The goal of this project was to produce a short film on 35mm while providing practical field research opportunities for many students in the Media Arts program, including myself. I was initially responsible for writing and directing the film, but also ended up producing the film as well. There were many expectations that were fulfilled and there were also many expectations that changed during pre-production along with unexpected challenges that occurred during production.

This project was divided into two areas of emphasis: first, a research project examining the possibilities that the Book of Esther was written and included in the Bible as a dramatic performance text, and second, the development of a script based on the Book of Esther. Summary Of Research And Writing The Screenplay “Cora Chattering” Based On Terrie Petree’S Award-Winning Short Story “Eating The Old Thoughts”, Ethan L. Vincent, Stan Ferguson

Research and writing “Cora Chattering” was an interesting process. Terrie Petree’s seven page short story “Eating the Old Thoughts” offered enough material for a 21 page script, translating into approximately 20 minutes screen time – the ideal length for a student short film. Although the script diverts somewhat from Terrie Petree’s original story, these necessary changes made the characters and their relationships to each other more animated and accessible. As a result, I learned a great deal about the compromises of short story adaptations.

The goal of my project, funded by the ORCA grant, was to produce a short motion picture film entitled Of Separation. In the beginning I had only a script written, that I submitted to ORCA, from which I was to make the film. I also had a Theater and Media Arts Capstone class in which to workshop this script. Now, at the end of the eight months during which I have workshopped and researched this project, the original goal has changed and I have had a successful and worthwhile ORCA experience.

I am so glad that I was given an ORCA grant because it gave me an opportunity to create a very original and new piece of film within our film department. The film, which is still finishing in its post-production stage with visual effects, became much more of a learning project then I expected. As we attempted to put together this film, we encountered numerous problems that none of us as students at first knew how to conquer, but through research and a lot of effort we were able to make our deadlines and get it shot.

The current age brings with it a wealth of adaptations and evolutions in film-making, most stemming from new digital methods which slowly supplant the time-honored celluloid. I chose to focus in my research at the changing world of digital imaging acquisition and one of its primary shortcomings. The public's perception of war is influenced by every media story they see, every account they read, and every story they hear. News telecasts and newspapers tend to lean towards a focus of the grand narratives of war such as political involvement and overarching strategy. Two years ago, I came across an essay written by my great-grandfather, Albert Hulet. The short, two-page document, entitled “I Remember,” is a reflective piece written from a vantage point high in the Tetons. In the essay, Albert reflects as an old man, looking down the drainages surrounding him, describing the experiences he had in each canyon as a boy herding sheep in that area, and expounding on how those experiences shaped him into the man he became.

Writing the web series Alabaster Sky was a process of daily adaptation. From viewing every web series and documentary-style movie we could get our hands on, to inventing a method of structuring serial fiction that’s non-linear, this project tested us daily. The success of the production itself is yet to be determined, but the writing process can be considered successful in its attempt to test the limits of new media. The most significant area of work in the writing process was marrying the series’ documentary style with a non-linear structure.

She helped her husband, William Miller, who is sometimes referred to as a “Bogus Brigham”1 and her father, Aaron Johnson, to found the city of Springville and get the education system in Provo started. This project set out to explore, identify, and harness strategy and implementation of social marketing for low-budget and student film online distribution. Taking from previous examples and small-scale testing, a lot has been learned. The biggest lesson learned? Just how much my student colleagues and I underestimated the vastness of social marketing. The growing world of social media has been constantly expanding, and the rules change every day. As such, our project has had to adapt, and deadlines were pushed back, to accommodate for all of the new information we have gathered.

We traveled to France and interviewed many people, learning a great deal about what happiness means to people from this country. Cross-casting in performances has effected outrage and social dilemmas in audiences, despite the important cultural messages those characters display. Since its beginning as a play, women have been cast as the young boy Peter in Peter Pan. J.M. Barrie wrote Peter Pan through inspiration from the young deaths of his brother and childhood friend, who will always remain in their youth. In order to capture that youthful innocence, females have been cast as Peter. This choice in casting was also made to achieve androgyny and transcend gender by blurring gender lines.

Current Utah State Core Standards for Theatre require that theatre history be taught at levels II (Standard 3 Objective C), III (Standard 4 Objective D), and IV (Standard 4 Objectives A and D) of high school drama classes. However, a 2011 survey of Utah high school theatre teachers indicates that only 54% include theatre history as an "important" or "very important" part of their curriculum, while another 36% say they "touch on it." This thesis is designed to be a resource for secondary drama teachers in integrating theatre history pedagogy into their drama classes, in an engaging and performance-based manner …

The core of House M.D. is its assertion that current Western civilization lives in a perpetual state of dissonance: we desire to have the rawness of emotion but we can only handle this rawness when we combine it with intellect, even if that intellect lies to us. This is the ontological paradox that the televisual text grapples with. Teaching Artists are an important component of the Utah Shakespearean Festival's Education Department's outreach touring program that visits K-12 schools throughout Utah each year. However, the Education Department could be using Teaching Artists in different and better ways to help K-12 teachers infuse theatre into their curriculum. This work looks carefully at the outreach offered by the Utah Shakespearean Festival's Education Department and then compares it to the outreach work being done by the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and Shakespeare Santa Cruz. This qualitative research project describes the experiences of students in BYU's Hands on a Camera Project as they were introduced to co-learning pedagogies. Hands on a Camera is a media literacy service-learning project where university students are placed in public schools to teach K-12 students documentary production and media literacy. The project consists of a preparation phase and a teaching phase. In the research project, students were required to complete peer-learning and peer-teaching assignments during the preparation phase as in order to prepare for the teaching phase.
