Gender, Age, Class And Racial Stereotypes, And Power Relations In Television Ads: 2011-13 Vs 2021-22, Thomas D. Clark, Julie Stewart

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

This article demonstrates how faculty and DEI experts can use resources included in this paper to highlight how a range of stereotypes are created and reinforced in television ads, and it identifies several topics for future analysis. To understand how depictions of gender, class, age, and race intersect in 8 television ads featuring the relationship between the race of individuals depicted in romantic and platonic relationships this article examines 4 pairs of commercials from 2011-2013 and 2021-2022. Drawing on concepts of intercategorical complexity, it describes product, setting, characters and relationships to help gain a deeper understanding of how various stereotypes …

I conceived my book “Pity the Poor Reader” as an un-textbook, an irreverent “Elements of style.” Like Elements, it’s designed to complement textbooks. Pity is concise, memorable and portable. Under 300 pages, Pity serves as an aspiring writer’s keepsake. Concision lies at the heart of Pity. The key concepts of writing well are distilled into irreverent, memorable lines and axioms. Many of them are organized as lists that are easily printed and taped to a wall or a computer. Academic advisors in higher education serve as more than a resource for planning classes. These student affairs professionals also assist with success plans, identifying career paths, connecting students with relevant campus resources, and working through academic and personal concerns. Over time, the field of academic advising has transitioned from a prescriptive form of advising that consisted primarily of transactional interactions to a hybrid approach that incorporates developmental advising or helping to develop the whole student. The accountancy profession faces one of its most challenging periods as several factors converge to disrupt it. Technological advancements, the expanding role of accountants, declining student interest in accountancy, and increasing expectations for uniquely human capital all exert pressure on the profession to reinvent itself or face marginalisation. This study, funded by the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA), examines trends in the accountancy profession alongside accountancy education in Singapore. Its goal is to formulate a fit-for-purpose accountancy education for the new economy.
