One of the great advantages of the web is that there's a bunch of free stuff-that's the truism, anyway. But free stuff comes from somewhere, and it is rarely, if ever, free to produce. I am interested in exploring some of the costs of digital work, using as an example The Walt Whitman Hypertext Archive, a project I co-direct with Ed Folsom Since 1995, many people, myself included, have described our site as free, yet a considerable amount of resources continue to go into its making. I want to explore that conundrum.

Hypertextile Scholarship: Digitally Editing The Bayeux Tapestry, Martin Kennedy Foys

The dilemma of studying the Tapestry is twofold. In traditional editions of the textile, the discursive limits of the printed page require either a sacrifice of narrative fluidity for detailed resolution, or the converse. Put another way, in a printed edition, "readers" of the Tapestry either are given the document in gloriously detailed, high-resolution plates that fragment the textile's continuity, or are faced with small-scale reproductions that capture large narrative blocks but lack any comprehensive magnified detail. Additionally, since its rediscovery in the 1720s and like any complex and canonical narrative expression, the Tapestry has generated hundreds of scholarly books …

I am a curator, but some of my best friends are editors. I mostly edit myself. My collecting responsibilities cover roughly four thousand years of written history, so sometimes my focus is a little blurry. My own training harks back to the McKerrow-Greg-Bowers school of textual editing, but none of these three great editors prepared me for the challenge of handling thousands of papyri.

Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) painted more self-portraits than did any other American artist of his generation. Between the outset of his career in the 1760s and his death in 1827, Peale depicted himself no fewer than twenty times. He cast himself in oil paints, clay, and wax; in miniature, half-length, and life-size; alone, with family, and with strangers; and as a soldier, husband, father, scientist, and painter. dearly, autobiography held an abiding interest for Peale. Robert Allen Rutland, professor emeritus at the University of Virginia and research professor of history at the University of Tulsa, died at his home in Tulsa on 30 December 2000 at the age of seventy-eight. He made original contributions in several fields-in early American politics, the Constitution, and documentary editing. As a mentor he inspired and encouraged his colleagues, particularly those who worked with him on the Papers of James Madison.

In 1799, Georgia made the earliest attempt of any state to obtain copies of its colonial records from Europe. The history of its subsequent efforts to obtain and publish this earliest documentation well represents the problems and attempted solutions made by the many other such projects in the two centuries that followed. After all of the efforts to make its colonial records accessible, the state still does not have . a complete and credible publication of these records, and this goal remains elusive.

At its November 14, 2000, meeting, the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) recommended grants totaling up to $3.8 million for 47 projects. The Commission described competition for funding as "fierce," with requests under consideration at this meeting exceeding $8 million. While reaffirmning its support for the Founding Era documentary editions, the Commission noted a substantial increase in the number and quality of grant proposals in the State Board and Electronic Records Programs. The Commission was able to maintain last year's level of funding for the Founding Era documentary editing projects. However, the NHPRC Fellowship Programs in Archival Administration …

The story is familiar and well told: the FBI and CIA were put to political use in 1972 by President Richard Nixon (at the suggestion of Senator Strom Thurmond) to safeguard Nixon's reelection. While deciding upon an appropriate topic for this address, I realized that like athletes who head to Disneyland, I, after this big game, wanted most of all to take the next train back to the nineteenth century. So, to celebrate the end of my presidential term, I will start that return journey, speaking about the friendship between Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, or more precisely, about the intersection of this friendship with documentary scholarship.
