This special issue explores the methodological affordances of the fields of affect theory and the history of emotions in the study of women’s writing from the early modern period, the long eighteenth century and the Romantic period. Commedia dell’Arte, a form of improvisational comedy for the stage developed in the Renaissance, is at least half a millennium old, and leaves minimal records of its content. However, its stock characters still seem to appear in modern media, including television, movies, and current theatre. Commedia characters' noticeable persistence in the modern day suggests that our culture continues to enforce social dynamics which have elements in common with sixteenth-century Italy. This thesis compares Commedia stock characters with their counterparts in modern media, to learn what cultural analysis can be made from their similarities and differences. This thesis examines the role of the fight choreographer in the theatre while addressing the potential issues staged violence has in distracting an audience from the intended narrative of the play. Avoiding the instruction manual approach of stage combat in favor of expounding on the theory of violent entertainment, I have constructed a thesis that informs the reader of certain types of violence found in both classical and modern productions and have researched the psychological ramifications of violent spectatorship and the necessity for content acknowledgements as well as consideration for the performer’s well-being. This thesis qualifies and documents a new genre of interdisciplinary, interactive theatre called Dodgeballs and Dragons. It covers a brief history of Dungeons and Dragons and Theatre of the Oppressed (the two foundational works for the new genre) as well as previous uses of D&D as a form of theatrical entertainment. After establishing the precedence used to create this product, the rest of the thesis breaks down how to write, lead, and play these shows on a regular basis. The document culminates in collected data providing concrete evidence for the future of the form and its many applications.

A Burlesque: The Shimmer Manuscript is a hybrid critical–creative work that examines burlesque as an embodied methodology and a mode of knowledge production. Drawing from my two decades as a performer–scholar, the work reframes glamour, desire, and adornment as epistemological practices rather than theatrical ornamentation. The project is significant in that it expands understandings of performance studies, autotheory, and feminist aesthetics by foregrounding the performer’s body as an intelligent, sensing, world-making apparatus.

The current study investigates the relationship between noun classes and plant folk taxonomy in Chasu (G 22). The study focuses on two objectives: the first objective is to describe the plant folk taxonomy in Chasu and the second objective is to determine the relationship between noun classes and plant folk taxonomy in Chasu. Data were collected from rural villages in Same and Mwanga districts by using free listing, field interviews (jungle-walk-and-identify), and written texts containing Chasu plant names. This essay is an exploration of the play The Glass Menagerie, by Tennessee Williams, through a feminist lens that offers a new interpretation of the famous play, supported by evidence from Williams’s own personal history, feminist interpretations of Williams’s work, and the discussion of what a protagonist really is. I argue that Tom, who is traditionally considered the protagonist, operates as an unreliable narrator and, therefore, the antagonist to Amanda and his sister Laura, impeding their happiness and sense of well-being. This dissertation proposes an expansive, interspecies definition of performance that uses behavior rather than cognition as the decisive feature and illustrates how such a definition can reshape our approach to theatre and performance history. Using the concept of responsivity, which refers to the embodied and affective ways that humans and non-human animals acknowledge and react to one another, I trace human–animal interactions across a variety of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century performance genres, from the aristocratic stag hunt and entertainments involving trained animals to the plays of Molière and Shakespeare. David Byrne is a multimedia artist known primarily as the lead singer and main songwriter for the new wave band Talking Heads. Throughout Byrne’s career he has continually written about America and Americans. This thesis traces his writings about America from the beginning of Talking Heads to his most recent projects. In doing so, the thesis puts forward that Byrne’s opinion on America has changed from one that is centered on the American people to one that is instead focused on American institutions. This culminated in their expulsion from England in 1290, but although they had no legal standing in the country, antisemitism ran rampant in their absence. This project analyzes elements of performative Modern Paganism and Wiccan rituals used by the Women’s International Terrorist Conspiracy from Hell (WITCH) group to determine how these performance practices can provide comfort and agency to those who have been systemically oppressed, particularly women in the United States. The project will focus on WITCH’s activist work, especially during the second wave feminist movement of the 1960-1970s, which used elements of Modern Paganism for social justice purposes by implementing them through guerilla theatre and zap actions. The purpose of this study is to analyze the Medea character as a liminal figure. Taking a metaphorical approach to Victor Turner’s ideas on liminality, this study will deconstruct different binary oppositions—villain/victim, agent/object, Dionysian/Apollonian. The Medea character does not fall neatly to one side of these binary oppositions; therefore, this thesis argues that Medea instead inhabits the space between the binary oppositions in the realm of the liminal. The thesis then analyzes the same binary oppositions within a survey of theatrical and non-theatrical texts that feature characters that embody archetypes that originated within the Medea character—the she-devil, the murderous mother, …

งานวิจัยเรื่อง การสร้างบทบรรยายเสียงสำหรับผู้พิการทางการเห็นในการแสดงสด : กรณีศึกษาละครเวทีเรื่อง หลง แตก สูญ ของ นิกร แซ่ตั้ง มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อสร้างบทบรรยายเสียงสำหรับผู้พิการทางการเห็นในการแสดงสด : กรณีศึกษาละครเวทีเรื่อง หลง แตก สูญ ของ นิกร แซ่ตั้ง ที่เพิ่มโอกาสในการสื่อสารเนื้อเรื่องได้อย่างชัดเจน และลดข้อจำกัดในการเข้าถึงศิลปการแสดงสำหรับผู้พิการทางการเห็น โดยมุ่งเน้นการศึกษาผลลัพธ์จากการใช้งานบทบรรยายเสียง (Audio Narration) จริงในสถานการณ์การแสดงสด โดยวัดผลในด้าน 1) ระดับความเข้าใจเนื้อเรื่อง 2) ความพึงพอใจต่อประสบการณ์การชม และ 3) การมีส่วนร่วมทางอารมณ์เพื่อนำไปใช้ในการพัฒนาและปรับปรุงเทคนิคการสร้างบทบรรยายเสียง การวิจัยนี้มีวิธีการดําเนินงานวิจัยจากการศึกษา และวิเคราะห์เอกสาร การสัมภาษณ์ และประสบการณ์ เป็นการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ ผลการวิจัยพบว่า จากการทดลองโดยใช้วิธีการหรือแนวคิดทฤษฎีการเข้าถึงสื่อและหลักการออกแบบสากล (Universal Design for Learning: UDL) ร่วมกับการสร้างบทบรรยายเสียงสำหรับผู้พิการทางการเห็นในการแสดงสดช่วยลดข้อจำกัดในการเข้าถึงศิลปะการแสดงโดยการถ่ายทอดองค์ประกอบบนเวทีอย่างครบถ้วน ทั้งบุคลิกลักษณะ กริยา ท่าทางของตัวละคร ภาพฉาก การเคลื่อนไหว สัญลักษณ์และเทคนิคการการแสดงในละครเวทีรวมถึงการใช้เทคโนโลยีบรรยายสด ซึ่งทำให้ผู้พิการทางการเห็นสามารถเข้าใจแก่นเรื่องและนัยยะสำคัญของการแสดงได้อย่างชัดเจน และได้รับประสบการณ์การชมที่ครบถ้วนทั้งทางศิลปะและอารมณ์ใกล้เคียงกับผู้ชมทั่วไปคำสำคัญ : บทบรรยายเสียง, ผู้พิการทางการเห็น, การแสดงสด, ละครเวที
