For quite some time I have been puzzled by the role of genetics in explaining both human characteristics and behavior. This curiosity led to several odd occupations for a philosopher/ editor. With a biochemist, I team-teach an honors course in genetics, and recently I became a faculty member and administrator in a college of medicine as well as a professor of pediatrics in a hospital-clinic research institution. These are not positions usually open to editors or philosophers, and one might wonder how they came about.

The strength of Brooks's friendship pervades his letters published in Cleanth Brooks and Robert Penn Warren: A Literary Correspondence. Just as obvious is the strength of Warren's attachment to Brooks. Throughout these letters, extending from 1933 to 1988, mostly concerned with literary and professional matters, a tone of respectful deference obtains, but breaking through that tone quite often are glimpses of their heartfelt affection for one another. The present thesis examines the rhetorical dimensions of the speech presented by Sunoco, inc. Chairman and Executive Officer before the World Fuels Conference held in Washington DC, October 23, 1997. The focus of the thesis is to examine the effectiveness of the speech. Principles of rhetoric were explained and applied to evaluate the effectiveness of the speech as a means of persuasion. The rhetorical analysis of the speech illustrates how language can be used as a symbolic means of inducing cooperation from individuals.

For years, the voice of the Chicana has been silenced by oppression. Anglos, Mexicans, and Chicanos have intentionally created such an oppression upon Chicanas that they were never allowed to tell stories of their own ideas, fears, and dreams. They were merely meant to be a voiceless servant to the male gender.
