Research supervision is the highest level of teaching for academics. Yet, in many cases, academics are allocated supervision without any formal training. For many supervisors, their supervision approach will be a mirror of what they have experienced themselves at post-graduate levels. JOHNSON CITY (June 4, 2020) – The Gray Fossil Site of East Tennessee preserves the remains of mastodons, rhinos, rodents, trees and many more organisms that made their homes in this part of the world between 4.5 and 4.9 million years ago. JOHNSON CITY (June 3, 2020) – The Tennessee Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (TNAAP) is strongly encouraging families during the COVID-19 pandemic to contact their doctor’s office for newborn, child and adolescent medical and behavioral health care for appointments for urgent, preventive, chronic and specialty care issues.

ETSU Health Pediatrics has utilized rapid innovations and adjusted its clinical procedures so that patient visits can be conducted safely in the doctor’s office, through online telemedicine video or phone visits from the family’s home, or by combination. JOHNSON CITY (June 3, 2020) – East Tennessee State University’s Future Operations Workgroup, which was tasked with developing a plan for academics and services to return to campus, released its recommendations today for a phased return beginning this month.

The report includes a series of operational stages, 1-4, designed to address the need for loosening or restricting physical distancing measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. ETSU moved all of its teaching online and the majority of its employees have been working remotely since March. This was Stage 1 of the university’s plan.

JOHNSON CITY (June 2, 2020) – East Tennessee State University has named Michael Meit, a nationally respected leader in rural health, as the director of research and programs at the ETSU Center for Rural Health Research.

The purpose of this research study was to determine whether any significant differences existed between generational cohorts, gender and employment status, and reported levels of job satisfaction among faculty at institutions within the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU). This study aimed to influence institutional objectives and values to make any necessary adjustments in the attraction and retention of faculty members. The Academic Setting Evaluation Questionnaire (ASEQ) was used to survey participants. The data suggested factors that impact job satisfaction among faculty members within CCCU institutions are not those related to generational cohort, gender, or employment status. This study …

JOHNSON CITY – Picture a groundhog-sized animal with horns on its nose like a rhinoceros, and you have a pretty good idea of the new species of extinct rodent described in a recent paper in the Journal of Systematic Palaeontology. It is only the sixth species of “horned gopher” ever discovered, and it has allowed researchers to tackle some questions about why and how these little critters evolved horns.

This year marks the 155th anniversary of Juneteenth, an annual holiday observing the demise of slavery and marks the day June 19, 1865, when news of emancipation reached citizens in most remote parts of the former confederacy in Galveston, Texas. While President Abraham Lincoln liberated all Black Americans who resided in territory captured from the confederate army when he signed the Emancipation Proclamation into law on January 1, 1863, many Black (and some white citizens) in more rural and remote areas …

Dr. Brenda Louw, Chair of the Department Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology at East Tennessee State University, is stepping down as chair after 11 years in that position on July 31, 2020 to focus on her research and enjoy her teaching in the Speech-Language Pathology master’s program and in various personnel preparation grants.

Louw joined ETSU from the University of Pretoria, South Africa, where she was the Chair of the Department of Communication Pathology. She and her husband Jack, moved to Johnson City in 2009. They became U.S. citizens in 2016.

ETSU Health Internal Medicine held its 2020 graduation at the Veterans Administration campus Gazebo on Saturday, May 30.  Due to the current COVID-19 social distancing guidelines, the event was recorded for friends and family to view. 

Twenty-one residents completed their three-year program as required by the ACGME, which will allow these individuals to become Board Certified in Internal Medicine as a field of practice.  They may also continue their education through additional training fellowships within the areas of: cardiology, gastroenterology, rheumatology, endocrinology, oncology, infectious diseases and pulmonology.

JOHNSON CITY – Alumni of East Tennessee State University, current students curious about what the university was like in yesteryear, and other interested folks can now access several years’ worth of yearbooks thanks to the Archives of Appalachia in ETSU’s Center for Appalachian Studies and Services.

The Archives is in the ongoing process of digitizing all of the university’s yearbooks and making them available online.

Araminta Ray’s path to East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine took a 2,190.9-mile detour that required some of the same tools she has used as a medical student – resilience, perspective, and community.

Ray was accepted to Quillen in 2018.

“I don’t remember a time in my life when I didn’t want to become a doctor,” Ray said. “But I’ve also known I was going to hike the Appalachian Trail about as long as I’ve known I was going to be a doctor. It’s been a part of me and one of my lifelong goals for years.”

Entrepreneurship can be an important process and a vital component for building rural resiliency. As part of RISE29, a grant funded program, regional advisory councils have been established an act as a crucial extension tool for East Carolina University.
