JOHNSON CITY – East Tennessee State University student Jeremiah Heyward enjoyed what he said was a “surreal experience” earlier this year when he met with Vice President Kamala Harris at the White House.

Heyward was one of only a handful of people personally invited to Washington to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing young men of color as a new year begins.

“This was a surreal experience,” said Heyward. “I got to be in a place where so many great leaders have worked.”

JOHNSON CITY – Dr. Kevin Brooks wants to see “deeper, more meaningful relationships” continue to be established at East Tennessee State University.  

Appointed last fall as the director of the Mary V. Jordan Multicultural Center, he believes the center is uniquely positioned to help accomplish that goal.  

“The Multicultural Center creates programs, services and initiatives that bring people together so they can share and exchange their experiences,” he said.  

The center aims to help everyone, regardless of cultural background, feel included. Brooks also wants to see positive intercultural interaction and a broadening of cultural awareness at ETSU.

Because higher education creates more informed individuals, healthier citizens, social prestige, job satisfaction, and numerous other non-economic benefits, it is important that all members of society have opportunities for successful educational achievement. Using data for undergraduate students enrolled in a business college of a large Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), this study documents the existence of an unadjusted GPA gap between White students and ethnic minority students. This study also shows that the unadjusted GPA gaps decrease when socio-economic indicators are introduced in the analysis. JOHNSON CITY (Jan. 30, 2032) – During the COVID-19 pandemic, a group of graduate-level researchers at East Tennessee State University’s College of Public Health conducted a study to assess mask-wearing behaviors on the ETSU campus and the surrounding community.

The results of that study, “Mask Adherence to Mask Mandate: College Campus Versus the Surrounding Community,” were published online today in the Journal of Community Health.

The paper is a student-conducted research project overseen by research assistant professor Dr. Samuel Pettyjohn of the ETSU Center for Rural Health Research, located in the College of Public Health.

At a large, research-intensive, predominantly White university, in this qualitative case study, Black women faculty members’ experiences with and perceptions of institutionally sponsored faculty development activities in relation to career advancement was explored. The career advancement of faculty members from underrepresented and minoritized populations—particularly Black women—is ultimately impacted by the racialized and gendered disparities among tenure-track and tenured professors in research, service, and teaching. Critical thinking requires an individual to gather and interpret data, develop conclusions based upon relevant findings, and implement the best solution. The dynamic aviation industry requires these skills of its pilots, maintainers, and managers for companies to remain successful. Collegiate aviation programs need to teach critical thinking and cognitive skills to allow students entering the workforce to become these successful aviation managers, maintainers, and pilots.
