This paper investigates the relationship between the Paycheck Protec- tion Program (PPP) and real estate price increases. The Paycheck Protection Program was established by the Small Business Association in 2020 to pro- vide forgivable loans to businesses to aid with potential losses from COVID- 19 impacts. I leverage zip code level data across the United States and a fixed effects panel data model to quantitatively measure the PPP’s influence on housing and rental prices. The most recent addition to the workforce, the millennial generation cohort, presents a new set of challenges to leadership. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences related to the perception of commitment of millennial generation participants employed in the U.S. community banking sector. The conceptual framework included generational theory and organizational theory. Data were collected from 11 participants via semi-structed Zoom interviews. AbstractOvercrowding in emergency departments (EDs) is a systemic issue, resulting in inefficiencies affecting patient care quality. Hospital leaders struggle with reducing bottlenecks in EDs and providing a better patient care experience. Grounded in the general systems theory, the purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore strategies used to reduce inefficiencies in EDs. The participants included five directors, administrators, and clinical managers from a hospital ED in Idaho Falls, Idaho, who successfully used strategies to reduce inefficiencies in EDs. The COVID-19 pandemic unleashed shocks that triggered severe global economic contraction and spawned sizeable financial market fluctuations. This paper examines the dynamic connectedness between ASEAN stock markets and major global stock markets using the dynamic connectedness framework developed by Diebold and Yilmaz (2009, 2012). Empirical results reveal that ASEAN stock markets and other emerging markets have experienced higher spillovers from global equity markets during the pandemic than in normal times. In addition, the role of ASEAN region spillovers has increased significantly during the COVID-19 outbreak. We examine firms’ propensity to engage in innovation activities and the impact of innovation on firm-level productivity in the Philippine manufacturing firms using comprehensive firm-level data from the 2015 World Bank Enterprise Survey. We use two main specifications: the probit model to assess firms’ propensity to innovate, and endogenous switching regression to evaluate the impact of innovation on productivity and address endogeneity issues. Our empirical findings suggest that the propensity of firms to engage in innovation is low and negatively affected by R&D intensity and capital intensity. This paper investigates the extent to which a regulatory environment for R&D subsidies shapes the magnitude and direction of R&D subsidies set by a government and consequent innovation paths. When the WTO adopted a permissive regulatory environment, we find that the Korean government increased R&D subsidies significantly (89.21%) and selectively so for firms and industries with higher returns. Recipient firms conducted less basic research and more development research. Improvements in innovations were mostly incremental and minor. However, such changes did not persist once the WTO switched to a restrictive regulatory environment. Our findings show that the regulatory environment imposed by …

We construct a monthly presidential economic approval rating (PEAR) index from 1981 to 2019, by averaging ratings on the president’s handling of the economy across various national polls. In the cross-section, stocks with high betas to changes in the PEAR index significantly under-perform those with low betas by 1.00% per month in the future, on a risk-adjusted basis. The low PEAR beta premium persists up to one year, and is present in various sub-samples and even in other G7 countries. Based on a sample of 788 U.S. venture capital-backed IPO companies from 2006 to 2015, this research evaluates the impact of network centrality, venture capital (VC), and earnings management on the future profitability of VC-backed portfolio companies. The results suggest that companies backed by VCs with higher network centrality or that are “more centralized” are likely to have better future profitability after an IPO, even with the use of accrual-based earnings management.

We investigate whether firms engaging in corporate social responsibility (CSR) can preserve firm value during normal and unprecedented exogenous adverse events. Our evidence shows, in regular times, a negative relation between CSR engagement and firm value, but under adverse economic conditions, CSR protects firm value by decreasing firm risks. We also find that firms with high managerial attributes engage in greater CSR activities that benefit shareholders in both normal and aberrant financial times. The nonlinear relationship of pollution emissions with economic growth alongside energy consumption variables was examined to test the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis using a panel sample comprising 34 Asian economies from 2001 to 2013. Panel Autoregressive Distributed Lag models in the forms of Pooled Mean Group and Mean Group models were estimated and tested against one another using the Hausman test. For robustness checks, the same econometric techniques were applied to disaggregated panel groups based on income classifications. The study reveals that, while the EKC hypothesis holds in Asia, the findings were not robust across the disaggregated panel groups. …

This paper looked into the preferences of 151 coffee farmers for the attributes of selected coffee technologies. The study was done to help guide technology developers in crafting post harvest processing facilities for coffee which their target market will need which can lead to a higher probability of commercialization of new coffee technologies. The study examined the preferences for attributes for coffee dryers, moisture meters, coffee depulpers, and coffee sorters using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) framework. Halal has gained popularity as a result of consumer concerns about food safety and ethical issues. Chevon is an important source of protein. However, no halal chevon products are commercially produced. Hence, the study aimed to develop positioning strategies to commercialize the products. A survey was undertaken of 400 potential consumers in the Philippines. The majority of the respondents were willing to buy halal food products. Descriptive statistics were applied, and findings revealed that products were generally acceptable. Four wireless sensor network (WSN) technology packages developed for efficient irrigation water management in the Philippines were subjected to ex-ante cost-benefit analysis (CBA) to assess their financial viability. The WSN technologies include high-end and low-cost wireless sensors for upland crop production with drip irrigation system and lowland crop production with alternate wetting and drying (AWD). Results showed that the high-end WSN technology packages are only viable for high-value crops such as red onion, bell pepper, and hot pepper.
