Overseen by the Don Sundquist Center of Excellence in Paleontology at East Tennessee State University, the Gray Fossil Site and Museum has been a center of research and teaching for more than two decades, with scientists identifying dozens of extinct animal and plant species. And the last year has been an incredible one, with researchers discovering species ranging from large predators to tiny critters previously unknown to science.

(June 13, 2023) – Access ETSU, a program that has provided critical support to young adults with intellectual disabilities the past four years, has earned a sizable grant to continue its mission of serving the university and the region. 

The Tennessee Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities awarded East Tennessee State University a $400,000, three-year grant aimed at guiding students into competitive employment and independent living.

Jessica Potter, a child psychology major and Honors scholar, is studying Swahili in the East African country from mid-June through early August.

This qualitative phenomenological study explored the barriers accounting faculty face to incorporating more active and experiential learning into accounting education. Twelve accounting faculty from a variety of universities throughout the United States were interviewed, including those who are part of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) and whose business schools are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) or the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). These interviews revealed six significant barriers and 23 sub-barriers that prevent accounting faculty from incorporating more active and experiential learning into their classes. Dr. Nicholas E. Hagemeier, vice provost for research and chief research officer at East Tennessee State University (VPR/CRO), is one of eight research leaders from across the country selected for the Association of Public & Land Grant Universities’ (APLU) Research Leader Fellowship Program.

Hagemeier will join the sixth cohort of the program, which is sponsored by the APLU Council on Research (COR). Renee Williams' journey began when she and her two siblings were left on the steps of an orphanage in the late 1970s. Despite the challenges she faced growing up, Williams was determined to pursue higher education. Her quest to find her biological mom led her to the Appalachian Highlands and eventually to East Tennessee State University, where she began her journey as a first-generation college student.

But there are times life does not go as planned.

East Tennessee State University’s Dr. Aaron Polichnowski was recently awarded a $601,092 grant from the National Institutes of Health to research a possible link between blood vessel function and hypertension – particularly salt-sensitive hypertension.

Polichnowski, a professor in the Quillen College of Medicine’s Department of Biomedical Sciences and expert in renal hemodynamics (dynamics of blood flow in the kidneys), will conduct the study in partnership with Augusta University’s Dr. David Mattson. However, both accounting researchers and practitioners have observed a shortage of accounting professionals who currently possess the relevant technology skillsets to exploit technological advances. In response, the School of Accountancy of a Singapore-based university launched a second major program in Accounting Data and Analytics in 2018. In 2013, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) issued a paper that encouraged accountants to use their expertise and skills to “help an organization link sustainability activity to strategies using accounting measures, tools, theories, and techniques” AICPA (Oct. 2013 page 6). Later that same year, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) added “diversity, sustainable development, environmental sustainability, and other emerging corporate and social responsibility issues” to its accreditation standards for accounting programs AACSB (2013).
