Synopsis: In October 1998 in the middle of the prairie outside Laramie, Wyoming, Matthew Shepard, a 21 year old student at the University of Wyoming, was tied to a fence post, severely beaten, robbed, , tortured and left, alone, to die. His body -- battered, bloody, barely clinging to life -- was discovered eighteen hours later. He was rushed to the hospital and put on life support. He died five days later. The reason for this brutal crime? Matthew Shepard was gay.

This thesis production includes pre-production research and documentation, auditions, casting of actors, direction, and post-production evaluation of The Dalles High School's winter production of "Little Shop of Horrors." This documentation also includes analysis of the play and its origins, evaluation of the play as a production vehicle, the history of the play, research of the playwright, lyricist, and composer, and the vision the director anticipates for the production.

Steel Magnolias, by Robert Harling, is a poignant tragicomedy set in the fictional town of Chinquapin, Louisiana from 1983 to 1985. The play's setting is a beauty salon that serves as psychiatrist's office, confessional and home away from home for several women of the town. This play reflects the strong sisterhood needed by women as they struggle through life's tragedies and rejoice during life's triumphs. The play presents characters that learn to grow stronger as they face each new obstacle. They are able to persevere because of the strong community of women to which they belong.

The Works Of Giuseppe Verdi: A Consideration Of Its Impact, Linda B. Fairtile

The rationale for preparing a critical edition of Verdi's works is by now well known. The unavailability of printed orchestral scores for some operas, disagreements among performing materials for others, and a proliferation of new scholarship illuminating the complex Verdian source situation all point to the need for a scholarly edition of the complete works of this extremely popular composer. In 1983 the University of Chicago Press and Casa Ricordi began jointly producing scores and other performing materials in a series entitled «The Works of Giuseppe Verdi» («WGV»). This project is a handbook of techniques and strategies for beginning directors of high school drama programs. Included in this handbook are sections on selecting the best productions for your actors, strategies for directing the young actor, helpful hints on how to build a successful extra-curricular drama program, and more. This project was based on a review ofliterature (including extant curriculum guides and articles and textbooks on directing and acting) and the author's fifteen years experience as an actor, director, and theatre arts educator.

Two basic types of dance are performed in this Iranian cultural sphere, and in the Middle East generally. The first is regional folk dancing, most often (but not exclusively) performed in groups. The second is solo improvised dance (sometimes referred to as majilesi 'social' or 'party'). This second form often evokes a strongly negative reaction, reflected, now as in the past, in attempts to ban public performances of solo improvised dance and to marginalize professional performers. People in this area of the world sometimes seem to have what I call a "choreophobic" mentality; yet the same people who might condemn …

This project discusses the problem of eating disorders in dancers. The development of eating disorders can be attributed to sociocultural development, and psychological factors. Dance places an emphasis on thinness, and the pressure to obtain ideal standards of thinness appear to be particularly salient in the development of eating disorders in dancers.

In an era of collective entertainment, before private home entertainment systems, people sought amusement within their communities. One aspect of this community entertainment, the theater, offered a social gathering place. Theaters provided an important dual role for the community—both for entertainment and also a certain amount of public service. Theaters in the 1920s and 1930s, in small towns such as Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, served a much different purpose than they do today, with a more prominent and more important role within society. “The Memory and The Legacy: The Whittlin' Whistlin' Brigade–The Young Company 1974-2001,” is a history of the children's theatre of Brigham Young University. The Whittlin' Whistlin' Brigade–The Young Company acts as a training ground for graduate students working in theatre for young audiences. When directing a production for the Whittlin' Whistlin' Brigade–The Young Company, students are instructed to perform all functions required of a professional company. As the Whittlin' Whistlin' Brigade–The Young Company (WWB–TYC) spends much of its performance time on tour, those responsibilities are relegated to the student.

At first glance, Shakespeare's controversial battle-of-the-sexes play The Taming of the Shrew appears to be the story of a vile-tempered woman who is taken on as a challenge by a man who then 'tames' her into becoming a docile wife by subjecting her to a number of harsh experiences. In actual fact, however, the play is more than a simple far-fetched farce or comedy despite the undeniable fact that it is both funny as well as farcical. Although exceedingly entertaining in terms of both slapstick humour and witty repartee, the play has depths of meaning not at once apparent to …

This dissertation addresses the problem of the denigration of the voice in poststructural theory and contemporary performance criticism. The problem has antecedents in twentieth-century language philosophy. Saussure defines language as a compendium of arbitrary words recognized according to the degrees of phonetic difference between them. Since for Saussure the arbitrary words of language also designate arbitrary concepts, he concludes that the sounds of words cannot be thought constituent of their sense. After Saussure, structuralism dislodges the voice from its privileged position in the phonologic discourses of Western thought. Poststructuralism views meaning as a product of socially constructed language systems, and …

Neo-Onnagata: Professional Cross-dressed Actors and Their Roles on the Contemporary Japanese Stage explores the representation of male and female gender in the contemporary Japanese theatre. I particularly discuss a specialized subset of Japanese actor: the neo-onnagata, a contemporary theatre counterpart to Japan's highly stylized classical kabuki tradition of cross-dressed representation. This dissertation represents my attempt to provide these basic aims: to situate the contemporary Japanese cross-dresser in Japanese tradition, to show how cross-dressing acts as a sharp social commentary and mirror, and to introduce some little-represented cross-dressing actors of the contemporary Japanese stage to the academic community at large.
