In this thesis, I intend to present an original costume design for John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. This production is the first full collaboration of its kind between Virginia Commonwealth University’s Theatre Department and Barksdale Theatre. This thesis will be a complete account of my entire design process from the design concept to the finished, realized production. I will be examining my design choices and finished production photos, including color photographs of my original renderings, fabric swatches and research. This thesis is the culmination of my scenic design work for William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of King Lear in the Howell Theatre at the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Within this paper I will look at the processes used to create the set design, the execution of the set design and the final product when seen in a fully realized production.

“Tartuffe: The Costume Design Process” is a paper that describes the conceptualization, creation, and critique of the costume design chosen for the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film’s production of Tartuffe during the spring semester of 2010. The conceptualization process included meetings with the director, historical research of France during the 1660s, and consideration of the play’s specific needs. The rough sketches and finalized renderings, along with the historical research, are featured within the thesis. The concept of chance utilized by John Cage is a frightening, exciting, and liberating process for any artist. It was so effective that other musical artists such as Morton Feldman, Earle Brown and Christian Wolff used it. In the world of theatre these concepts are constantly used today by the Neo-Futurists in Chicago and New York in their production of Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind and by Improv Troupes throughout the country.

Because Shakespeare holds such a prominent position in English-speaking world culture, it is important to open and expand access to understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of Shakespeare to a constituency as wide-ranging as possible. To achieve this goal, Service-Learning students in ENGL 345 – Shakespeare’s Tragedies and Histories in Spring 2010 partnered with Lowell Elementary School for a fun and educational after-school program Over six weeks undergraduates in ENGL 345 taught a group of fourth through sixth graders about Shakespeare primarily through directing the elementary-school students in a shortened version of The Tempest

2010 Spring Semester

When Samuel Beckett wrote his tragicomedy Waiting for Godot in France, the French nation was in turmoil due to the destructiveness of World War II. One generation later, an American named Tom Stoppard also wrote a play, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, during a time of crisis; the United States was in utter confusion because of the Vietnam War. Both of these plays, as a result of the tumultuous times in which they were created, demonstrated how confusion in one’s surroundings can cause a loss of certainty and identity.
