Group-Affiliated Firms And Audit Fees: Evidence From India, Mohinder Parkash, Rajeev Singhal, Yun Ellen Zhu
Group-Affiliated Firms And Audit Fees: Evidence From India, Mohinder Parkash, Rajeev Singhal, Yun Ellen Zhu
International Review of Business and Economics
This study analyzes the role of auditors and affiliation to a business group in corporate governance of firms by examining the audit fees charged to group-affiliated and independent firms. Agency problems in firms may be mitigated by the monitoring provided by controlling investors of firms affiliated to business groups. On the other hand, concentrated ownership may also result in higher agency costs because of inefficient profit distributions, tunneling, and complicated ownership structures. Audit fees are determined by the effort expended and the risks faced by auditors. We examine the relationship between audit fees and Group-affiliation for Indian firms. We find …

Lakhs of workers are dependent on the film industry for their living either directly or indirectly. Since no shooting is taking place for three months now, they are struggling a lot. The commendable gesture of star actors and the workers’ unions has helped to some extent. Even as these workers are being provided basic rations from the contributions, their requirements are far from being met. All the workers may not get their work back after the restrictions are lifted. Producers will definitely try to reduce the production cost, leading to the loss of jobs. The post COVID-19 film industry would …

Toshiba's Approach To Customer Value Design, Tatsuyuki Mikami
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
This paper describes the practice of "design thinking" in a Japanese company that tends to operate in an in-house-completed work context under a rigorously divided function-based vertical organization. In order to respond to significant shifts in the business environment accompanied by technological advances and changes in people's values, Toshiba introduced "Customer Value Design,” customized design thinking. Customer Value Design is characterized by "co-creation" of customers’ value with customers, "collaboration" in a Cross-Functional Team (CFT) of various experts transcending organizations and categories of expertise, and the "customer perspective" in co-creating experiential value, enterprise value, and social value. In order to compensate …

Age Discrimination And Academic Labor Markets, Sam Allgood
Department of Economics: Faculty Publications
In a sample of Canadian Ph.D.’s, Warman and Worswick (2010) report that forty-two percent obtained their degree at thirty-four years of age or older. One implication is that those starting their academic career vary in age. As a result, academic labor markets provide a somewhat unique way to investigate the outcomes of workers of different age with similar work experience. This study uses a national sample of over 9,000 faculty to look at the relationship between age at the time a person earns their degree and income. Older individuals are less likely to attend graduate programs in Carnegie Research I …

Zambia Social Science Journal
The study seeks to investigate the returns to technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in Zambia using the 2014 Labour Force Survey (LFS). We adopt the modified Mincerian model and the fixed effects approach. We find that individuals who possessed TVET skills with certification, regardless of their gender or their place of residence, significantly earned more than their counterparts in wage employment without any TVET skills. We also find that males with vocational skills with certification significantly earned more than their female counterparts with the same TVET skills with certification, a sign of labour market discriminatory bias by employers. …

Firm Age And Crude Oil Returns: Stock Price Sensitivity Of Oil-Producing And Consuming Companies, Hirofumi Nishi Ph.D.
Economics, Finance & Accounting Faculty Publications
This study aims to identify firm characteristics that affect the cross-firm variation in oil–stock interactions. A panel data analysis with a sample of U.S. and Canadian firms reveals that the stock price sensitivity to crude oil price returns is negatively and significantly associated with firm age. Contrary to a common belief, firm size or stock liquidity does not seem to influence heterogeneity in oil–stock relationships. My finding is consistent across oil-producing and consuming companies while the effect of firm age is not observed among financial institutions engaged in commodity trading. An additional test using the panel Granger causality approach shows …

An Exploratory Study On The Managerial Competencies Of First-Line Managers In A Philippine University, Alyssa Kaye S. Mojar, Dinah Pura T. Depositario
Journal of Economics, Management and Agricultural Development
Faculty and researchers, mostly well-trained, usually fill managerial positions at universities. Still, they do not have formal management training. This qualitative study examined the managerial competencies of 11 university firstline managers. Using Kurz and Bartram’s Great Eight Competency Theory (2002) for the thematic analysis of the interview transcripts, most of the respondents exhibited all eight competencies. However, they differed in terms of manifestations. A typology of academic administrators was developed based on the eight competencies, namely: (1) delegator, (2) accommodator, (3) director, and (4) initiator. Further quantitative research is recommended to refine this typology. Likewise, to develop current and potential …
The Influence Of Internal Audit Competency On Financial Reporting Quality And Enterprise Risk Management, Melissa E. Renschler
The Influence Of Internal Audit Competency On Financial Reporting Quality And Enterprise Risk Management, Melissa E. Renschler
2020
The internal audit function (IAF) is critically important to financial reporting quality and enterprise risk management (ERM). Following both the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 and the financial crisis of 2008, there have been improvements to other monitoring functions, such as the audit committee, management, and the external auditor, but regulation over the IAF is nearly absent. Further, our understanding of how IAF competency is developed and how IAF competency impacts both financial reporting quality and ERM outcomes is limited. My dissertation consists of three archival studies that investigate IAF competency using LinkedIn data. Taken together, these three studies contribute to …
On The Origin, Content, And Relevance Of The Market Failures Approach, Jeffrey Moriarty
On The Origin, Content, And Relevance Of The Market Failures Approach, Jeffrey Moriarty
Philosophy Faculty Publications
The view of business ethics that Christopher McMahon calls the “implicit morality of the market” and Joseph Heath calls the “market failures approach” has received a significant amount of recent attention. The idea of this view is that we can derive an ethics for market participants by thinking about the “point” of market activity, and asking what the world would have to be like for this point to be realized. While this view has been much-discussed, it is still not well-understood. This paper seeks to remedy this problem. I begin by showing, against some recent commentators, that McMahon’s view and …

Determinants Of Money Supply In Nigeria, Aderopo R. Adediyan
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
Studies on money supply determinants focus on the Classicists or Monetarists, Keynesians and post-Keynesians variables like income and money multiplier. This research extends the literature on money supply determinants to include the influence of financial liberalization on money supply with a reference to Nigeria between 1980 and 2019, using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach. Data used for the study were collected from the 2019 CBN Annual Statistical Bulletin. The study found that financial liberalization is an important factor in determining money supply in Nigeria, in addition to currency ratio, required reserve ratio and high-powered money. As a result, the …

Reducing Voluntary Employee Turnover In Supermarkets, Elena Wynn Cubillo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Supermarkets in the United States are experiencing losses in profitability due to an increase in voluntary employee turnover. Grounded in Herzberg’s two-factor theory of motivation, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore strategies supermarket managers use to reduce voluntary employee turnover. Participants were 5 supermarket managers in the Southeast United States who successfully reduced voluntary employee turnover. Participants responded to 7 open-ended, semistructured interview questions. A review of company documents and peer-reviewed journals supplemented the data collection. Thematic analysis was used to analyze data and 4 themes emerged: compensation, employee recognition, organizational culture, and empowerment. The …
