Essays On Mergers And Acquisitions And Governance, Rwan Ibrahim Talib El-Khatib

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There is a recent strand of corporate finance literature that explores the impact of executives and directors' Social connections on firm value, performance, and governance. Those studies document that such Social connections could be beneficial when they enhance the sharing of information and knowledge, but could also be detrimental when associated with CEOs, as they could provide the CEO with a source of influence that makes her more entrenched and powerful.

In the first essay, I use four common measures of network centrality to compute the position of the CEO within the Social network of all executives and directors of …

Investors can take advantage of credit default swap volatility and movement in both sovereign credit and equity markets. In stable European countries, credit default swaps show little evidence of being the leading driver of sovereign bond and equity markets.

Personal Savings In The United States, Samanatha A. Marsh

Honors Theses

Over the past decade personal savings in America has been much lower than in the past. The question is why household savings is so much lower and what factors are contributing to the decline. To answer this question, I look at data collected from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The BLS has conducted a survey of consumer expenditures, or buying habits, since 1984. By using the BLS 2010 Consumer Expenditure Data, I can look at how different factors, such as income, age, family size and number of kids under the age of eighteen all effect household savings. Using the …

Honors Projects in Finance

Educational debt in the United States is a major concern as many young people enroll in undergraduate institutions beyond their financial means and the gap between the cost of an education and family income widens. This paper analyzes the relationship between the level of educational debt at graduation and time between graduation and home mortgage approval. This paper also examines the relationship between credit management behavior and mortgage …

Herding Evidence In Chinese Stock Market : A Study Of The Relationship Between Stock Price Index And Trading Volume Based On Behavioral Finance Theory, Xiaofeng Zhao

Lingnan Journal of Banking, Finance and Economics

Over the last couple decades, more evidence has been found supporting the notion that investors are not always rational. Herding behaviors have been observed in both the stock market crash1 and financial bubbles2, which were beyond the understanding of modern finance theory. In this paper, the herding phenomenon was explored in the Chinese stock market by the study of the relationship between stock prices and trading volume over the past 7 years. It was found that the change of price is statistically significant to have caused the change of trading volume, but the reverse is not true. Theoretically, this identifies …

The Uncovered Interest Rate Parity Failure From 2002 To 2005 : An Implicit Consensus Of Carry Trade, Yui Law

Lingnan Journal of Banking, Finance and Economics

There are many literatures devoted to the study of the uncovered interest parity (UIP); however, majority of them focus on whether UIP exists and only a few concentrate on the pattern of the UIP failure. By using a panel VAR approach, this paper compares the intensive carry trade period, between 2002 and 2005, and the pre-intensive carry trade period, between 1998 and 2001. The results show that during the intensive carry trade period UIP failure was caused by the self-fulfilling behaviour of investors. High interest rate currencies made investors believed that the currencies would appreciate and bided their price even …

Evidences Of High Sensitivity Of Investors To Financial News After Crises : Cases Study Of Asian Financial Crisis And Sub-Prime, Yui Law

Lingnan Journal of Banking, Finance and Economics

In the academic field of international stock market, some critics argue that, after having a global financial crisis, stock markets around the world will become more integrated. In fact, many researchers have put forward empirical works showing that the co-relation, or Granger-Causality, among different stock markets, strengthens comparatively at the post crisis period. This finding is rational; however, the explanation given for the increased co-movement after the crisis is not sufficient. The critics suggest that this increase is caused by the increase in international arbitrage activities and the higher degree of integration among markets. The Purpose of this paper is …

We examine the Singapore-US interest differential under the Singapore’s exchange-rate regimes during the Asian Financial Crisis (AFC), current Global Financial Crisis and none-crisis periods by using generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (GARCH) model. We hope that the good performance of Singapore’s …

A Multilevel Analysis Of Institutional Fiscal Autonomy And Its Effect On Affordability, Operating Efficiency, And Minority Access At Public Colleges And Universities, Christine J. Glass

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, an unstable funding environment for state higher education systems has led to a trend of increasing institutional fiscal autonomy in exchange for reductions in appropriations. With the growing concern that reducing state oversight will result in increased tuition and spending levels, this study was designed to provide a clearer understanding of how fiscal autonomy at public institutions impacts measures important to the state public policy goals of affordability, operating efficiency, and access. To accommodate the diversity and hierarchical structure of public institutions, this study used multilevel modeling techniques to integrate complex, interrelated institution- and state-level data. Shareholder Returns From Supplying Trade Credit, Matthew D. Hill, G. Wayne Kelly, G. Brandon Lockhart Apr 2012

Shareholder Returns From Supplying Trade Credit, Matthew D. Hill, G. Wayne Kelly, G. Brandon Lockhart

Department of Finance: Faculty Publications

We examine shareholder wealth implications of supplying financing to customers. Robust results demonstrate that excess returns and trade receivables are directly and significantly related. Further evidence indicates the value of receivables is higher for suppliers with stronger motives relating to operating and contracting costs. The results also suggest a discounted value of receivables for financially unconstrained firms. Overall, we conclude that investors recognize trade credit as an effective instrument in mitigating frictions hindering sales growth. Thus, certain suppliers are positioned to derive increased strategic benefits from credit policy.

MBA Faculty Conference Papers & Journal Articles

Institutes of higher education exist for the purpose of developing, fostering, nurturing, and stimulating the intellectual growth and development of students. These skills and knowledge translate into purposeful, real-life learning experiences. However, in the academic community, learning is not restricted to students. Faculty, too, must be supported and provided opportunities for personal and professional growth and development. Although professional development is not a novel concept in the education profession, schools often take up the gauntlet, but fall short …

In our increasingly global and technological world, one wrong click of the mouse in New York could affect the stock markets in London, Tokyo, and Brazil. Over the past decade, discussions of competition disparity in Major League Baseball have been brought to the forefront of many debates regarding the sport. This research will answer the pressing question, "What are the most significant factors that correlate to a Major League Baseball Team’s winning percentage?”. I used stepwise regression to identify factors significantly related to winning percentage. Interestingly enough, payroll is not a significant factor …
