JOHNSON CITY (March 10, 2023) – “Appalachian Diseases of Despair,” a new report from the Appalachian Regional Commission co-authored by Michael Meit from the East Tennessee State University Center for Rural Health Research, finds that diseases of despair mortality had begun to decline between 2017 and 2018, but dramatically surged in 2020, likely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Between 2019 and 2020, the diseases of despair mortality rate increased by 24% in the Appalachian region and 20% in the non-Appalachian United States. In 2020, the rate was 37% higher in the Appalachian region than the rest of …

JOHNSON CITY (March 7, 2023) – East Tennessee State University launched its second cohort of the ETSU Mentored Substance Use Research (EMSUR) training program, designed to train substance use researchers across multiple disciplines in order to improve health outcomes in Central Appalachia.

A total of 14 ETSU graduate and undergraduate students were selected for the second cohort and are paired with a faculty mentor to train them in substance use research.

Drivers must consider other objects on the road, most commonly other vehicles and pedestrians. The MSU sheep flock is an Innovation Flock in the Sheep GEMS project through the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The Sheep GEMS project is a national, multi-breed project that is focused on evaluating different sheep breeds and their longevity in different climates. As a participant, we collect/send raw data that is compiled. Our preliminary data from the 2022 (Year 1) and 2023 (Year 2) lambing season has been included. We collected measurements from Katahdin ewes (n = 38; 1-4.5 years old). We measured fecal egg counts (FEC), FAMACHA scores, body condition scores (BCS), teat and udder scores. ETSU students chose a new ID card design last week through an online vote. Out of five options featuring campus and regional landmarks, students selected a design that combined both, with a silhouette of the ETSU Foundation Carillon in the foreground on the right, with the golden sun rising over blue mountains in the background.

Out of 3,052 total votes, the winning design received 1,221 votes, followed by the second-place design – an abstract depiction of the Southern Appalachian mountains – with 828 votes.
