The finances of the Association for Documentary Editing are sound. 91 There has been a decrease in the general budget of $377, giving us unrestricted assets totaling $59,706. This year's slight reduction is mitigated by the large increase from last year ($7,401), and that large overage partly explains the present showing. A portion of the money for last year's conference in Washington, D.C., was received before the fiscal year began, so those monies were reported for the year in which they were received rather than across two years. Charles W. Polzer, S.J., died in Los Gatos, CA on Tuesday, November 4, 2003, at age 72. Dr. Polzer was born in San Diego, where he attended St. Augustine High School. Upon graduation from Santa Clara University in 1952, he entered the Jesuit novitiate at Los Gatos, CA. His course of studies took him to St. Louis University, MO, and Alma College of Santa Clara University, in Los Gatos, CA. Following his ordination into the priesthood in Los Angeles in 1964, he undertook a period of post-ordination studies in Cordoba, Spain. From 1958 to 1961, while studying for the priesthood, …

Although there has been a great deal of discussion about preserving electronic documents, editors have given little thought to how these would be edited once preserved, and no one has yet proposed an edition of electronic correspondence. Many argue that "sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof," but I think we need to get our collective head out of the sand and grapple with the relevant issues. Toward that end, I offer a plan for an edition of the e-mail of Bill Gates. It is, at the moment, purely hypothetical, but that could change at any moment.

The first volume of the long-awaited Papers of James Monroe uses mostly ·1 newspaper accounts, supplemented with correspondence and a few memoirs, to record President Monroe's tour of the northern states in 1817, his short tour of the Chesapeake Bay region in 1818, and his tour of the southern and western states in 1819. According to the introduction, these tours were particularly important because they became political events that "allowed the president to take his ideas directly to the people" (xxvii) and thus contributed, somewhat contrary to Monroe's desire to unify the nation, to the emerging shift of American politics …

In evaluating personal correspondence, most editors must spend considerable time speculating on authorial intention and the responses of the women and men who were the intended audience for each letter. When sisters Catharine E. Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe published The American Woman's Home, or, Principles of Domestic Science; Being a Guide to the Formation and Maintenance of Economical, Healthful, Beautiful and Christian Homes in 1869 as both a textbook for girls' schools and a home reference work, the new book quickly became the standard in its field. It replaced, and drew heavily from, Catharine's earlier Treatise on Domestic Economy (1841). In addition, the sisters used material from columns written by Harriet, and in some instances copiously quoted male authorities on certain subjects. The result was not a book to …

The finances of the Association for Documentary Editing are sound. There has been an increase in the general budget of $7,401, a gain of 14 percent for the year, giving us unrestricted assets totaling $60,082. A portion of this increase is due to an overage of $1,535 from the 2001 annual conference in Raleigh. Most of the increase, however, is due to the generous contributions of our members who renewed their memberships at higher levels or made contributions to the association. We can thank our members for their generosity, which makes possible a sound financial situation. Moreover, in spite of …

The Wisconsin Historical Society, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) sponsor the annual Institute for the Editing of Historical Documents. Fondly called "Camp Edit," the 2003 Institute will be conducted from June 16 to 21, on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and will provide 15 to 18 interns with classroom instruction and hands-on experience in the techniques of documentary editing.

Carl Linnaeus, or Carl von Linne as he was called after his ennoblement in 1762, is Sweden's most famous scientist. Linnaeus is primarily known for having created the nomenclature for plants, published for the first time in Species plantarum in 1753. Born in 1707 in southern Sweden, he studied at the University of Lund and later at Uppsala where he became professor of medicine in 1741. Before his academic appointment, he had a remarkable international career resulting from the introduction of his Systema naturae, published in its first edition in 1735 in Amsterdam. Annotation enhances the value of documentary editions, which is in part why early publications without such notes frequently confused readers, especially those with limited background knowledge. In modem documentary editions annotations provide important historical references, which means that misidentifications, especially when copied repeatedly, can have lasting negative impact.
