JOHNSON CITY (Sept. 29, 2020) – Dr. Tosin Ariyo, a member of East Tennessee State University’s Center for Applied Research and Evaluation in Women’s Health (CARE Women’s Health), has been awarded a 2020 Changemakers in Family Planning grant from the Society for Family Planning.   

Ariyo is a community health scientist and women’s health advocate who is dedicated to addressing health disparities in underserved communities. She serves as research director in the Department of Health Services Management and Policy in the ETSU College of Public Health.

JOHNSON CITY – (Sept. 28, 2020) The 22 students who are part of the inaugural esports varsity team at East Tennessee State University were introduced on Friday, Sept. 25.

The two teams will compete in Overwatch® and League of Legends® and will participate in tournaments hosted by the National Association of Collegiate E-Sports (NACE).

Tryouts for the teams took place earlier this year, and nearly $20,000 in scholarship support has been provided to 14 eligible team members.

Higher education institutions are an established system for individual development and knowledge transfer. Recently, this system has come under pressure to implement additional oversight practices previously associated with business. These business practices, including centralization, are recognized as sources that include elements of work alienation (WA). This study investigated the impact of WA on the relationship between person-organization fit (POF) and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB), and sought to determine if a statistically significant relationship existed between these constructs. A body of research on instructors’ use of leadership behaviors in higher education teaching, often called instructor-leadership, is gaining momentum. Despite the field’s growth, the practical recommendations emerging from empirical investigations of instructor-leadership remain largely underdeveloped. In particular, the most popular practical implication – training and development of instructor-leadership – is given fleeting attention. JOHNSON CITY – (Sept. 25, 2020) As part of its continued emphasis on campus safety, East Tennessee State University will test its emergency mass notification systems on Thursday, Oct. 1, at 9:35 a.m.

The system includes an outdoor warning siren system with five large speakers strategically placed on the main campus and on the VA campus, an emergency text messaging and email service, an alert message on the ETSU homepage and a public address system in select university buildings.

JOHNSON CITY (Sept. 25, 2020) – Cory Whitfield, a graduate student in East Tennessee State University’s Master of Social Work Program, was recently elected to serve as the student representative on the National Association of Social Workers, Tennessee Chapter’s (NASW-TN) Board of Directors.

Launched this fall, the cohort was established to provide opportunities for professional growth in scholarship and research skills.  “One of our goals in creating this program was to help tenure-track faculty who are just getting started define their research agenda and acquire the resources they need,” said ETSU faculty member Dr. Trena Paulus.

The center is a multicultural facility focused on arts, education and community leadership.  The scholarship is named in memory of Michael Young, a member of the Langston High School Class of 1965 who was the last student to graduate from the school.  From 1893-1965, Langston was Johnson City’s school for African American students.  Young passed away April 4, 2020.
