Winner of the Louis B. Mayer Award, his diabolically clever play opened on Broadway in August of 1987 and starred Frank Langella as Holmes and Donal Donnelly as Watson. "Part spoof, part loving tribute and all fun..." --The Register, the play centers on a death threat against Sherlock Holmes by the supposed son of his name nemesis, Professor Moriarty. Oddly enough, however, Holmes is warned of the plot by Moriarty's daughter, to whom Holmes is strongly attracted. The plot then twists and turns until Holmes finds himself imprisoned in a dank cellar. The play mixes suspense and humor …

Jake's Women, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department

1995 Summer Theatre

Neil Simon's Jake's Women is about a novelist named Jake, who is struggling to save his marriage. During the course of the play, Jake talks to many women about their own perspective on his relationship, in an attempt to gain insight. Some of these women are real and some are hallucinations, as Jake suffers from psychosis. Jake's first wife, who was killed years earlier, is among the women he talks to in the play. This play is a comedy with a witty take on modern relationships.

Catnap Allegiance, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department

1994-1995 Season

Otterbein College Theatre will end its season with the world premiere of an original play. On May 24, Otterbein will open Catnap Allegiance by noted playwright Kia Corthron. With language that is sparse and poetic, Corthron’s plays are hard-hitting and unrelenting. Her plays address political issues, yet they also transcend the political and capture the essence of the human struggle. Catnap Allegiance protests the Gulf War with the story of several African American soldiers deposited in the middle of the desert, pumped full of inadequately explained medicines and ordered to “take no prisoners...eliminate and go.”

Sweet Charity follows the romantic trials and tribulations of Charity Hope Valentine, “a girl who wanted to be loved.” Charity is a taxi dancer, a dance partner-for-hire at a seedy dance hall in New York City. Lost in Yonkers tells the story of brothers Jay and Arty who are sent to live in Brooklyn with their relatives while their father goes off to work to pay off the medical bills of their recently deceased mother. Set in 1942, the play follows their new life and their attempt to acquire (through various means) the money their father needs to bring him back.

On a frosty May morning while the cherry trees are in bloom, impoverished Russian aristocrat, Mrs. Ranevsky, returns to her decaying ancestral home with her daughter, Anya. Her financial crisis forces the family to auction off their estate, including their beloved cherry orchard. Androcles is a slave who is abused by his master, Pantalone. Androcles is trying to help two young lovers , Isabella and Lelio. In order to make sure that his niece will not run off with her boyfriend, Pantalone hires the Captain to guard her. Androcles outwits the Captain and helps the lovers to elope. In the forest, Androcles encounters the Lion who is limping from a thorn in its paw. Androcles does the good deed of removing the thorn and is rewarded by the Lion's help in escaping his master.

True West follows the story of two estranged brothers, Austin and Lee. Austin is has a successful budding career in the film industry. He offers to housesit for his mother, and decides to work on a new screenplay while he has some peace and quiet. Lee, an alcoholic and a thief, unexpectedly shows up and proceeds to disrupt Austin’s life, eventually managing to take over the writing of the screenplay himself. The two brothers end up in a role-reversal, with each admitting that he has always envied the other's way of life.

Neil Simon’s classic comedy opens as a group of the guys are in the midst of their weekly poker game in the apartment of divorced sportswriter, Oscar Madison. And if the mess is any indication, it's no wonder that his wife left him. The apartment is smoke-filled, and the only thing Oscar can offer his guests is warm Coke and moldy sandwiches. Frederick Knott's thriller is the story of Susy Hendrix, a recently blinded housewife who unwittingly possesses a doll filled with illicit drugs. Harry Roat, a brutal and sophisticated criminal, coerces two small-time thugs into helping him con Susy into giving up the doll. A battle of wits ensues as Susy and the young girl upstairs launch a counterplot against the thieves. The drama plays on the themes of darkness and light as Susy navigates through her sightless world, and the crooks signal each other with light through the Venetian blinds.

The Brothers Karamazov is about a murder, and a complex discussion of faith, doubt, and morality. It begins with the father, Fyodor Karamazov. Fyodor is a cruel and lustful man who has fathered three sons: Dmitri, a man driven by his passions; Ivan, a man driven by his intellect; and Alexei, also called Aloysha, who is driven by his faith in Christ.
