Witness for the Prosecution tells the story of a trial of a man named Leonard Vole for the murder of a wealthy older woman who made him her principle heir. During the trial his wife, Romaine, comes to testify not in his defense, but on the side of the prosecution.

Given the history of colonization and commodification in Hawai`i, it is no surprise that non-traditional performances are met with critical reception. However, in this thesis, I hope to destabilize the popular binary juxtaposition of authentic Hawaiian art and (mis)appropriated tourist kitsch. I argue that hula has been Orientalized and wrongly associated with religion not only by colonizers and the tourist industry, but also by those whose response to colonization is a call for purity and authenticity in the practice of Hawaiian culture. I am specifically referring to people who romanticize and mythologize hula and Hawai`i prior to European contact. Therefore, …

Piracy, Slavery, And Assimilation: Women In Early Modern Captivity Literature, David C. Moberly

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This thesis examines a hitherto neglected body of works featuring female characters enslaved in Islamicate lands. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, many Englishmen and women were taken captive by pirates and enslaved in what is now the Middle East and North Africa. Several writers of the time created narratives and dramas about the experiences of such captives. Recent scholarship has brought to light many of these works and pointed out their importance in establishing what was still a young, unsure, and developing English identity in this early period. Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer Center

The Journey Out is a play, taken from the words and stories of older members of the LGBTQ community here in Rhode Island, as captured in a series of oral history interviews this past year. The play – set in a disco, a church and an AIDS support group – is a celebration of love, of faith, of courage – of women and men who fought and struggled for their right to live openly, to live without shame, to live authentically. This post contains the press release and photos as part of the URI GLBTIQQ Symposium.

This report details the development and construction of an LED spotlight useable in a theatrical or architectural setting.  In depth background information, initial design concepts, lighting instrument specifications, assembly, testing, and conclusions from results are highlighted in this document.  Project goals include efforts to support more energy efficient lighting in the arts and general lighting applications and a decrease in overall costs for energy used in all dramatic and architectural lighting applications.

Sensemaking And Relational Consequences Of Peer Co-Worker Deception, Erin M. Bryant, Patricia M. Sias

Human Communication and Theatre Faculty Research

This exploratory study examined sensemaking of peer co-worker deception from the perception of the deceived. A total of 58 narrative accounts of deception were collected via face-to-face interviews with 23 employed adults. Analysis revealed four primary narratives of co-worker deception: corrupt system narratives, "cover your ass" (CYA) narratives, personal gain narratives, and personality trait narratives. Perceived motives and consequences were primary considerations in the sensemaking process and employees reported changing their communication patterns to avoid deceptive co-workers or hold them more accountable for their actions. The theoretical and practical implications of these results are discussed and suggestions for future research …

Does Ladysmith Black Mambazo send chills up your spine? Paul Simon’s album Graceland brought South Africa’s musical roots to Western pop culture. And it was Athol Fugard who exposed its dramatic wisdom. Now comes another South African auteur taking the pulse of her country’s complex social reality. Robyn Orlin is known for work that can be subversive, outrageous, provocatively humorous, and visually arresting. From her early days as a choreographer during the Apartheid era, Orlin has made a career of confronting taboo subjects with a heightened, vaudevillian theatricality that aims to test and redefine ideas about South African performance.

What do you consider barrier busting? In taking stock of chamber music in America, use the striking career of Imani Winds as your benchmark. Conventional chamber music was jolted out of its safe haven when this Grammy-nominated ensemble brought its eclectic style to the f ield. To illustrate Imani’s commitment to extending the European canon, the group invited Simon Shaheen, the acclaimed Palestinian óud and violin artist, to compose Zafir (“a gentle breath”).
