Launching through the Surf Traveling Exhibit

McMinnville and other Yamhill County cities have had a close association with Pacific City and the dory fleet since the late 1800s. Panel 16 is the second of two panels that chronicle the individuals who have forged those ties. The panel features photographs taken as part of the Launching through the Surf project.

Launching through the Surf Traveling Exhibit

Like many fishing communities, the Pacific City dory community honors its fleet, asks for bountiful and safe fishing for the coming season, and remembers those who have died during the year at the annual Blessing of the Fleet. The ceremony is held on the beach the first Saturday in June. In a similar vein, the community celebrates the dories and honors those who made significant contributions to the fleet and the community during the Memorial Wall Ceremony. This observance normally takes place during Dory Days. Panel 13 describes both of these events.

Panel 12 details the intriguing processes of launching and landing a dory in the surf, including a brief description of the important skill of reading the waves. The panel incorporates contemporary photographs by Tyrone Marshall and Laura Davis, quotations from dory fishers interviewed as part of the project, and an excerpt from a 1997 Oregonian article.

Exhibit panel 11 describes the procedure for turning oars for a dory. Partners Paul Hanneman and Terry Learned have crafted the Cape Kiwanda Wood Products dory oars since the early 1960s. During the spring of 2012, project collaborator Tyrone Marshall photographed the process.

This project represents a practical investigation into using original underscore in the modern theatrical experience. Over 40 minutes of cinematic, orchestral underscore were composed by the author specifically for Hamline University Theatre Department’s 2014 production of Macbeth. Using electronic scoring methods and digital playback strategies, the music was “performed” with variable timing that was able to directly match the performance of the actor’s for each show. The accompanying written musicological analysis explores the score’s uses of themes, spotting strategies, and integration of the show’s artistic concept. The analysis, in conjunction with the recorded score, demonstrates a cohesive effort to …

Abuse Of Evidence In Persuasive Speaking: An Un-Conventional Solution, Amy Mendes

National Forensic Journal

Scholars in the forensics community have been lamenting the misuse and abuse of evidence in forensics competition for decades. Beginning with Frank’s 1983 discussion of evidentiary abuse in Persuasive speaking, authors have offered possible solutions to end the problem. However, as the ongoing focus might suggest, these solutions have not had the intended effect. In this paper, we continue the investigation into evidence use in Persuasive speaking by repeating Frank’s original study but offer an unusual solution that may finally effectively address the problem.

Direction Of The Play: Buried Child, Kevin Wayne Loomer

This project entailed the selection, background research and documentation, casting, direction, and post-production analysis of Walla Walla Community College's production of Sam Shepard's Buried Child. Documentation included research and analysis of the play and an evaluation of the play as a production vehicle for the Department of Theatre Arts at Central Washington University. The analysis also includes a discussion as to the directorial vision of this production.

This project entailed the selection, background research and documentation, casting, direction, vocal coaching and post-production analysis of Theresa Pohlhaus' production of Seussical, produced at Milburn Stone Theatre. Documentation included research and analysis of the play, its music, and an evaluation of the play as a production vehicle for Milburn Stone Theatre in North East, Maryland. The analysis also includes a discussion as to the directorial vision of this production.

In Spectacles of Reform Amy Hughes advocates for “spectacle as methodology” (4), a means of interpreting spectacle in nineteenth-century melodrama, as well as a wide variety of other media, that rehearses and reforms concepts of citizenship and identity related to race, class, gender, and morality. Through this lens, Hughes seeks to answer the questions “where and how do activist spectacles appear before and beyond the theatrical encounter?” and “why is spectacle kept alive through reinvention, revision, and repetition long after the drama is over?” (5). Moving Wheels and Heels is a Dance Therapy workshop in White Planes, New York for adults with physical and/or cognitive disabilities. Following a daily schedule, the dancers led by Sabatino Verlezza, Barbara Verlezza, and Nancy Lushington take part in May O'Donnell dance technique classes and choreograph themed pieces for the final performance at the end of the week-long workshop. One of the participants is a dancer with Down syndrome and inspired further research into the benefits of dancing for persons with Down syndrome. Dance as a form of therapy for older patients (70+ years old) offers a unique solution to the discrepancy between the mind and body that we see in the aging process. Though loss of muscle mass in aging is not a necessary part of aging, it can lead to inactivity in aging adults. Inactivity due to limited range of motion in older patients can result in negative feelings of self-worth. Emmanuel Levinas’s ideas about intersubjectivity can change our reading of Shakespeare by putting philosophical pressure on Shakespeare’s dramatization of human relatedness in The Tragedy of King Lear (1607–8). Even though Levinas does not discuss Lear at length in any of his published work, this difficult philosopher and this difficult play have much to say to one another. Levinas can be fruitfully brought to bear on Shakespeare’s great tragedy, generating fresh and productive ideas about its most pivotal moments, its most perplexing questions, and its most popular interpretations. This study situates The Weir and Shining City by Conor McPherson as embodying elements of Dionysian aesthetics as elucidated by Friedrich Nietzsche. Working through the lenses of Samuel Beckett’s linguistic philosophy and the premium of theater as established by Nietzsche, Artaud, and Brecht, the aim of this paper is to demonstrate how McPherson pierces the boundaries of language in drama by establishing his audience as chorus. Background information on Nietzsche’s The Birth of Tragedy and McPherson’s own comments on the plays are included with the research on the plays themselves. In fall 2013, playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney (THE ’03) was awarded a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship—the so-called genius grant. At only 33, McCraney has already made a substantial mark. He is an ensemble member of Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company, a resident playwright at New Dramatists in New York, and a member of Teo Castellanos D-Projects in his native Miami. Formerly an International Writer in Residence for the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), he is now an associate artist working on “Antony and Cleopatra,” an RSC coproduction with New York’s Public Theatre and Miami’s Gable Stage.

This text is a record of the preparation and rehearsal of a kabuki-inspired production of Madame de Sade by Yukio Mishima in an English translation by Donald Keene. The goals of this production were both artistic and pedagogical. I applied my knowledge of Japanese theatre and skills in directing skills in a new way to create a work of theatre with a cross-cultural aesthetic appropriate to both the play and the audience. The purpose of this study is to see, through a raw collection of data, how the family is currently being portrayed on social networking sites. Twitter is used to examine the social construction of family based upon observing tweets that contain #family. This paper argues that the family is best understood as being constructed through interactions with others, using symbolic interaction theory for theoretical grounding. Through examining over 1,000 tweets using a grounded theory methodological approach, three main themes emerged: family types, statements of family, and the esoteric family. The emergent themes suggest several implications, including that the family is …
