JOHNSON CITY (March 19, 2021) – The Class of 2021 at East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine found out today where they were matched for their residencies upon their upcoming graduation.

Like many medical schools across the country, Quillen College of Medicine cancelled its in-person Match Day celebration held for students and their families due to the COVID-19 pandemic and hosted a virtual Match Day experience via Zoom, which friends and family could watch online.

KINGSPORT (March 19, 2021) – The Kingsport Alliance for Continued Learning (KACL) will offer a series of informal in-person and virtual class options beginning March 23 focusing on a variety of subjects such as state and county election processes, coal mining in Appalachia, an opportunity to go “behind the curtain” with Symphony of the Mountains and more.

JOHNSON CITY (March 19, 2021) – The nesting pair of American Bald Eagles that the East Tennessee State University Department of Biological Sciences has been livestreaming in Johnson City since 2015 was struck with a potential disaster late in the spring of 2020, when the male parent, Noshi, failed to return to his nest that held Shima and their three very large nestlings. Finding herself a single parent, Shima continued to bring fish to feed her young birds and successfully fledged them from the nest.

Leading Change: A Case Study Of A Transparent, Scaffolded Process For Rebalancing Workloads Across Liaisons, Carolyn Schubert

Campus and internal position reorganizations changes had created significant imbalances across workloads of liaison librarians. Some people were experiencing burnout, some were feeling unengaged due to underutilization. To build buy-in for the change process and ultimate change decisions, the interim Director developed a multi-step process for scaffolding change and creating transparency across the decision points. Working within the constraints of existing personnel, we had to be creative. The presentation will describe the techniques the interim Director used to identify the problem, facilitate open communication, and engage shared leadership to resolve the imbalances.

JOHNSON CITY (March 15, 2021) — East Tennessee State University Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy partnered with three area community pharmacies to hold a mass COVID-19 vaccination clinic at First Baptist Church in Greeneville, Tennessee, on Saturday, March 6, administering over 500 vaccines.

The independent community pharmacies included Atchley’s Drug Center, Corley’s Pharmacy and Corley’s Pharmacy Solutions, all located in the Greeneville area.

JOHNSON CITY – (March 10, 2021) A new student mentoring initiative that pairs students of color with an upperclassman mentor will launch this fall in the Clemmer College at East Tennessee State University.

The program, called STRIVE (Students Teaching and Representing Inclusive Values and Excellence), will be available to all students of color in the Clemmer College.  The program will match freshmen with sophomore, junior or senior students of color who will serve as a mentor for the next year. As the overrepresentation of Black male collegiate athletes (BMCA) increases in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I (DI) revenue-generating sports, coaches and athletic staff continue to overemphasize sport performance, while graduation rates for BMCA remain persistently lower than their peers and research continues to document transition out of sport concerns for this population. Proposing a multi-level approach, we explore the collegiate athletic factors that influence the holistic identity development of DI revenue generating BMCA at historically White institutions (HWIs) leading to difficulty transitioning out of sport. JOHNSON CITY (March 9, 2021) – More than 11,800 East Tennessee State University students are being notified this week they will be receiving financial assistance from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund II (HEERF II).  Approximately $5.5 million in HEERF II funding is being dispersed to eligible ETSU students.

This research paper explores issues pertaining to, and raises awareness about, high sugar intake among consumers, which causes several consequential health risks. The paper also points out various obstacles preventing consumers from reducing their high sugar consumption. These obstacles come from policymakers, policy influencers, the sugar industry, the food industry, and consumers themselves. For some obstacles, involvement of multiple parties was found. The research also discusses several possible solutions for improving a healthy consumption environment for consumer wellbeing.

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Improved eating behaviors and daily participation in physical activity such as swimming might abate the likelihood of African American youth becoming obese. Yet many African American youth neither consume the recommended daily servings of nutritious foods nor know how to swim. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of a culturally tailored multicomponent summer intervention to reduce obesity and unintentional drownings among underserved African American youth. Children (n = 145) participated in a three-hour, community-based intervention for four weeks.
