Meet this year’s recipient of the Dr. Brian Odle Scholarship, Morgan Thomas (’23), from Johnson City, Tennessee. 
 
Dr. Brian Odle, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice, came to ETSU Gatton College of Pharmacy in 2007. His unique teaching style combined memorable storytelling with practical knowledge. Dr. Odle was loved by his students, as well as faculty and staff. While Thomas didn’t get the opportunity to meet Dr. Odle in person before his passing on Feb. 15, 2021, she was able to interact with him over Zoom as a student in one of the last classes he taught at the college, which …

The purpose of this study is to build upon previous literature on the stages of career preparation of college student-athletes by examining identity, role engulfment, and psychological well-being as it relates to preparation for ‘post-playing days’ life. More specifically, the authors endeavored to examine the relationship between role engulfment and psychological well-being and how it affects post-athletic career transitions. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 16 former Division I college football student-athletes who were previously student-athletes at 14 different Division I institutions. Perceived Effectiveness Of Study Skills Training For Division Iii College Athletes: A Pilot Program, Jill W. Lassiter, Amanda L. Campbell

Journal of Athlete Development and Experience

College athletes experience high levels of stress and academics is one of the primary causes. This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of a study skills training workshop designed around the theory of Multiple Intelligences. The pilot-workshop was developed with minimal resources, tailored to college athletes, and focused on helping them adopt personally meaningful active study strategies. An inductive, naturalistic evaluation approach was used to analyze the qualitative responses of 55 athletes who participated in the workshop. Only a small percentage of collegiate athletes compete at the professional level of sport after they graduate, leaving most athletes to transition out of a life involved in sport. Research reviewing life after competitive sport for college athletes and the consequences associated with such a transition is plentiful, however, additional research also argues that life transition research is necessary to maximize the understanding of such a phenomenon. A case study approach used Schlossberg’s Theory of Transition (2011) to research recently retired collegiate college athletes and their time transitioning away from competitive college sports. Factors That Led To Crossing The Picket-Line: An Autoethnography Of A Faculty Striker, Giovanna Follo

Historically, academic strikes are not frequent and are short. Much of the research examines why academic strikes occur; however, few explore the individual multidimensional striker. The research question in this autoethnographic essay explored, “What factors led me, a pro-union advocate, to cross the picket line?” Crossing the picket meant going back to work before the strike was declared over. The self-reflexive narrative examines several themes, including the mental health burden of anxiety and stress, the place of coercive power used when the administration pursues extreme threats, the role that unions play in setting up expectations at the outset of a …

In a conversation with Joe Berry and Helena Worthen, authors of the recent book, Power despite precarity, Gary Rhoades explores the basic themes of this historical case study of the California Faculty Association in relation to contingent faculty and the larger contingent faculty labor movement. The conversation, like the book, centers on strategies for the contingent faculty labor movement, as the authors' intent is that it be a "channel of movement knowledge."

AAUP’s turn to collective bargaining grew out of a more expansive view of unionization than is typical for American labor unions. The mission of the AAUP incorporates addressing economic matters, as does the purpose of unions generally. But the AAUP adopted collective bargaining as a means of protecting and expanding the professional interests of the profession. This paper surveys the various approaches that AAUP chapters have used to accomplish the safeguarding and expansion of academic freedom.

In 2014, the author offered several critical observations and suggestions as possible guides for the National Center’s future role in public higher education. Eight years later, several merit repeating (and expanding), more forcefully than before, at a time when our public institutions are increasingly fragile and clearly confused about what their charter and role ought to be three years into a world-wide pandemic where everything is not quite as it was before.

What did your day look like on rotation?
My daily schedule was 8:30 - 5 pm. Each morning, we have a meeting with other staff members to discuss patients. Throughout the day, I work on admission and discharge documentation, counseling patients, medication reconciliations, audits, drug info questions, preparing for and attending meetings (there are several within a week), and more!
