Professor Dennis Tourish’s recent essay (AMLE, March 2020) provides an analysis of why business schools and management education are perceived to be in a state of crisis. This commentary focuses on one important aspect of Tourish’s criticism of the management education field; namely, the quality, value, and appropriateness of the field’s research in advancing knowledge. His main criticisms are that the failure of management research arises from its extremely strong focus on theory development, its inadequate writing, and the formulaic, template style and formal structure of research papers in leading journals. JOHNSON CITY (Updated May 29, 2020) – East Tennessee State University’s National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC) team headed to the national championship for the second time in three years.
The team won in the semi-finals on May 7 after winning first place in district 7 of the American Advertising Federation (AAF) competition sponsored by Adobe. JOHNSON CITY (May 28, 2020) – As the number of COVID-19 cases started rising in New York City earlier this year, two alumni of East Tennessee State University’s Cardiopulmonary Science Program, Rayford Johnson and Jessica Burleson, were among a group of respiratory therapists from across the country who decided they wanted to use their professional abilities to help.

JOHNSON CITY (May 27, 2020) – East Tennessee State University is among the 30 Best Colleges for Students with Learning Disabilities, a ranking published by College Consensus.
According to College Consensus, such “invisible disabilities” as ADHD, dyslexia and various forms of autism are prevalent on college campuses, and schools are tailoring programs to assist students who live with these challenges.

The Elijah Watt Sells Award program was established by the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) in 1923 to recognize outstanding performance on the CPA Exam. Elijah Watt Sells was one of the first CPAs in the U.S., was active in the establishment of the AICPA and played a large role advancing professional education within the profession.

JOHNSON CITY (May 26, 2020) – Alumni of East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine are on the front lines of research and studies happening across the world to develop treatments for the COVID-19 virus.
Dr. Davey Smith (’96) is leading a clinical trial that is currently underway to evaluate whether the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine, given with the antibiotic azithromycin, can prevent hospitalization and death from COVID-19.

JOHNSON CITY (May 22, 2020) – The George L. Carter Railroad Museum on the campus of East Tennessee State University has canceled the 5th Annual Big Train Show for the health and safety of patrons, vendors, and model railroad enthusiasts.

At this time, it is impossible to predict who will vote in November, but 52.8% of the eligible voting population in Tennessee cast a ballot in 2016, so turnout could be similar in 2020. JOHNSON CITY (May 18, 2020) – The ETSU Health Osteoporosis Center will offer free osteoporosis screenings every Thursday in June to support osteoporosis awareness in the community and in recognition of Osteoporosis Month, celebrated during May.
The free dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans will include one hip and the spine, with interpretation. This non-invasive test measures bone mineral density to assess its strength.
The ETSU Health Osteoporosis Center, located at 2109 W. Market St., Room 143, promotes research; provides diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive services; and facilitates educational opportunities for the public and health care professionals.

JOHNSON CITY (May 15, 2020) – Across the region resilient workers, makers and volunteers are dedicated to supplying the personal protective equipment health care professionals need to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. One such example is a regional effort underway to manufacture face shields.
