turnover intention by analyzing the responses received from members of the electronically mailed (e-mail) survey that contains a combination of three main survey instruments to review employee engagement, job burnout, job satisfaction, and turnover intention.

JOHNSON CITY (Dec. 5, 2018) — Area high school students participating in the Upward Bound program at East Tennessee State University will experience an enhanced science, technology, engineering and math curriculum thanks to a supplemental award from the U.S. Department of Education.
Upward Bound, a federally funded TRIO program aimed at increasing opportunities for high school students to attend college, submitted four STEM project proposals ranging from field trips to robotics courses. Each proposal received a one-time supplemental award of $40,000.

JOHNSON CITY – East Tennessee State University’s Center of Excellence for Appalachian Studies and Services (CASS) is marking the 40th anniversary of the founding of its Archives of Appalachia.
During the past four decades, the Archives of Appalachia has acquired a world-class repository of more than 800 collections, 84,000 sound recordings and nearly 8,000 moving images, making it one of the world’s leading regional archives.

Dr. Beth Anne Fox has been appointed Associate Dean of the Quillen College of Medicine and Chief of Staff for the Office of the Dean. She was named to the current role by Interim Dean of Medicine Dr. William A. Block.
Dr. Fox is a 1998 graduate of Quillen and she completed her family medicine residency at ETSU in 2000. She has served as a faculty member in the Department of Family Medicine for the past 15 years and currently holds the rank of Professor.
